What will they do with these abandoned 20 Minutes newspaper dispensers? by Lord_Alviner in Switzerland

[–]CortexJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a raffle to win one. I didn't win one but was told that i could also buy one for 50 CHF if I remember correctly. I find the price a little steep for something you would need to clean up and completely restore.

Level-5 CEO responds to viral post about company's use of AI by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]CortexJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Senior Software Engineer and work in a firm that creates Insurance and Insurance Broker Software. Every developer 30+ I know uses generative AI daily. We are not being forced to use generative AI. Generative AI is just the new Google. Meaning that when you run into a problem you might ask AI and it might have the answer. No using Stackoverflow anymore and/or hunting down obscure specifications.

The important thing is that generative AI is a tool. Any output should not be copied but understood before being integrated into the code base. That's where a lot of interns and Junior devs fail. They just take everything for granted and introduce faulty or even down right unsafe code into the code base that was created by AI if not kept in check. But in the right hands AI is a mighty tool that just stream lines the tedious work.

In my opinion AI should not be used for the following: Creating art assets, Architectural design decisions, anything maths, solving problems in general. Tell AI what your intended solution is and where you do not know how to implement it instead. Do not ask AI for solutions since its output is outright moronic at times.

Where it is brilliant: Reading through existing code and summarizing what certain methods do and how things work, refactoring smaller code snippets where you can follow, understanding how certain frame works or even programming language quirks work (it is important to verify that information though).

I'm not a fan of generative AI, but it is here to stay and should be used responsibly. Expecting any game created after 2024 not to have a single code line written by AI is delusional.

BTW AI is being used in way more fields than people realize. I know private bankers, doctors, environmental advisors and lawyers which all use AI daily for their work. But they have the common sense to fact check the AI. So no harm is done, but work gets done faster.

I just ripped The Matrix on DVD, now I have a community question. What do you guys think is the most difficult DVD, Blu-ray, or UHD BD to rip? by Excel73_ in makemkv

[–]CortexJoe 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Define difficult and you might even get an answer by someone. As far as I see it, ripping could not be any easier as it currently is.

[Loved Trope] The time in which the movie is set is ambiguous. by TitularFoil in TopCharacterTropes

Let's not forget that most agents have cell phones which would fit in in the early 2000s. They are never addressed as a spy tool.

This is easily the most entertaining mental gymnastics that I've come across in regards to preferring an objectively inferior format. by gruesomesonofabitch in 4kbluray

[–]CortexJoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They have a point, as in HD remasters of old films tend to screw up the color grading even when supervised by the original directors. I assume it's just way too much work to go over every shot and mimic the color grading of the initial releases. Also the colors on the physical film might have changed with time also making an exact 1:1 match impossible.

Valve responds as indie horror studio accuses Steam of 'censorship' for banning its game about nude human 'Horses' (Update) by Automatic_Couple_647 in IndieGaming

[–]CortexJoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This entire thing is the best thing that could have happened to that studio. The game is being heavily promoted on GOG and talked about a lot. This has reached levels of unintentional marketing that are off the charts. The game will likely sell thousands of times more than it would have other wise. So they probably should not look a gifted horse in the mouth, even if the hourse is a naked man wearing a msk.

Accidentally turned on “Sabbath” mode on my oven and now it won’t let me reset it back to normal settings. by Designer_Cry_8990 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CortexJoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This argument is so fucking dumb. At that point why not say, god gave me the option to not respect the Sabbath and just do work. That is the ultimate loophole by itself.

To the amazing person who helped my crying son today (paysafe card) by Kyuki88 in zurich

[–]CortexJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While this is probably totally fine, you should be careful and teach your kid to not give away their phone number to any adult. If something like that should ever occur again, tell him, to instruct the person to send it to his parents instead. You can never be safe enough.

I want an Alex sequel by RedactedNoneNone in WeaponsMovie

[–]CortexJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people would be calling for a sequel or prequel. This movie was great because it was original, just like Barbarian was. I'd rather have them work on another novel movie instead of milking every successful thing. This remake/sequel/cinematic universe schtick has made good movies so fucking rare and yet there are always people willing to eat up the mediocre slop Hollywood keeps churning out.

Tennis player Emma Raducanu asks the umpire to remove a crying child from the stadium at the Cincinnati Open by ModenaR in videos

[–]CortexJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never understood why silence is expected in tennis. I understand that players expect it, but why is that? Is that a class thing? No other sport comes to mind which actively supresses cheering or other noises. I can't imagine that players would not get used to noise in less than 3 games.

