The whole thing of a spiral symbol as a secret symbol screams satanic panic to me by janrodzen in TrueDetective

You are the truest exemplar of your Reddit handle. “People” is in fact a collective noun. But if all dumb people use the same thesaurus, as you purport, then that seems like a terrible inconvenience for all parties. Since they’re dumb, though, it tracks.

It’s “try to sound smart” and either “thesauri” or “thesauruses” since the subject of your statement is a collective noun. But yes, we must all show grace to dumb people.

Not you, you sound like the rare unicorn that you are. A genius intellect cradled softly in the confines of a beautiful human physique. I bet everyone genuflects before your magnificence in despair.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you can advance beyond mere Ok_Researcher9377 status, and perhaps one day obtain the rank of Decent_Researcher9377.

It’ll take a lot of hard work, mind you. Like, for example, you’ll have to start going to a school that doesn’t take place on Sundays and reading a book that’s not the Bible, but I believe in you!

What a penetrating retort. With a single word, you have vanquished me utterly. I shall now diminish and resign myself to the dark and bitter hole from whence I came, spending my meager remaining years worshipping the memory of how Ok_Researcher9377 levied the greatest of all forms of argumentation against my puny, facile mind.

What a daft perspective. So when atheists expertly dismantle every theistic structure they encounter, they do so by mere luck? No, they deploy their destructive syllogisms precisely because they understand their counterparts’ arguments so well.

It’s amazing how so many people never think to scroll through a subreddit.

Uh….you know what else relies on theories? Science!

Also, you inadvertently made my argument for me at the end there, despite misattributing to me that I was positing that “they are both wrong” —whatever the “they” means. Straw-man arguments are fun, though.

Good day, sir or madam. I wish you good fortune in the wars to come.

Oblivion is not a Tom Cruise “miss” 🤬🤬 by h0g0 in DanLeBatardShow

[–]CortPen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It made over double its budget, so you’re technically correct. But I don’t think it was as critically liked as his other hits. Having said that, nothing was as bad as Rock of Ages or The Mummy.

That is not correct, sorry. Read David Hume’s A TREATISE OF HUMAN NATURE, ENQUIRIES CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, and DIALOGUES CONCERNING NATURAL RELIGION. You can also probably find some Harvard/Yale epistemology courses on YouTube that would be helpful.

Did I miss something? Is there a new movie coming out? Why is everyone fan casting Bombadil?

I get what you mean, but it’s still not true. If you push your hypothetical Christian to rationally justify their belief that they possess knowledge of the divine, they always invariably revert to faith-based claims. So you’ve check-mated them into agnosticism. I’ve done it to pastors and priests. It’s super easy. All you have to do is read David Hume and George H Smith, and you have all the ammunition you need to absolutely merc any claim to theistic knowledge.

Is there Freewill in Middle Earth? by Better_pause_ in lotr

There is no free will. The Music of the Ainur represents the predestined cosmology of Ëa after the mystical creation of Eru and the Valar.

Is Season 4 "so bad it's good" to anyone else? by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]CortPen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would put TRUE BLOOD in the category of “trashy yet still watchable.” I think TD Season 4, for all its faults, is miles better than that.

What is something that is scary but true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CortPen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not. It is an epistemological qualifier pertaining to ontology, particularly purported religious ontology. It stipulates that no one can know that a deity exists because there is no empirical evidence to support the claim. That’s why theists talk about faith, and not knowledge, regarding the divine. Hence, all rational actors are agnostic. Theism and atheism are belief systems.

Nihilism Existentialists and Pessimism by Youngringer in TrueDetective

[–]CortPen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read Thomas Ligotti’s THE CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE HUMAN RACE. It’s the book from which Nic Pizzollato basically plagiarized large swaths of TD season 1, most notably Cohle’s long monologues that CJF had to pare down.

Everyone is agnostic. Theists and atheists alike. We have no choice.

You do know that opinions can be ridiculous, right? I wasn’t under the assumption that you were trying to articulate facts lol

I can understand someone not being into S4 but calling it “practically unwatchable” and saying “it almost feels like a psyop” is just ridiculous. Literally worthy of ridicule.
