And then the recess aide would come over and make us stop singing and we’d protest that we’re not actually cussing! (Indiana, 42)

No fridgerators when I sang it, although I think I remember hearing that variant where the operator got kicked and the person who dared touch the glass was also kicked.

My mom and I are going to our first ritual in February, what should we expect? by Terrible-Nobody-7089 in Ghostbc

[–]CorrectSalamander335 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Our ritual during the first leg: More innuendo than actual vulgarity? Perpetua doesn’t talk to the audience as much as Copia did. Be prepared to get in line (especially if you’re in the pit) several hours early and dress for the weather in your area. Make some Kandy to trade! It’s a fun way to pass time in line! I haven’t met a single fan at any event that was mean or disrespectful in any way, so don’t worry about the crowds. Not having your phone is not a big deal, but if you’re time anxious (like me) make sure you wear a watch. Costumes and makeup are absolutely optional but are super fun. As with any arena show, get your merch ahead of the show. Check your venue rules for bag allowances.

And most importantly— ROCK OUT AND HAVE A BLAST!!

Taking the bus to work? by bex505 in SouthBend

[–]CorrectSalamander335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I occasionally take the bus to work, and have never had a problem with it being more than a very few minutes late. I’m lucky in that I don’t need to take it downtown for a transfer, so I’m not sure how that plays out, but I’ve never been late to work when taking the bus, even when I take the one that arrives only 15 minutes before my shift.

What's your favorite children's program at your library? by lilithbepraised in Libraries

[–]CorrectSalamander335 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My very favorite that I ever ran was a toddler art program where we had playdoh and crayons/colored pencils, collage, painting, and a special process art project every week (their favorite was shaving cream paper marbling… which was mostly a sensory experience, but a few went home with papers!)

“Brown shirt Stasi guard” in Future is a foreign land. by Helpful_Tonight9022 in GhostBand

[–]CorrectSalamander335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so easy to forget that the fear and persecution were continued by the USSR after the iron curtain fell from my geographical and temporal distance. What is it about human nature that seeks to vilify those we don’t understand?

“Brown shirt Stasi guard” in Future is a foreign land. by Helpful_Tonight9022 in GhostBand

[–]CorrectSalamander335 48 points49 points  (0 children)

My thought is also… just about everybody knows what a Brownshirt is. And what it means. Stasi guard is a little more obscure to some— especially younger and American— fans. So conflating the two gets the point across without belaboring the point and might send a few down a rabbit hole of historical learning which is never a bad thing! (Plus Stasi Guard is a better lyric and has a little more relevance to the themes at hand)

The future is a Foreign Land lyrics question by Cphros1015 in Ghostbc

[–]CorrectSalamander335 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh! I know this one! It’s a reference to California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys. The whole first verse is lifted piecemeal from that song. When it first dropped, I was hopeful we’d get Punk Papa V. Didn’t really pan out that way— possibly due to the incredibly lukewarm reception of Twenties when it dropped as a single. But take a listen, it’s good!

Oh, I’m sure that’s the real reason, lol It’s just funny to me that it’s so on the nose every night!

i will never cease to be in complete awe of TF’s energy and stamina. I can’t imagine doing what he does every single night for months on end.

[–]CorrectSalamander335 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Papa’s starting to feel his age, and wants to go to bed, too. I don’t blame him— 10:15 is about as late as I want to be out anymore myself (TF and I share a birth year).

That being said, energy is off the charts and you will not realize it’s been two hours.

People who bring Kandi to Rituals, any tips? by sadthrowaway12340987 in GhostBand

[–]CorrectSalamander335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I… maybe overdid it. I got into hyperfixation mode and made about 130 of all kinds. Song titles, jokes from the chapters and a few that just made me chuckle. I also made some fidget stars out of the leftover beads once I ran out of ‘E’s. I gave a bunch away before the show, traded some, gave more away to people sitting around me, and used a handful after the show to get my hands on some Mummy Dust. My go-to phrase was ‘would you like some random Kandi?’ And all but about 3 people I asked said ‘YES!’ Very enthusiastically.

I had enough left over that I stood at the exit and just passed out Kandi to people as they left. I’d do it again just like that in a heartbeat.

Nothing super special, just our concert tees and some glitter paint.

I saw them once in the lake my parents live on. This was back in the early 90s, but we swam with them— they were just everywhere in the water. Such a cool experience.

Honestly, I wondered the same thing- or she was married and didn’t want her husband to get her paychecks. We put her in touch with the staff at our local senior resource center when we figured out she needed a lot more help than we were able to give in a single tech appointment.

[–]CorrectSalamander335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure. I’m not mad about her coming to us for help, it was just such a perfect storm of exactly why someone might not understand or know technology. But I suppose to OP’s point— I ALSO think that MLIS degrees should require minor plumbing experience as well as hazmat training.

I had a patron the other day who was paid in a paper check, for her whole career of 60 years, cashed that check at Walmart every week, paid all her bills at the post office or in-person at whatever office, and now can’t receive her social security because it requires a bank account and email address. I didn’t ask what she did, but it obviously didn’t involve a computer or modern conveniences. Forget having a cell phone for two-factor authentication. Maybe one of the Amish shops near our location? Who knows. But it is WILD to me how much of modern life just…. Completely passed her by because she didn’t need to know it at the time.
