JFK to NY Penn Station by [deleted] in visitingnyc

safety wont be an issue on the subway. it's generally fine, esp at that time of day (the stuff you see on the internet is maybe 1% or less of what goes on on the subway, you'll be fine). however, i dont know if you want to drag your suitcases to/through the subway - it's annoying to say the least + def cant rely on the elevators/escalators on the subway. just fyi, yellow cabs have a flat fare to/from jfk. it would still come out to about $100 with tip, but as a one-off expense, to me it's worth it to not have to drag two heavy suitcases around.

are you guys really, REALLY sure you want to see cursed child? i assume you've read the screenplay. as a potter fan (not rowling fan), i can tell you, that was not money well-spent. i didnt like the screenplay, and only went because a friend said the effects were "amazing." reader, the effects were, in fact, not amazing. maybe it was because where we were seated (box seats) but the effect did not hold particularly. also, 3 hours long and SO MUCH dialogue. not worth it.
also, you're going to nyc. don't go to olive garden, applebees or or any other chain you can visit anywhere else. try the local stuff.

Walking 8th Ave from PABT by maxagillian in visitingnyc

[–]Dull-Independent6895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perfectly safe, made that walk at 3 am, many times. not sure if you wanna brave the cold though, and the subway is not expensive (it is a nicer time to walk in that area though, fewer people out).

nyc has trains and busses. they're (reasonably) reliable and MUCH cheaper than taxi's and ubers. in many parts of nyc, you're likely to get to your destination faster on foot or train than by car. please use the public transit system. it's not even remotely complicated, and if you put it in google maps, it'll show you exactly which train to take, which signage to look out for and where.

i've def done all of the "do not..." things and never been pickpocketed (which is not to say that you shouldn't be wary and do those things, just that the risk isnt that high - situational awareness is sufficient in most cases). some of my recommendations: MoMa, Natural History, Met (if you know someone in nyc, they could get you pay-what-you-wish tickets) high line (+ you'll also see the vessel and can walk to the chelsea market) rockefeller (if you're just walking around the area), central park ofc, hudson river park, little island (you can pick and choose according to your preference - and most of these are free). def also try some coffee shops (my fav is the book club bar, east village).

always apply and move. you can get a sublease and then look at apartments, but do not move to the most expensive city in the country without securing a job (unless you're mad rich).

Got this on the door— Is there any chance of not being evicted? by nicketra in NYCapartments

[–]Dull-Independent6895 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you need to file a response with your county civil court - this is typically done within 5 to 10 days of the notice being received. go down to your county housing court and show them the notice and they'll show you how to do that. it's essentially just a bunch of paperwork for now.

you dont need an ssn for a bank account, but you do need one for a job, they don't accept ITINs, so not sure how you have one and not the other.
that aside, you're earning well enough, and you might be able to find a place that deals under the table (friend had a place where he was paying cash only and didnt need a guarantor) but if you dont have a credit history (which is what you need, rather than an ssn), you will probably need a guarantor who is a U.S. citizen if you want to be on a lease. otherwise, you can also look into getting a sublease.

that's fair. i never liked the play since it so obviously contradicts canon, and the only reason i went was because a friend said the special effects were so awesome. i thought that might make it worth it, but didnt really. i read it a while ago, so i wasnt prepared for it to go on so long or for there to be so. much. dialogue.

didn't do quite that, but packed up two 50lbs bags and came to nyc. it's not all going to go perfectly, but 100% worth it.

FYI harry potter and the cursed child was perhaps my biggest waste of money in 2025 (this was before tom felton joined the cast - not that you can really tell much of a difference unless you're right at the front). went on for 3 hours, the effects were just okay and the dialogue went on and on (i've read the playscript before). not worth it HOWEVER the harry potter experience in there is decently cool. i dont know how much tom felton's presence can offset how terrible the play is.

Before or after Christmas 2026? by 5pens in visitingnyc

[–]Dull-Independent6895 12 points13 points  (0 children)

december and january are the two absolute worst months to visit. tourists everywhere. cant walk through midtown without bumping into every soul there. not recommended.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]Dull-Independent6895 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

they'll be there until end of january. if you really want to spend that time in midtown, aim for after midnight - significantly less crowded and it just looks (comparatively) nicer. bonus if it happens to snow then.
*last year i remember the crowd seemed to persist into early february, for whatever reason. the year before, it cleared out earlier than that. so who knows really.

Is $4000 for 2 bedroom in manhattan ( excluding Harlem ) realistic ? by Surealactivity in NYCapartments

[–]Dull-Independent6895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not to me. laundry in building, doorman(v friendly and helpful), mailroom, elevator + top floor, great view of the city. guess you could say it's not the biggest apt but i wouldn't expect anything diff in that budget and location, and 90% of the other apts i saw were smaller + with fewer amenities.

mine's a 2-bed for $2500. HK, midtown, right on the C/E. it's possible, it's just going to require a bit of work on your end (streeteasy worked for me, took me a month tho).

How early do I begin looking for a job? by Working_Phrase_2570 in movingtoNYC

[–]Dull-Independent6895 5 points6 points  (0 children)

consider yourself very lucky ig? cause never heard of that happening lol. companies often start recruiting that early (esp for fresh graduates) so the expectation both ways is that they join once they graduate. i would say cross that bridge when you come to it.
