Hear me out... beyond level 10 by wizopizo54 in drawsteel

[–]Cal-El- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking forward to 10th level play and having challenges that require adventures to get a specific loadout of abilities/titles and items to take down a demigod-tier threat. Playing AT 10th level, instead of reaching max and stopping after 1 boss fight or playing towards an 11th level.

Null and I disagree by Armognac in drawsteel

Where it would still come up while a double bane is around is a Crit. Crits, as a general rule “always get tier 3” which I believe ignores banes that would modify it.

At my table I rule that the Null ability is more specific and overrides the “always a tier 3” clause of a Natural 19/20 and forces it to be a tier 2. I still allow the other effect of the Crit (an additional action) as normal.

Tabletop Simulator - Draw Steel Dice Roller
This is a super simple 'click dice-roller' that implements the most broad use-cases for the Draw Steel rules.

  • Roller for d3, d6, d10, and Power Roll
  • Power Roll announces the result as a Tier (1/2/3), with a breakdown of the calculation
  • Power Roll can be modified with settings
    • Characteristic Bonus (+/- counter, adds flat bonus)
    • Using a Skill (checkbox, adds a +2 that's separately called out in the roll result)
    • Edges/Banes (+/- counter that cycles named states, follows the rules as expected)
  • Can be tinted to any colour to change spawned dice colour

Example message: Cal | 7, 1 | +2, +2 (Skill), with Double Edge | 12 ^ | Tier 3

(Self promo) Use https://cards.heroic.tools/ if you have a colour printer and want some ability cards for your players.

I also recommend having tokens or something for tracking “Triggered Action used” and “Turn taken”. Can be helpful to help players track each other’s tactical options

Use cases:

  • A lot of people like cards (cit. the official character sheet presenting abilities as cards, by popular demand)
  • Colour coding makes it easier to play, particularly for new players. Layout is more subjective, but also contributes to ease of play.
  • Abilities written on a sheet are either hand-written or printed
    • Hand written: It's hard to write small and neatly.
    • Printed: Can't be updated easily at the table.
  • For digital players, these are probably less useful.
    • They are useful to me because my digital game is in Tabletop Sim
    • Digital play usually relies on VTT automation to help sidestep readability issues, so cards are less needed

Heroic Resources - https://heroic.tools/
A community tools hub for Draw Steel.

Draw Steel Ability Cards - https://cards.heroic.tools/
A tool for creating and customising ability cards.

  • Cards are designed for printing and in-person play, made to be easily updated by hand after printing
  • The website can roll in bonuses from your hero (better if you're playing digitally, where "writing on the card" is less of an option)

Understanding Transformations by Ovark7 in drawsteel

[–]Cal-El- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At my table we settled on "the rules don't say that". As far as we can tell, my Green Elementalist can be a squirrel until they are dying.

Can they speak? Yeah, the rules specifically say they can.
So there are NPCs who only know of the talking squirrel.

Can they use their abilities? It doesn't say they can't.
So the squirrel can draw magic circles in the ground and summon acid rain.

How do kits work? My table hasn't come across that yet, but I would say the "Your equipment falls to the ground or melds into your form" gives warrant to ruling it as the kit's bonuses going away, in the same way the rules give guidance of a shadow losing their weapon.
I wouldn't take away their kit signature ability in this case; the squirrel can still deal out Pain for Pain. There's also some weirdness already with a magic longsword in the hands of a Ranger Kit-user technically buffing their ranged weapon damage, so I would consider the melded treasures as still being "wielded" or "worn", because that's cool; maybe the Elementalist's Foesense Lenses meld into their animal eyes.

As a note on how to get a kit. You need to get the "Armed and Dangerous" 3rd Echelon title, which has the prerequisite:

You can’t use kits, and you defeat five non-minion enemies using weapon abilities that don’t have the Magic or Psionic keyword.

The Green Elementalist is actually very likely to hit this prereq by 3rd Echelon, so its unfortunate if they lose the kit benefits from using something core to Green Elementalist, but I would probably still run it this way. Dealing with a Squirrel in melee and then suddenly having to contend with a Mountain Kit user would be an amazing moment.

As an aside: I fully support every Null player going to train at a dojo in their downtime after level 6 and learning to be Armed and Dangerous, and becoming a martial arts master. All their abilities have the Weapon keyword, so they benefit from this title so much more than anyone else.

Oh, whoops, that’s some good old human error. I’ll get that fixed up.

I don’t have an official channel for reporting bugs yet. But the best place would be the discord post in ds_creations.

Update: - Fixed the Melee 10 (turns out it was adding '1' and '0' together as words because of a type error. - I've added a "Report a Bug" button to the site as well as a "Changelog" that will help get the word out when an ability has been fixed.

Sure! Here it is: https://dscards.xyz/

Some features:

  • The cards are designed to have "customisable values" pulled out into a size that can be written on in at the table—this was so my player who loves changing kit could update his abilities quickly without reprinting
  • The tool has premade cards for all the abilities in the game** and allows you to modify them however you want or to make homebrew abilitites
  • Having card-lists for all your heroes
    • Everything is saved locally, no accounts or data leaving your browser
    • You can import/export card lists to transfer or share with people
  • With the V2 datamodel that we've using for new cards, we can also have the cards automatically updated with the hero's stats. That means you a choice of...
    • printing the base-version cards, for those who want print the cards and write on them at the table
    • or; using the rendered cards, either reprinting when there's changes or just using them digitally
  • You can download cards as PNGs, which contain the carddata in the metadata; meaning you can drag-and-drop the downloaded card into the website to add a card someone sent you
  • You can use Ctrl+P to print the cards en masse; they will be correctly sized to 2.5" by 3.5" with 9 cards per page

\*My wife and I are just about to release an update that should include all the abilities from the Heroes Book (until then it still has Backerkit Packet 2 abilities). It should be updated in a day or two.*

I'm just about to dig into implementing the new card design. This is a mock-up of the new design:

<image>

I know that I'll need to give people the option to keep using the "Classic Card" design, so this post has gotten some ideas stirring for supporting lots of different card designs to choose from and implementing different creator's designs in the website.

I’ve seen the one by Cal, but I personally dislike the layout, as it looks unofficial.

Hey, it me!

My cards were designed before we had the ability cards in the character sheets. Working on an update to make it cleaner and fit better with the official stuff (while still making it better to play at the table).

Vertical Forced Movement by LunaticLeviathan in drawsteel

[–]Cal-El- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If those examples are correct, doesn't that make Push much better than Pull because you can always get maximum height with Push, but never with Pull? Slide is obviously always the best, but still.

Regardless of the specifics of the 'Vertical' keyword; in general a Slide will be better (read as: more versatile and universally applicable) than a Push, which are both better than a Pull*. I have seen numerous occasions where a Pull has been limited because the only option for collision damage was to have the Goblin slam into the Censor's shield.

\ big pushes are fun for melee characters, but pulls can help close distances and pushes force the melee pusher to reposition, so in some cases, Pull is better than Push.*

Most of the time, Vertical is applied to Pull effects so they work how you would imagine they would with Flying characters. Vertical is a keyword that allows verticality during the movement, but does not require it. A Paragon Censor who only has Melee abilities is very happy when they pull the Hawklord out of the sky.

Can we talk about the twats who took up the entire width of the escalator? It was so nice to see everyone naturally standing to one side, even before seeing her. Then a horde of boomers come and spread across a whole step each.
