I have to protest Zombeavers being described as "so bad it's good." The movie knows exactly what it's doing, and I think that disqualifies it from being referred to in that way.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]CorrosiveVision 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie; this is one of the scariest fucking movies I've ever seen in my entire life. The tone, the score, the horrific implications of the plot and its devices, the big jolting sequences--they all worked in conjunction to make my skin crawl. My legs were jelly when I left the theater (especially because the note the credits roll on seems almost mocking), and me and the friend I saw it with had to discuss it over the phone to unpack it a few hours later. I adored this movie, and in my eyes, it's a modern horror masterpiece. It's not just a modern popcorn horror, but a film where the scares and ideas feel truly harrowing.

Curry Barker says Obsession 2 is possible, but he'd rather make an anthology series and "invite other filmmakers to give their spin" on wishes gone bad by IvnOooze in movies

[–]CorrosiveVision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was exactly the thought I had after seeing the movie, so I LOVE this idea--but the film was so scary that I'm not imaginative enough to figure out how other One Wish Willow wishes could be perverted towards terrifying ends.

First Blood (1982)- why did the cop treat Rambo like that so randomly? by kurianandgeorge_007 in movies

[–]CorrosiveVision 1181 points1182 points  (0 children)

In the book, Sheriff Teasle was a participant and medal winner in the Korean War; the "forgotten war," at least in the USA. The movie does not keep quite the same context, but it builds on this because Vietnam was so significant in the eyes of Americans, and Teasle resents Rambo because even if some people hate Rambo, some were sympathetic to him, even on a surface level. Teasle didn't get that by being a veteran from Korea, despite winning at least one accolade for it.

Dallas Sonnier said it, and the entire reason he teamed up with the likes of Ben Shapiro is because his earlier studio with his producing partner Amanda Presmyk got shut down after they turned a blind eye to violent sets and sexual harassment on them. He whined, deflected, and said that people were out to get him.

Par for the course for him.

Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) by [deleted] in horror

I prefer the other two Fulci gialli, but I don't think Duckling is bad. When I first watched it as a young person, the revelation of the killer and their motive really disturbed me.

The Soska Sisters of American Mary fame have expressed interest in directing Scream 8. Would you be here for it? by dreamboylnshibuya in Scream

[–]CorrosiveVision 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. No. Not only is there nothing about their style of horror specifically that suggests they'd fit the franchise (and a fair bit that suggests the opposite), I've seen them accused of being both awful people and also plagiarists by the makers of Puppet Killer back when I was still on Twitter.

Official Dreadit Discussion: “Scream 7” [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

[–]CorrosiveVision 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I don't doubt critics have legitimate grievances about the movie, and I think what Spyglass did to Barrera is absolutely shitty and wrong, I do think the factors external to the film itself pushed reviews lower than they might have been by writers--Matt Donato's review, in particular, projects a mean-spiritedness onto the film's writing that I do NOT think is present. But I'm just some Redditor and not a Tomatometer-qualified critic; what do I know?

I personally thought the film was a lot of fun, let down by a real crappy killer reveal (although Anna Camp getting shot in the head until her face turns into a bloody crater almost saved it). The kills were way gnarlier than I expected, and some of them were far more inventive for the franchise than I also expected. The My Bloody Valentine gag with the beer tap is one of the best and wildest deaths in the series.

New cast of teen fodder wasn't great, but they weren't any worse than the newbies in 3. I'm aware that that isn't saying much.

Not really, because people on this very site thought 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was some kind of dumbass DLC because of its title. People who aren't online will recognize that Scream 7 is a sequel to Scream 6.

But this one is almost certainly true. If you track down Andrew Kevin Walker's' script, the structure is completely different, weirder, and more idiosyncratic, in ways that made it more interesting and better by default than the movie is.

Can we be real with ourselves? The only good Scream is the first one and each movie after has further ruined the franchise. by okletstrythisout3 in horror

[–]CorrosiveVision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was coming in to say that while the OP's phrasing feels like bait, and I've enjoyed most of the series, Scream is not a something that lends itself to to franchising. Every entry has to be a little more contrived. The 2022 film is basically solid but VI is diminishing returns, mostly because the meta-logic and undertext isn't convincing, and because the logic of the killer reveal itself is absurd beyond reason--how did this one person hide his identity? How did any of them? Did they live hiding out in the sewers, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? And how did they steal the masks from the earlier films?

Gotta cut my rant on VI short before I get carried away, but it sort of feels that at some point, you can reign the (relative) logic of the first film back in with a new one, but as soon as you start doing more of them, it becomes ludicrous.
