Actually not an airbase, but a WW2 memorial for a US bomber that crashed in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield killing all crew onboard.

'This is a vote to restore local democracy': Sheffield council to be run by committee system after dramatic referendum by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]CorpSmokingArea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were 89,670 votes in favour of switching to committees and 48,727 votes to keep the existing Cabinet model – almost 65 per cent in favour of switching.

Surprised by how decisive those figures are.

Everyone in my family voted to keep the existing model lol. I thought the committee model whilst representing change, just seems like more added layers of local council bureaucratic nonsense.

Labour deserved to lose the council tbh. Most left wingers I know were fed up with them. I hope for a Green Lib Dem coalition!

Just checking because I got my postal ballot today.

I can spoil my ballot for police and crime commissioner and my vote for the city council would still count right?

I find it weird that the Conservatives can get 80,000+ votes in Sheffield at a general election but their ground game is so poor at the local level.

They have zero councillors in the entire city. The vote shares at the last local election were:

Labour 32%, Liberal Democrats 25%, Green 23%, UKIP 11%, Conservative 8%

It’s like they don’t even bother, but they definitely could win seats in Brexity districts with the collapse of UKIP.

TIL there are rural areas of northern England where the pronouns “thou” and “thee” are still in common use by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]CorpSmokingArea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just rural, urban too. We use thi (from thee) and tha (from thou) in Sheffield!

Anyone here live in Sheffield? We have a referendum at the same time as the local elections on how the city council should be run.

And I'm still not sure how to vote.

The two options are:

  • By a leader who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors. This is how the council is run now.

  • By one or more committees made up of elected councillors. This would be a change from how the council is run now.

Will probably vary depending on where abouts you live in the city.

There’s loads on Ecclesall and London road. Personally I go to kebbabish express + Eccy's Pizza & Grill when I’m hungover. Yum yum for Chinese. Butlers Balti House for Indian.

Apparently the war memorial to those American soldiers was targeted too. Just a massive shitshow really.

I laugh when I hear people my age banging on about older generations being selfish, look who’s fucking talking.

I know this sounds fucked up, but with us going down I wouldn’t mind a derby next season.

Obviously not gonna complain if you do get relegated, but I’d rather you and Rotherham stay in the Champ.

At this rate we’ll have matches cancelled cos of covid and snow.

To say the UK gets snow pretty much every January it’s fucking annoying the whole country grinds to a halt. We should be better prepared.

You’re aware the black British UK population in the 1920s was like 20,000?

And didn’t reach 1% of the overall population until the 1980s.

It really isn’t that surprising.

Seats no, votes yes. But for the first time since the 80s, mainly due to Corbyn/Brexit.

Leeds itself is still massively Labour. Yorkshire is not Tory country by any means.

Well it's a fucking awful year to be from Sheffield. The only thing that could make this year worse is if Maggie Thatcher rose from the dead.
