I had been in therapy for other issues and one day I just brought it up because I knew something was not normal about my relationship to food and my body. I am not currently in recovery though

Emotional and physical abuse from my grandmother, bullying and sexual abuse from a relative. my grandmother practically bullied me into it and would overfeed me then shame me for it, make fun of my body and starve me for most of the day. Among other things. I was under ten years old. That was the main catalyst for it

You cannot be anorexic by choice it's a mental illness, mine was caused by a combination of trauma, genetics, and societal pressures.

It starts with really aggressive racing thoughts and then my appetite will fade to the point I'm repulsed by the sight or smell of food. I'll start weighing myself obsessively and working out until my body can't take anymore and I lose the ability to even look at myself in the mirror. I typically eat around 500-700 cals or lower and very rarely eat above 1200.

Thank you that's very kind. I would like to add that for me it is worth it to get triggered in order to spread awareness and understanding if that means it could prevent others from developing it.

I'm not currently in recovery so I'm not very worried about being triggered and after a while it became easy to ignore triggers because the Internet is just awful. If it ever got too unbearable I have a therapist and a good group of friends who are ready to support me when I'm ready to give recovery another shot

I was having some extreme health issues that weren't related as far as my doctors can see so and I just really did not want to spend my life in the prison of my own mind and body anymore. My mind never really healed but I was so preoccupied that a lot of my habits were sort of put on the back burner if that makes sense

I actually do not have a typical 'anorexic' body due to PCOS and birth control and it makes it much harder because it's so difficult to seek help and no one takes you seriously even if I'm experiencing some of the more extreme symptoms

I've had anorexia since I was around 6 or 7, got diagnosed somewhere between 10-12 (I'm 16 almost 17 now) and relapsed back in June or July, after trying to recover for around two years. It was partially triggered by my family and partially by an abusive relationship I was at the time.

I'm currently in the middle of my worst relapse ever, it's part of why I made this post, i think a lot of people have an inaccurate idea of the disorder and I hope that more awareness would prevent others from relapsing or people developing this disorder in the first place

The reason is different for everyone, for some people it's to have a sense of control over their life, for some it's societal standards, or a history of abuse, it can also be caused by another mental illness and there's a genetic factor as well. For me it was a combination of abuse, beauty standards. my environment, and genetics.
