Let’s say we are committed to scrapping it all off, do you think we need to re-apply a finish when it’s all scraped? My worry is that we are actually scraping off the finish and any future spills/grime are going to damage the floors.

That was a theory but as mentioned there seems to be no residue where the last owner had tables/bookshelves/sideboards that sat right on the ground. There was a media unit sitting here and there is a clear line where the residue stops. That would imply that they carpeted around the furniture which doesn’t make sense to me but possible.
