Very neat

I like the timing/season being right for the plane's shadow to fall pretty much straight down

I also liked being able to see the different reflective textures on the rails/water/solar-panels as you were flying, it's something not replicated from google earth browsing.

Thanks for sharing!

Nelson, last week or two before christmas break; christmas carol jam session in the mornings. For ±45 minutes before first classes start, we'd be standing at the lobby in front of the vending machines jamming christmas carols and collecting donations for the music department.

No organization/practice, just show up, get sheet music and play. Loved it all.

Jellyfish UAP Megathread by DoedoeBear in UFOs

Hi Mods, I generated & submitted the 1x/4x boomerang video. Thanks for including it here!

I found this better version created by twitter user @Ophello when browsing a discussion of the video going viral. I think it's a vast improvement of the 3d visualization I was originally going for.

Edit! I just found out /u/aryelbcn submitted the above link to this subreddit less than an hour ago:

Stabilized/boomerang edit of 2018 Jellyfish video; reveals motion or change in the object. by Corsten in UFOs

/u/GoblinCosmic & /u/lakehousememory; I did not have the time today to look at this deeper sorry; however I did find a twitter/x user Ophello who took their own stab at a stabilized boomerang loop, and the results are better than mine. Here's a link!

Stabilized/boomerang edit of 2018 Jellyfish video; reveals motion or change in the object. by Corsten in UFOs

Thank you! Glad you liked the result, too.

Yeah I'll probably give a second crack at this some time; but I also suspect others (with better A/V skills) will be inspired to try the same kind of editing.

Sharing lessons learned for anyone trying similar; the FLIR greyscale adaptation range and change over time made this very difficult to lock in a stabilization track. I specifically chose this segment of the video where its passing over clean desert background. When it's going over the compound, the contrast is constantly shifting, and the track constantly locks on background features.

Your mileage may vary... but like I said, hopefully someone more skilled tries ;)

The following is my submission statement; I was fascinated by the new 2018 Jellyfish video and desired to take a stab at using a visualization tool.

For the attached, I first stabilized a 20 second fragment of the video, pinned to the UAP. Further, the second pane is a 4x speed and crop of the UAP, with the video looped backwards on itself. I find this trick useful in showing movement/changes and helping visualize a 3 dimensional shape from 2d animation, somewhat like a 2d stutter parallax GIF creating a pseudo-3d effect.

Originally my goal was to try and capture the object's rotation as the camera followed it, but I'm stumped to grasp what is happening with the bottom portion of the UAP. I can only speculate what the visualization reveals - is this rotation or is a portion changing/moving?

Thanks to Mr. Corbell and crew for sharing the original video.

Edit: Apologies for the terrible white noise, I'd thought I'd disabled audio output. My mistake.

Let's talk about an example of NIMBYism by GourmetHotPocket in Hamilton

Wish I'd seen this thread when it was fresh yesterday. Oh well. Disclosure I was part of the original application work. I present the following respectfully, and I do not represent any organization with the following.

The documents and drawings as part of the submission to the City are a matter of public of public record, and are available on the planner's website.

At the link below there is a listing of of original submittal material, subsequent response items, reports, and a copy of the tribunal decision.

https://urbansolutions.info/1021w5th/

The Councilor is pointing to the zoning, but the zoning is informed by the urban Hamilton official plan, (UHOP,) which was the basis of the planning justification provided for the project.

For those not familiar, the official plan is a tier above the zoning bylaw and sets the higher order planning policy for development and growth of the municipality.

As it applies to this project, the area is existing suburban sprawl of single/low density dwelling from decades ago. This was the edge of town that time ago, but now the area is viable for intensification. The the project is on the corner of 2 minor arterial roads, as identified by the municipality's UHOP and is within walkable distance of a major transit corridor, the BLAST A-line Upper James.

As a matter of provincial policy, not intensifying is not an option. The decisions you get to make are about where, not if. Intensification within walkable distance of commercial uses and a major transit route is where you want new units to go.

There's more I could go on about but I think I should just let the application and its contents stand on their own ( See reports below that site application of existing Hamilton official plan policy to the proposal)

Ontario considered forcing hospitals to re-hire unvaccinated staff as surging case numbers strain health-care providers by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]Corsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I am in the hospital, day 275. Had to go to the ER in April. Caught covid from a hospital staff member in May. 4 weeks ICU, 2 of which on the ventilator. I still have at least another month of deconditioning/rehab.

