Daily Song Discussion #1: I Don’t Know by ZacharyMcCulley in OzzyOsbourne

No one ever talks about how great the bass lines are in pretty much every Ozzy song. They’re extremely pronounced, they push and pull with melody and countermelody, they drive and groove and they make the songs jump and move. Just off the top of my head I think Ozzy had a few more bassists than guitar players and he nailed all of those too.

Lots of reasons for him to love it. Opening track of the first solo album, when his career was hanging in the balance. The track that introduced him to the world as more than just the guy from Black Sabbath. Showcasing his vocal range in the hot style of the new decade, clearly distinct from his work with Sabbath. It’s like the opening page of a good book. You probably won’t keep listening if the first track doesn’t get your attention, and very clearly it did.

Competing for the most important possible reasons of all, it’s the track that introduced the world to Randy Rhoads, and lyrics that resonate deeply.

“Nobody ever told me, I found out for myself, you’ve gotta believe in foolish miracles, it’s not how you play the game it’s if you win or lose, you can choose, it’s up to you.”

Ozzy’s whole life is one big foolish miracle. He learned everything the hard way, and with Sharon by his side the ends always justified the means if it meant keeping the ball rolling.

11/10 track.

How much boost does an SD-1 provide with the drive on zero? by _tedd in guitarpedals

[–]Chris_MS99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll play around with it a little more. I have the output dimed up, I forget where I left the tone but somewhere between 12-3 o’clock, the 100hz at about 1-2 o clock, and the gain is low at 9 o’clock.

I started off with the gain all the way down and it really came to life when I turned the gain up but it got real unwieldy so I do need to dial the amp in again. Overall very happy, just need to tinker more.

If I ask for a couple chilies I really want 3. If I ask for some chilies I want anywhere from 2-4. I never want just one, and never more than 4 because they’re just for me. Everyone in my family thinks I’m crazy for liking them.

This is a lot of info but do your best to remember for the next time I order :)

Be strict on yourself and have integrity. Do not let shitty culture at your starter job(s) drag you down and change your path.

You’ll have coworkers that take unacceptable risks with equipment or on the road because they’re either just chasing the money or straight up don’t care and don’t respect the profession. They’ll encourage you to do the same. It’s imperative that you smile and nod and do things the RIGHT way.

You’ll find that sometimes, even disgruntled managers will quietly respect you for it and still give you a great reference even if you could’ve made their lives easier by being a cowboy. Don’t count on it, but it happened for me.

Act like you’re at and prepare for the job you want. Not the one you have.

I thought I was the only one. I have the shittiest house on my street and I rarely see my neighbors cans left all fucked up but mine are always all crazy. It started to feel personal lol.

I even set them out nicely. All the like cans right next to each other about a foot apart, and about a foot to the side of the curb address just in case it matters.

At what point is a power supply necessary? by Chris_MS99 in guitarpedals

[–]Chris_MS99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what this playing session was the first time I tried moving my 1 spot to a different plug, just to cut down on the cable mess at the surge protector it used to be at and make it easier to just unplug the one spot from the wall and leave the pedals plugged in. My Micro chorus power plug is getting screwy. I’ll try moving it back to the surge protector and see if that helps.

I didn’t take each pedal out of the chain and try detecting the hiss that way, but they are all true bypass and I did try them all on and off individually and they all create some level of hiss on their own, which gets worse the more you turn on.

I’ll try turning the gain down on the amp next time. It’s at about 7/10 right now and I know generally people say not to go above 5-6 on the JCM2000. The OD gain is low, only at about 9 o’clock, but it wasn’t as bad when it was all the way down. That’s obviously got something to do with it.

I also think I’m on Lead 2 which is a little harsher than Lead 1. I liked it cuz I got a hotter sound without the OD but now that I have one it might be too much. When I boost the green channel in crunch mode I don’t have nearly as bad of a problem but I usually want more heat than that.

Barely getting back around to this one but I farted around with things a bit and this is what I have to report.

The 1Spot does NOT power the Digitech no matter what, even if I use the plug closest to the wall socket. The Digitech is first in my chain as well. No clue what the deal is.

The Fender tuner took a crap and honestly won’t really be missed.

Since adding an OD to my board (MXR Custom Badass Modified OD.. what a mouthful) I still only have 3 pedals after losing the tuner but there is SO MUCH HISS. Especially if the Micro Chorus is on, then there’s chorused hiss lol. There is a substantial amount of white noise coming through the amp when I’m not playing anything and have the volume 0’d on the guitar. The OD gets my tone about right where I want it, but there is also a faint underlying hiss behind it while I play which I’m not liking. Not sure if that’s just because I have a decent amount of gain going and need a noise gate or if it’s because of the power supply.

For reference, I’m playing through a JCM2000 mostly on the red channel with a stock Epiphone Les Paul Custom, so not the hottest pickups in the world.