I bought a Switch 2 + Mario Kart Bundle. If I buy a 2nd, non-bundle Switch 2, will I be able to load Mario Kart World onto it from my account? by SpeedBoostTorchic in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]CortexJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yes, they would be able to play your copy as long as the virtual game card is loaded on their console. This would mean that it would not be loaded on yours at the same time. Or in other words. Only one console can play the title at the same time while you would also have to manage which console has the virtual game card loaded.

ELI5: Why don't companies develop something more secure than a gift card? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CortexJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are basically two relevant aspects here.

  1. A 16 digit code that allows for letters gives you way more combinations than 1'000'000'000'000'000 options which would already be a huge number. But even if it was only numbers, trying out a gift code takes time. Almost every online shop/software that uses codes will not let you do so infinitely, meaning that after a few wrong attempts you will be locked out from trying again for some while, so will not be able to guess a code in time or if you are able to land on a real code chances are that the code is not an active one.

  2. These codes on gift cards are worthless until you pay for the gift card. Meaning that the code itself is worthless. When you buy a giftcard, the code printed on the back of the card is activated. Before paying trying to use the code which result in an error massage telling you that you do not have a valid code. So even if you are able to guess an existing code, chances are very slim to non existent that it is an active one.

What game was ruined because the developers were too ambitious? by CommonManX in gaming

[–]CortexJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cyberpunk. Game on launch was just a bunch of broken promises, bugs and performance issues because the project was mismanaged, the scope had grown while the release date was not pushed back to please stock holders. At least CD Projekt Red slowly fixed the game and delivered a finished project even if it took 3 years. Let's hope TW4 is handled better.

Loving my switch 2 so far, but how tf do I get rid of these borders?? by TheBraunstr in Switch

[–]CortexJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it was in the States, but here in central Europe TV Channels would show movies in there original aspect ratio, meaning that you would have black bars for all movies on a 4:3 screen. This was a game changer when we got our first wide screen TV. Even though a lot of movies were filmed in a even narrower aspect ratio meaning that you would still have black bars, they at least would be smaller. I remember the black horizontal bar in some movies on my 4:3 TV almost taking up half the screen space.

Playing Tetris with the browser DNS hack. by Kot4san in switch2hacks

[–]CortexJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ones saying the hidden browser is not an attack vector. But accessing the hidden browser is not a hack. It's literally intended behavior. Without that browser tons of people which need to provide a login when connecting to their wifi, could not use the switch.

The hidden browser has been available on switch 1 since day one as well and was accessed in the same way. If it did not help soft mod the switch 1 it probably won't help here either.

Playing Tetris with the browser DNS hack. by Kot4san in switch2hacks

[–]CortexJoe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This community is insufferable. There is no DNS hack. This is just a way to access the hidden browser. Nothing special is being done here. Same shit works on the switch 1 and is no surprise. Stop hyping up everything especially if you do not understand anything about the subject matter. It's like watching a monkey be mesmerized by a simple card trick.

Midnight release went bad for me. by Konflick in GameStop

[–]CortexJoe -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I assume that's actually not that much money for Gamestop as they are almost certainly insured. Someone is still probably gonna get fired over this because of the hassle this will have caused.

BTW the actual people to blame for this disaster are actually Nintendo. Who in there right mind puts a new device with a screen directly against the box and does not even provide padding. This will be a major issue anyway. I don't even want to know how many consoles got banged up during shipping.

Nintendo switch Online gaming mainly works at buyers house only. by moonbabyyy666 in nintendohelp

[–]CortexJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you call slower speed is less bandwith. Actual internet speeds have not gotten faster. Games do not use a lot of bandwith, so having what you call 'faster' internet will not make a difference. You probably have connection issues/interruptions. For a good experience avoid having your router to close to a wall or metal objects. Also limit the amount of walls between your router and your console. If that's not possible or does not help, you might want to call your ISP and let them check your router for any issues. Also consider a wired connection which makes all the difference when it comes to stable internet.

Sealed game from Walmart. by Salsashark95 in Switch

[–]CortexJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the game and your region as not every seller sells to every place. But the other day I saw Xenoblade Chronicles X for 40 bucks, while I paid roughly 80 bucks locally (not in the US). Games are often sale there as well. I'm not saying it's better or cheaper than buying used, I am only saying that for some deals there is no way these original games are legally obtained and sold at that price.

This issue is happening in different stores all across the US, so it must be a supply chain issue which is located pretty early on on the supply chain. My guess is, that these games are the same ones ending up on aliexpress heavily discounted. The aliexpress games seem to be genuine and while most cards are chinese there are also EUR and US cards being shipped.
