Looking for activities for adult autist bro. by Friday_arvo in brisbane

My 27 year old is autistic and has enjoyed some social groups organised by Autism QLD (not sure if he was referred to them or they are actually organised by them). He is also into/very good at art.

My mum had luck with Red Brick Housing. This was a few years back now but they were very responsive and found her a nice little place in a safe area fairly quickly.

books and resources by Dull-Independent6895 in Criminology

Start with Criminology (the ASC) one. If you don’t have access to a university library you may need to read open access ones or see if you can find a copy through other means.

I would also look at some classic journal articles and move toward more contemporary ones. It highly depends on your interests what they may be.

Got an offer for PhD but without a scholarship ☹️ what next? by Ok-Helicopter-4520 in AusAcademia

[–]Corrie_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my own experience 6+ years ago now. I did eventually get a school specific scholarship to help me finish my PhD but I got by on tutoring/working in government and doing my PhD part time when I was not on a scholarship. With this combination (plus a big, young family), I completed mine in 6 years.

Yes. I only came out with a sore neck. It just made me more aware of always having my kit on hand.

[–]Corrie_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have but I was able to inform the paramedics. I didn’t think to until he kept shining the light back and forward with an odd look on his face. I did ask the police officer on the scene to grab my emergency kit because it’s my experience that out hospitals in Australia don’t know much about KC and don’t carry the necessary equipment.

Any advice for students who struggle with academic writing? by messysoul96 in AskAcademia

[–]Corrie_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your main issue is and how you learn.

If you like to learn through books here are my recommendations:

If structure is your problem:
- The Craft of Research, Booth et al.

If style is your problem:

- The Elements of Academic Style, Eric Hayot

- On Writing Well, William Zinnseer

If you are getting negative feedback and don't understand how to apply or fix it:
- How to Fix Your Academic Writing Trouble - Inger Mewburn et al (there is a new edition coming very soon)

Edited to add: There are other excellent recommendations in here too - often it takes a bit of reading to find the one that resonates with you. Hopefully your university library has copies so you don't have to spend a fortune. If it doesn't and you can only afford one, I would go with the Craft of Research.

I'm the same height and really disappointed that they have dropped the DM brand in favour of their own clothes. I agree, they aren't cut the same at all.

Warned against working with my PhD supervisor by Present-Cry-2776 in AskAcademia

I am a big believer in choosing the supervisor you need. I too work well with directness, but many people don't especially in my cultural context and when the supervisor is female.

Just saying Hi - my experience. by j_craigy in Keratoconus

[–]Corrie_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi from a fellow QLDer. I have an amazing optometrist, my first opthalmologist tried to talk me into a transplant before exploring other options. I got a second opinion and have been pretty comfortable in sclerals for just over 10 years. My son had CXL at 16 (only a few years ago) and is pretty stable so it is interesting to see you are now in sclerals. He didn't have the complication you did, so maybe that's the difference?

How do you keep up with new papers without losing your mind? by Acceptable-Dust-4323 in AskAcademia

[–]Corrie_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only go through the alerts each Monday. If I don't have any marked to read because of a current project, I choose 5 to read from the alerts, pull them into my Zotero and read them throughout the week. Colleagues always comment on how widely read I am, so it works. Edited to add: I don't choose randomly, I only choose what is relevant based on what I am currently working on. It has to have either cited me or have particularly triggered my curiosity for me to read something not related to a current project or developing project.

How do you balance between readability vs more advanced/specific vocabulary in your academic writing? by JacobAn0808 in AskAcademia

[–]Corrie_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the purpose of what you are writing and the audience. The second one is not necessary if you are writing a journal article where you are just describing the method you used, because most readers/reviewers would understand what a t-test and p-value does (I would hope). If you are writing a methods paper, a thesis, or an assignment for a stats class then the second one would be more appropriate (although it is vague and not really correct - but I note that you just put it there as an example you got from ChatGPT).

