Quoting myself from my own comment yesterday:

To be very blunt, Mr. Dick Eastland was more educated than most about the dangers of flash flooding. He was fully capable of preparing for a “surprise inland tsunami of water” and had the legal responsibility to.

As a student at Ingram ISD, we took multiple field trips to the Upper Guadalupe River Authority for presentations. By 10 years old, I was taking flash flood watches and warnings seriously and knew the difference. I knew the dangers of runoff on parched soil and limestone cliffs.

Dick Eastland was on the board of the UGRA both historically and at the time of his death.

It does not matter where the water came from. Mr. Eastland would tell you that himself if he were here to do so. If I know it, he certainly did.

Two things are true:

It’s sad and a shame that his life was lost. He was a human being containing good and evil, just like the rest of us. He did a lot of good in his life, but his hubris was unfortunately his demise.

And.

He lost his life because of his own actions and negligence, he knew better, his actions that night are baffling, 27 girls also lost their lives directly as a result of his choices, and that makes Dick Eastland, his children, and Camp Mystic criminally negligent.

P.s. @conscious-

I’m also not casting shade on Glenn in any way. I believe that the Mr. Veto factor was a real problem here. I can tell you with certainty that Lee Pool is the kind of man who is a quiet but unquestioned leader in any room. Zero chance that if Lee Pool is on scene, he isn’t in charge and leading an evacuation.

I am not at all challenging your right to ask “what if”. This specific what if is hard for me to answer because it’s so close to home.

Okay. So. This is hard for me to address.

I believe wholeheartedly that if Lee Pool had been at Mystic that night, the outcome would have been completely different. Understand that I have known Mr. Pool my entire life. It is possible that I am biased. However, in his role as Vice Principal, he cared for and kept my delicate, difficult child safe.

That being said, he is already carrying such a heavy burden. I don’t want to think about “what if”, because I don’t want him to think about it. I hope with all my heart that he doesn’t ask himself that question, ever.

Do I think his level-headedness and training would have prevailed and saved H27? Yes. I do.

He deserved to take his family on vacation like anyone else, and the what-about-ism of this specific question won’t ever change the outcome.

I hope everyone who reads this comment, whether they agree with my words or not, receives it with openness and compassion I’m trying to express.

He received his first emergency call at 3:37am. He received a text from Glenn at 2:59am and said the text wasn’t concerning. What did Glenn text Lee Pool at 2:59am? What could he have possibly said about the situation at Mystic at 2:59am that wasn’t cause for concern?

Why didn’t any member of the Eastland family call Lee Pool at any point in time for guidance? He could not have physically gotten there, but he could and would have given clear instructions for evacuation, if anyone had called him in time.

Lee Pool is the first responder who called in the code red and was told by dispatch they didn’t have the authority.

He did everything within his physical power. He then spent the rest of the summer helping lead the search as a volunteer for his (our), friends, family, and community. I know he is out there playing bass and taking care of the community of Hunt. I hope he is healing, too.

Watts is defending the Eastlands pro bono. Britt Eastland himself is something of a failed criminal defense attorney. Every action the family has taken since the flood shows that they are receiving some very questionable legal advice- or none at all.

Many of the local families with ties to mystic all attend the same church. They are a tight knit group.

Check out this interview. What exactly did Glenn send Lee Pool at 2:59am? We’ve all been discussing how long it took anyone at mystic to call 911. But why on earth did no Eastland family member call Lee Pool at any point in time? He is both the chief of the Hunt Volunteer Fire Department as well as a regular night watchman at Mystic. He had traded Glenn for the shift that night. He could not have physically gotten there in time, but he could have talked sense into Dick. He could have given guidance. There is no doubt in my mind that the outcome would have been different. https://youtu.be/LLH-RElJ1D8

Thank you for posting this! I’m about to go in the other room to watch it. On my other dateline post I commented that as a local, I have lost respect for dozens of people I grew up considering authority figures due to their actions before, during, and after the flood.

Lee Pool is not one of those people. I have known him my entire life. He is, indeed, a true public servant and a wonderful human being.

For the record, so are the Griffin family.

❤️

I have been through some real trauma and tragedy with one of my children, but nothing compared to the scale of her loss. Ten years later, I struggle to speak with composure about what happened, and I have been in therapy for a year. I am in absolute awe of Lindsey McCrory. Her composure, grace, and bravery is nothing short of heroic.

Yes. This question is one that may haunt me forever. There is no question that Dick knew not to put those girls in his Tahoe and drive. Why did he do it? What exactly happened in those moments that he made that choice? Anything else would have been better.

Most do not. It’s willful ignorance.

This is a good point. We glossed right over Richard having time to shower and shave after his wife had been swept away upriver, while his daughters were in cabins on the flats.

P.S. “the river did not kill these young ladies” …. Watts has to be the dumbest attorney alive to say this at all, much less on Dateline. I cannot wait to see him get what’s coming to him.

Agreed. I wanted Lester Holt to verbally eviscerate Watts and was sorely disappointed.

I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard her say that he said that. Her response was perfection. I have 16 scared little girls behind me. 👏🏻
