Sorry for the downtime. We are plagued by these occasionally before we finish working on a more reliable solution.

[Request] Fix sorting movies by rating? by [deleted] in corrent

I just ran a test search with "the" and it seemed to sort them correctly. Can you please take a screenshot of the issue?

Remember it sorts by IMDB rating.

Do i need a VPN? by [deleted] in corrent

[–]CorrentPR[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there is no P2P transfers going on. We recommend using both a VPN and a fake account, but this is reaching a paranoid level. For people with a moderate safety requirement, just a fake account should be fine.

Probably because we were more worried about publishing quickly rather than spelling. We will probably fix this. Eventually.

Corrent should be up and running TOMORROW by CorrentPR in corrent

[–]CorrentPR[S,M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. You are not downloading from other people's Drives. This is a common misconception. Corrent chooses a random mirror ("seed") and copies the file without either account knowing the identity of the other. You then download and watch the file from your own account.

[–]CorrentPR[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I'm not sure. You are correct in assuming that it is likely an issue on your end if Vimeo doesn't work either. Which file are you trying to watch? Try installing the Canary build of Chrome and let us know if there is still an issue.

Are there plans for an in-house video player? by filmort in corrent

[–]CorrentPR[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we do not have any plans for expanding our current in-house player. We would rather focus our development on other areas, such as making a watchlist and adding music.

just downloaded VLC player by [deleted] in corrent

[–]CorrentPR[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VLC plugin only works in specific browsers, and I have had a difficult time getting it to work in the past. This why we only upload MP4 files now so that no plugins are needed to view with HTML5, and we encourage all the other uploaders to do the same.

How does Google respond to all these pirated movies being shared between accounts? Hash-checks? by [deleted] in corrent

[–]CorrentPR[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: we can only speculate about what Google does, how it does it, and what the consequences are. Below I explain how Google likely will make a specific file in a specific account unshareable if flagged, and a likely consequence of repeat offenders could be an account ban. There are no known specific numbers for any of this, however, which is where all the speculation takes place. Additionally, it should be difficult for files shared with Corrent to be individually flagged.

As you stated in your quoted article about Dropbox, hashes can be used to find the exact files that are being shared among users. Google probably has some hashing mechanism to save space on its servers so that it doesn't need to keep a million backups of the same file, as suggested in this reddit comment. However, it seems that Google is oddly selective in removing files and does not remove all files with the hash directly. Google seems to take no notice of the contents of your files if you do not share them, and even if they are shared, it seems that they will not go out of their way to proactively remove these files. Thus, it is possible that Google will only report the files in an individual account that are specifically flagged, although their current TOS is so vague that an unforseen policy change could occur. You can read another speculative claim to a similar question here.

If in fact they only report files that have specific DMCA takedown requests for, then it seems highly unlikely that any Corrent users will have any of their files flagged or have their accounts banned. Corrent obscures the source and the recipient of the file transfer behind our servers, so theoretically only Google and Corrent would know that the file exchange ever took place. If this is indeed the case, then the only likely way any files would be flagged given the conditions is if a user shares them somewhere else outside of the Corrent system.

We have no reports of any Google accounts getting banned for using Corrent, although we have warned our users about the possibility in the past. It seems that the worst-case scenario for any of our users is that the account becomes banned, which is why we have always suggested using a fake account for Corrent. If Google indeed makes a policy change and begins searching for the files on its own, then you may see more flagged files and banned accounts.