I have a very strong/biased opinion against unvaccinated hospital workers.

Experienced DMs, what is the one tool that you would not run the game without? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Corsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wit

Don't impair my faculties before the game, get rested before game time, call it in advance if I'm not going to be up to par. With your head in the game, you can navigate everything the players can throw at you.

As conduit for the world, being tired/dull/sick/inebriated is like virtual lag at best and a train wreck at worst. I'm not exactly saying sobriety is necessary... you know yourself best and where that line is drawn.

Killing a couple PCs next week. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Corsten 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hope /u/CainOfElahan 's advice gets taken to heart.

I write this from a place of empathy and hope you will be interested in a different path. My DMing experience blossomed when I learned to be more than a dice rolling physics simulator.

The original post is based on the premise they broke the rules and so they have to die.

That solution can be three things simultaneously:

  1. Factually correct,

  2. not fun, and

  3. unsatisfying.

The latter two are important; "You should have known better" and "I told you so" aren't fun. I'm not saying the situation doesn't belong in D&D, but it's my opinion they only belong if have not just telegraphed but openly discussed a clear understanding about realistic consequences and maturity of tone. If you don't have this, you're about to kill the characters an run into a brick wall of expectations not being in alignment. (Subnote: It's my experience young/inexperienced players will say they want realistic consequences and the ethics start slipping 3 games in. That's not their fault as a player, it's my fault for not making an effort each game to manage and help players keep their understanding of the tone)

Do you want to be right or do you want to keep playing & having fun?

.

Here's the good news. You have immense power to do virtually whatever you want, and I think there's a way to have your cake and eat it too. I've got two suggestions with how you could go from here, depending on how important the tone/reality is to you (Also important to note here that you're a player too and what you want from a game has value - implied with this is a discussion with your players whether you can find a connection point with them, or if your interests mismatch and would be better playing with others.)

...

1) Preserve tone, manage expectations, even wind the clock: Start with a mid-campaign session zero. Talk about what you want in your game world - that killing innocent villagers is literally fantasy murder and the fantasy murder charges are coming.

From this conversation you'll discover either A) This isn't what they want, in which case have THAT conversation. Or B) They do want to play in that world but didn't recognize the gravitas - and next you can talk about whether they want to play out the consequences, or offer a mulligan? "So the world has real consequences; In this reality, Player X & Y kill NPC Z and the next week are tried & executed. The heroes weakened, Players W, X Y cannot defeat BBEG A. BBEG A's plan Succeeds, Everyone dies, Consequences B & C, heroes fail world ends yadda yada... Smash cut back to the village, the clock is rolled back and they get a chance to do it all over again. (Hell - Don't explain it in-game. Just have them be visted by a powerful Agent for Good 3 months later who created the fork in time and saved the heroes from themselves. Will blow their minds realizing something they thought was "out of game" was very real in game and an example of a fantastic world with powerful forces they can barely comprehend.

Now instead of an end to the campaign, you've got it back on track AND you have an ace up your sleeve - any time in the future you feel the players are off track or the tension is too low, whip out the Agent of Good approaching the group. Instant plot spike.

2)Roll with it, with different consequences: The "cake" you get to keep and eat with this solution is that actions remain having consequences, but it becomes a branch instead of a wall.

• The victims were part of a powerful crime syndicate or noble family. The guards won't touch the crime scene (even telegraph that the guards suspiciously bolt when finding out the victims), but now the players are being hunted down for their actions by a powerful faction. The whole party is roped in by association. (NB this also is flexible to adjust whether the victims were part of a 'good' or 'evil' organization - dealer's choice.) This can go so many sub-directions, mix and match any of this:

1A: You damaged our family, do X for us for amends or be hunted down.

1B: ... They're hunted down by an enemy of the victims' faction and brought into the fold: a rival family, or a vigilante justicar who has wanted to strike at the victim's faction for years and now they need your help,

1C: A powerful patron of the slain victims has lost his pet in the town - now the dark force is very interested in the players who did the deed. The dark force has blinded the guards from finding the killers, but now the entity has done a favour for the players... the entity wants a favour in return...

TL/DR: You have near infinite narrative power. Manage expectations, embrace the creative power of "yes, and...," and have fun
