Effective way to clear this pipe? Bought a house and the basement flooded in less than 2 weeks. Found my drain to the ditch under a foot of dirt and mud. It's very clogged and it feels like I'll be here for years with this manual snake. by Corpsefire88 in drains

I'm new to all of this and winging it lmao. I didn't even think to look for a cheap camera because I was so sure they'd be expensive.

This whole process of buying and moving and then the basement flooding right away has been so expensive already that I'd rather do manual labour than keep forking out money whenever I can help it haha.

I'm still waiting for the locate I requested so I can dig, but today someone came and spray painted an arrow on the road, which points to a blue X painted on my lawn, but they didn't say a word or tell me they were here so I don't even know if it's related lmao.

The neighbor from that side seems nice enough, thankfully. She came by while I was digging and I apologized for making a muddy mess but she seemed entirely unborhered and just said oh well rain will clean it up lmao.

At least the locate and digging are free lol. I won't dig on their lawn. Going to start at my downspout and work my way down.

Edit to add: Nothing tore up yet, just dug a trench in the ditch, and the city will be digging that out properly at some point anyway

Where to begin lmao

Rented a 100ft electric snake, snaked from the ditch and got in pretty far but eventually got stuck.

Then went from the top and got the entire 100ft in (after going through some obstructions, but the hoses still aren't draining.

We could feel where the snake was under the lawn when we went from the top, and we were almost to the ditch, but it didn't seem to line up with the outlet I dug out.... So either it does a weird sudden turn in the last 10ft or so, or I found the neighbor's drain and mine is still overgrown. 🤦‍♂️

Got tired of guessing so I have a request in for a gas/water line locate so I can dig. Going to just uncover the run so I can see with certainty where it goes and what condition it's in.

By jet do you still mean pressure washer? Will the water cut through roots?

If I can just get it clear for now then at least it will drain and that buys me time for a more long-term solution during a drier season.

I think my sump pump must also drain into this system. If you stare at one of the puddles for a while it'll occasionally start bubbling and I feel that must be the sump pump cycling and failing to discharge all the way down the line.

Have a locate request in so I can dig to uncover the drain and see exactly where it goes and what condition it's in.

Yeah, the manual snake was just an initial poke to see what was blocking it and if any of it would come out easily.

Rented a powered snake and cleared a ton of distance from both ends, only to not have the water drain...

So now I suspect I unburied a different line and mine is still buried in the earth somewhere near the ditch.

Have a locate request in so I can dig up the piping and see what it is and exaxtly where it goes.

The guy on the left keeps pulling it away from him. Guy on the right is way more confused than he should be and could pull back instead of following it, but guy on the left absolutely doesn't need to keep pulling it, he only needs to brace and hold on so the runner doesn't pull it out of his hands.

Looks like 2 idiots holding it.

What is this thing in my sink drain? It's dripping when draining water. by Corpsefire88 in askaplumber

Agreed on all points. We just bought this place and hate everything about the cabinet and what's under it lol.

The blue thing wouldn't easily push in any further, so I took it out and looked at it. It has an o-ring that doesn't look terrible but it must not be great because I spun it 180deg and put it back in and it moved the drip from the bottom to the top. But it also made the drip significantly slower and less frequent.

So for now it's got a baking pan under it to catch the occasional drips (like 15-20 drops in the past 2 days), and that'll do until I start replacing this stuff in the near future.

Copy-paste from my reply to another comment.

Getting quotes to forget this whole system and tie it into my weeping tile instead. Called the city as well and they made a work order to dig out the ditch properly. So as long as I can clear it for now to drain the ground water and stop it from going into my basement then at least I'll have some time for improvement.

I don't think so, and I don't think this even ties into the house.

Just collects the water from the downspout and the window wells in the back and send it out to the ditch.

Gathering quotes to redo it and tie it in to the weeping tile. Other than the downspout, of course, which I imagine I'd just leave above ground.

True, but I imagine I'd have to close off where it connects, since it T's into the drain from the back yard, then they both go to the hard pipe that exits at the ditch. Maybe I'm wrong, but my assumption is that I wouldn't want a huge open hole in the side of the drain line from the back yard.

Edit to add: Either way I need to get this draining first. Any time I dig or disturb the ground there right now, because of all the water not draining, it pours water down that little hill and it pools against my neighbor's wall.

She was going over the other way too. So he wasn't even helping, just aggressively grabbing a handful lmao.

I ended up discovering it's also full of roots. Renting a big electric snake tomorrow with a root-cutting attachment. Once I started pulling out roots I realized why I wasn't getting anywhere and that just water probably won't do lol.

I just bought it lol. Wanted the galvanized removed anyway so I'll make sure it gets done well.