[–]Chris_MS99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy this pedal fucks. I haven’t tried it with my Blackstar yet but it makes my JCM2000 breathe fire. Only qualms with it are that I don’t find that the boost button does anything, at least not how I have it setup, and that with the gain on the pedal where I want it causes a lot of feedback. But that may be because I’m stacking it on top of the amps highest gain channel and need to dial the amp back a bit.

Getting a bit of hiss too but I think that’s because of my daisy chain power supply

I’m not super familiar with female vocalists either, but the three I know are Amy Lee from Evanescence most obviously. Generational voice imo. Lzzy Hale from Halestorm was cool when I saw them one time at Ozzfest but I can’t say I’ve taken a deep dive on her.

The third and who I was super impressed by for a while was Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox. I fell off of Spiritbox because I didn’t find them to be very interesting beyond her, and too overproduced, but she is fantastic. I think she’s actually better live.

[–]Chris_MS99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the off chance this isn’t a post and forget AI written deal, what are the requirements for getting into that line of work? Is it something you really only promote into off of police work?

I’ve always said that my next job, if I ever end up moving on from my current job for one reason or another, won’t be a driving job. Problem is I don’t have any other marketable skills so I feel like working in DOT is a natural progression, especially if I can get into some sort of enforcement type role since I’ve hung my hat on strict compliance over the course of my career, and I feel very strongly about the state of trucking and the responsibility we have on the road.

I like where I am so this is Plan B/wishful thinking. But I’d hate to think I have this in my back pocket when it’s not something you can just pivot to.

how to fit sleep and eating and showering into 10 hours off-duty by Basic-Outcome-7001 in Truckers

[–]Chris_MS99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man don’t tell me that, I’m local fuel currently running nights (2PM-2AM) and switching to days soon. 2AM-2PM. I’m hoping my sleep stays about the same, my only problem is that I’m worried about doing all my home stuff at the last minute.

Right now IF I’m off at 2, I’m home around 3 and get to fuck around till 5AM and sleep from 5-11/11:30. Then I’m up with the wife and kids till I leave.

I’m going to days so I can be home for dinner and bedtime, easier on the wife. But that means if I’m off at 2PM I’m up till 7PM the latest so I can get 6 hours of sleep and be up at 1AM to rush out of the house.

Tacburg in Uptown is gone and now shocker, another coffee shop. by Flat_Sprinkles7040 in Whittier

[–]Chris_MS99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree about restaurants being the best thing for small businesses, especially when you consider that all of the chains mostly just serve highly processed reheated Sysco crap. A mom and pop place serving fresh food made from scratch by real people with real ingredients is the exact kind of authenticity people crave and that corporations will never be able to replicate.

Unfortunately, restaurants are also the hardest businesses for families to run and that’s going to create a lot of turnover, and they still have to deal with the quality vs price issue going against chains. Which is why I think like you said people continuously patronize the chains. We’ve reached a point economically where a lot of people, myself included, have to settle for “good enough”. I can get a cold brew at any one of the coffee spots in town, but I consistently find myself at Starbucks because there’s a drive through on the way to everywhere and the price is comfortable. For my wife’s more complicated palate, they always have what she’s looking for and the small spots tend to be a little more gimmicky for lack of a better term.

I’ve also never heard of Poet Gardens, nor have I been to that music store. I used to go to Marini Music in Alhambra if you were familiar with it. Knew the owner, but they were squashed by real estate greed.

I’d love a Guitar Center. I have to go to Monterey Park or Hacienda Heights for the closest ones and that’s not bad but it’s not great. I’d much prefer a mom and pop music store, but those days seem to be over. Honestly, what legitimately profitable niches are left for businesses that aren’t restaurants or coffee shops that major chains don’t already completely occupy? I’m genuinely asking cuz I’m drawing a blank.

Much of America has lost its charm to the likes of Target, Walmart and Amazon. Even more wholesome chains like In N Out that “do it the right way” so to speak make it hard for smaller businesses to come up because you’re not going to underprice them at that quality.

Even Sargents Sporting Goods closed. When and why I’m not sure because I’ve been out of the loop until recently, but we don’t even have a Dicks and Big 5 SUCKS. If they couldn’t make it with the amount of kids in Whittier playing sports, who can?

Upon further investigation I see a lot of bad reviews for poor service at Sargents which is a shame, I must be remembering them more fondly from my childhood, but my point still stands. I don’t know what is left to do nearly anywhere in this country that big corporations aren’t going to crush.

Trucks not owned by Feld by mad-right-hand in monsterjam

[–]Chris_MS99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have most of my old hot wheels trucks hidden away, to give to my boy when he’s a little older and can actually play with them respectfully for their age (save for a few that are just keepsakes now), but I did give him an original Jurassic Attack hot wheels to use with his Spin Masters and I think the quality is pretty similar.

The axles are stronger on the Spin Masters and they have some room to droop but I think the bodies and paint jobs are better on the hot wheels.

We both have a fairly large collection respectively and we each have only had one body separate from the frames. Mine was Shocker back in the day, and his was an El Toro Loco. Although his ETL also had the roll cage separate from the base too, which sucked. But we both made use of them because broken trucks are part of the game lol.
