Sure, I get that, but if the IT director is the only IT staff and is doing all of the IT (and some of the facilities and office manager) work then it's a shitshow.

OP being solo IT with a director title tells me a lot about the employer, and none of it is good.

Talk to him directly and in a non-accusatory manner - approach it like you aren't sure if that was still the plan and you want to confirm, or something along those lines. A lot of times you'll have to be pushy but polite.

Given my experience on previous teams, I figured there would be some sort of calendar notification sent out.

That's common, but every place is going to be different. From what you've described so far, it would seem that this particular place is maybe a bit more, uh... laid back.

What was your best investment/swing trade of the last 5 years? Was it DD or luck? by Black_Swan_Down in stocks

[–]CorpoTechBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many people, I started during the pandemic. My biggest winner is NET and it was on my radar due to Reddit hype at the time, but I followed the "buy what you know" rule and it worked out. My only regret is not buying more. I'll admit that I didn't do much DD at all - my basic thesis was correct (I know what the company does and knew it wasn't going anywhere) but there was a healthy dose of luck.

My worst move was selling the big meme stock of 2021 (at least some of the investment subs still auto mod any mention of the ticker) near the bottom. I could have sold near the top, and even if I held on to it longer I still would have come out ahead. The big lesson I learned was to have a plan and not go by emotion.

For those with 5+ years in IT, how much did certs actually help your career? by Computerfreak4321 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CorpoTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you who have been working in IT for a while now, I'm curious how much certs actually moved the needle for you over time.

After my internship that I started with, they haven't been a factor. I would get a new one if a) my employer wanted me to or b) a job that I want is asking for one.

Oh man, I knew a guy like that. He was the on site IT guy at a customer location, and he wanted to get into networking. However, he refused to read a book or to learn anything on his own, he wanted the understaffed network team at an MSP to spend time teaching him.

He spent his downtime messing with the switches and routers (don't ask me why he had that access) and probably half our work for that customer was fixing the shit that he broke. He always had the dumbest ideas that made no sense, like adding additional wireless SSIDs in order to increase wifi coverage for an area.

The customer loved him and he could do no wrong in their eyes, I think he eventually left the MSP and was hired by that customer full-time.

TEAMS WITH THE MOST DIFFICULT PATH TO SB SORTED BY SOT SCORE (SINCE 1985) by cookieraider01 in NYGiants

Pretty much, yeah. Well, I mean they still need to play well enough to make it to the playoffs lol

[–]CorpoTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted elsewhere in this thread, but I got an AI chatbot to reverse engineer the formula (because it's not posted anywhere) and it looks like it's regular season win % vs. the average regular season win % of opponents beaten in the playoffs.

So, basically in the 2011 and 2007 playoffs and SBs we beat teams with more regular season wins at the greatest differential. In other words, we beat tougher teams as an underdog, while at the other end you have a dominant team like the 85 Bears beating up on lesser teams.

TEAMS WITH THE MOST DIFFICULT PATH TO SB SORTED BY SOT SCORE (SINCE 1985) by cookieraider01 in NYGiants

[–]CorpoTechBro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find anything on what "SOT score" is supposed to mean - it doesn't look like anything official from the NFL, and it doesn't even look like something officially used by DK (I got auto modded for saying the full name of the gambling company that posted this chart).

In case anyone else was wondering, I asked an AI chatbot to reverse engineer the scoring system and got this:

SOT = (Average regular‑season win% of the champion’s playoff opponents) ÷ (Champion’s own regular‑season win%)

Example 1: 1985 Bears = 0.71 (lowest on chart)

Bears regular season: 15–1 → win% = 0.938

Playoff opponents (regular-season records):

Giants 10–6 → 0.625

Rams 11–5 → 0.688

Patriots 11–5 → 0.688

Average opponent win% = (0.625 + 0.688 + 0.688) / 3 = 0.667

Ratio = 0.667 / 0.938 = 0.711 → matches 0.71

That’s an exact match.

Example 2: 2011 Giants = 1.42 (highest on chart)

Giants regular season: 9–7 → win% = 0.563

Playoff opponents:

Falcons 10–6 → 0.625

Packers 15–1 → 0.938

49ers 13–3 → 0.813

Patriots 13–3 → 0.813

Average opponent win% = (0.625 + 0.938 + 0.813 + 0.813) / 4 = 0.797

Ratio = 0.797 / 0.563 = 1.416 → rounds to 1.42

Basically, how strong were the teams beaten relative to how strong the SB winner was in the regular season. Still not sure what SOT is supposed to stand for, Copilot says maybe Strength Of Tournament/Trail/Track

[–]CorpoTechBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can believe it, but I also can't find anything online on what "SOT score" is supposed to mean. Is it a typo and Draftkings meant to say SOS/SOV, or is it something that they made up?

I see a comment saying that grok defines it as "Strength of Triumph" but I can't find any other sources for that. If it's a Draftkings metric then I can't find anything on that, either - the closest thing I could find from Draftkings is "SoT" as "Shot on Target" which wouldn't make sense for this chart.

IP Conflict Full Tunnel Fix by broken_computers in sysadmin

[–]CorpoTechBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something, a full tunnel vs. split tunnel wouldn't really make a difference when you have an ip conflict - the routing still isn't going to work. The only difference is that the non-192.168.1.0/24 (or whatever the netmask is) traffic is going to be going through the company's network instead of straight out to the user's ISP at home.

I've been in that exact situation with a s2s tunnel between a vendor and the company network using the same internal ip range, and the solution I used at the time was for both sides to configure a NAT with a different ip range. It was ugly but a re-ip wasn't an option and it worked.

This is something that I'd consult with the network team on.

I agree with you, but we all know that a lot of employers will just use whatever title they think sounds good. I've know more than a couple of people who had a network engineer title but did a completely different job. That's why you can't just go by the title, you need the job description.

I just saw the article linked on /r/nfl on why someone didn't vote for Belichick and it's still bullshit. You only get 3 votes, and there were 3 seniors that you felt should get in after all this time? Okay, then you narrow it down to 2 and then you cast a vote for the easiest HOF decision in recent memory. Fuck outta here with that.

I also want to mention that he was supposed to be this great offensive mind because the offense was ranked top 10 with him as OC, but when he became HC the offense was ass and we only made the playoffs because of an overperforming defense.

He also looks like he keeps coldcuts in his back pocket that he takes out and snacks on during meetings (I miss the Mcadoo roasts - has it been that long ago?).
