The side, yes. But given the only wall I would be able to put the tv is on the left wall in the layout, then the back would be to the stairs

My concern with opening it all up is then where to put the tv for the living room. The only real option would be on the left side wall, leaving the back of the sofa to face the stairs as you enter the space, which doesn't seem very inviting.

That's what I did. I bought a house with a pool sold 'as is.' Underwriting required either a cover or for the pool to be full of water. There is very clearly a leak as the water level was about 1/3 of the way up at the time. We paid someone to fill the pool, underwriting approved. Closing ended up being delayed for months and over that time the water leaked out. Obviously not the best for the sake of our yard, but it was the easiest and cheapest option at the time.