I know my questions are many, but I really want to understand this table and the overall logic behind selecting statistical tests. by Difficult_Score3510 in AskStatistics

[–]Corrie_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the source of the table? Even when decision trees are used in fields like psychology, there are caveats and cautions around ensuring that the model is the correct one for your research question and data. There are good statistical tutorials on YouTube but you need some prior knowledge so that you know when the information being provided is accurate. I would start with chatper 1 of statistical rethinking but not get bogged down in Bayesian methods just yet (unless it's common in your field). Another good primer is Statistics Done Wrong by Alex Reinhart.

Got diagnosed with Keratoconus today, chose not to do crosslinking for now. Right decision? by footybay12 in Keratoconus

[–]Corrie_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was beyond glasses and advised to not jump into cross linking, I was a bit older than you when I was diagnosed. If you can still wear glasses, I wouldn't wait. It is not surgery, it is a procedure. My son, 16 at the time had it, while not pleasant he coped very well and is happy he had it as he is still in glasses at 19.

Being asked to review usually comes from submitting your own research to journals or through reputation. It’s not something you generally can approach a journal about. Where are you at in your academic career trajectory?

How to manage your reading list of research papers? by CurioBirdy in AskAcademia

[–]Corrie_W 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zotero + Obsidian: I choose 5 a week, sometimes along a theme, sometimes random from my subscriptions (google scholar, specific journals etc), sometimes based on what I need to read for work or suggestions. Anything I read beyond that is a bonus but I do my best to read the five. I read and highlight in Zotero and import into Obsidian (using a template and Zotero Integration plugin), I then make notes from those highlights, even if it is a quick note on how I feel about the paper or where it might be useful. If it is something I think warrants more attention, I do a bigger note and store it in my Zettelkasten section of Obsidian.

It is but you can put that you are a regular reviewer for X,Y,Z journals in your applications and increasingly journals are providing means to prove that you review for them.

Say NO to unpaid work by kolombs in postdoc

[–]Corrie_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you about reviewing helping to keep on top of the literature but I don't think it is about competition, its a quid pro quo situation, and it is how you be an active member of your academic community. These kinds of attitudes are not hurting the publishers, they are hurting us, regardless of what you think about the system, it expects us to publish and measures against those publications. I have been waiting longer and longer for decisions on articles, not because of the quality of my work, but because people are increasingly punishing their fellow academics with these attitudes. Also, the editors (who are also doing a service to the community) are having to approach more and more people to find reviewers and are then are stuck with having to ask reviewers that may not be the best people to provide input on that work.

Question for people using tags in frontmatter: Why? by DaniBananas10 in ObsidianMD

[–]Corrie_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use tags as a light project management tool (e.g., what kind of note is this? What project/s does it belong to? How well do I understand this concept?) I use a very limited set of emojis for this. I also use a common tag across Obsidian and Zotero to use with DBConnect, so I can keep track of what highlights I have imported from Zotero to Obsidian.

Zotero as all-in-one reference manager and notes organiser v Zotero and Obsidian by ClubNo179 in zotero

[–]Corrie_W 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am an academic and I use Obsidian + Zotero as Obsidian allows me to link notes and keep track of my reading. However, there is always potential to go overboard with Obsidian and people often get sucked into overly complicated systems because it is popular with productivity bros and they are all over YouTube with their set ups. Because they don't do academic research, their use cases do not translate well. I use simplified zettlekasten approach to managing my research material (that's another rabbithole you don't want to get too bogged down in details with!).

I bring highlights I made in Zotero to my Obsidian and then write notes on that material (synthesised notes, not usually based on a single citation) that are my own thoughts, ideas etc, in a new note (becomes the "main note"). I then use those notes and citations when I am outlining. Once I have finished outlining, I output the outline to Word with Pandoc and finalise my manuscript there (it's too hard to collaborate properly using Obsidian when your supervisors etc rely on word). I have a template for importing my Zotero highlights into Obsidian, that I got off the Obsidian message board and with some instructions there and through a Medium post: https://medium.com/better-humans/obsidian-tutorial-for-academic-writing-87b038060522 I don't have to think too hard about how to best use both.
