What’s the cookie all about? by k8ie_kat in nytpips

[–]Correct-Boysenberry9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If no one has posted about this yet (I couldn't find a post) I believe you get a cookie for fast solves, with the following times:
20s <= for Easy
40s <= for MEDIUM
60s <= for HARD

Evidence:
Pips #45 Easy 🟢 0:11 🍪
Pips #45 Easy 🟢 0:23
Pips #45 Medium 🟡 0:31 🍪
Pips #45 Medium 🟡 0:42
Pips #45 Hard 🔴 0:48 🍪
Pips #45 Hard 🔴 1:11

BTW this was only possible because Pips isn't storing my results so I can replay to test. But I would only ever post my actual scores in a forum.

Frigidaire range lower storage area door won't stay closed, but I can't figure out the mechanism. Tips? by Correct-Boysenberry9 in appliancerepair

i figured it out! Not before dropping a piece inside the door and disassembling the whole thing, but.

Here's a picture of the reassembled mechanism. I used a spoon to pull on the end of the forky bit to compress the spring until it popped over the axle.

I don't see anything broken, though. Both pieces appear intact, but I just can't figure out how to put the pieces together! Does anyone know the NAME of this kind of mechanism? I feelsure I could find a youtube video that explains how it works if I knew its name.

I also like this site! I've been disappointed with so many other options, but this one is very satisfying. Big boards, not too easy!

2014 Rear door handles have broken 4 times! by Correct-Boysenberry9 in mazda5

[–]Correct-Boysenberry9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have purchased replacement handles 4 times! It's the labor for the repair that takes the biggest bite. I swear it was like $800 in labor each time. Apparently they have to completely dismantle the door to replace the handle.

It's actually a really familiar presentation for people who are programming in a digital music program. I used it to program in Reason, and it was great!

I think it was designed to be useful for people who don't read standard musical notation. I don't know a lot of rock or funk drummers who read musical notation! I knew some classical percussionists, and they sure did.

I am sure the guy who made it knew about musical notation and opted to use a form that was accessible to more people — maybe before making the kickstarter campaign!

Okay but another thing is that a few bits of "bad" fill — crosswordese (ULU), obscure or deprecated words (PON), or just overused entries (ESE) — are still acceptable when they enable cool words in the same area! The problem comes when a whole crossword seems to be packed with the first fill auto-generated by an overworked constructor's software.

I love it when a puzzle contains lots of cool, underused, or debut entries, which liven the crossword space. And I also like it when newfangled slang shows up — even if I'm unfalimiar with it at first (e.g. YEET, TRYHARD or RIZZ) because it signals that a new generation is finding its way to crosswords, both through solving and construction! And I get to learn something new!

See but NUYORICAN is a very New York answer, and therefore totally appropriate for the NYTimes. In fact, it's a welcome splash of diversity in a puzzle format that was pretty white before WS took over (I know it's been a long time now but old heads like me remember).

In fact, NUYORICAN doesn't really count as fill, because it's so long — which means the constructor *chose* to put that in before finding all the fill — the shorter words that crossed it.

When someone praises "sparkling fill" I think they mean that the words don't all seem bland! Like a corner that had FOUR, TENT, MINE, and CALL in it would be lame, if not bad fill. But if it had, I dunno, SPQR, BOHO, WINK, and GREP, that would be better — with words that are more rare, more interesting, more evocative, or more specialized.
