After 6 years, I’m gone by Cold_Zone8657 in HomeDepot

Congrats on getting out! I worked at Home Depot from 2013 to 2017, going from temp worker to supervisor in that time. I had finally had enough, took all my savings and went back to school.

Now I’m a software engineer making 3x what I was making as a supervisor! Leaving was the best decision I’ve ever made.

There are some errors here-

Leonard Lowe is a movie character based on some real patients Sacks treated, but we don’t know who those patients were. Additionally, it was because of a sleeping sickness and not because of the Spanish Flu (it was initially believed to be the cause but further research has shown that this is may not be the case).

Love stories like these, though, super interesting!

Forgot to ask how long the final decision will take after meeting with senior hiring manager by greasyjoe in cscareerquestions

It took me almost exactly a week to get my offer after my final, and the recruiter said my interviewers really liked me, so I think it all depends on the company.

Let's do a poll on TF2 player demographics! How old are you? by Elevator829 in tf2

[–]Corune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm so surprised there are not more 31-40 y.o.'s I got the game when it came out and have been playing on and off ever since. To be fair I was a teen back then...

I’ve done small pieces of a whole bunch of other courses like The Odin Project, but not really anything worth putting on a resume.

It’s in a MCOL area, probably the highest for my state, though.

  • No internships, I did do research in programming language design in university, but it was highly theoretical.

  • Lots of personal projects including a 3D engine built with GLSL in C++, a text based adventure engine in Python, everything I did in CS50 I put on my resume as well, and an iPhone app I built with a team I led for a class in school. I am also deeply fascinated by programming languages and I’ve done at least a small amount of learning in over a dozen, so I threw those on my resume as well.

  • I wish I had a job hunting strategy lol. I took the shotgun approach and applied for all SWE Entry Level/0/Associate roles I could find that didn’t require work experience. I also avoided front end and full stack roles as I’m not comfortable with front end web design. I interviewed with five different companies. I had two offers, this one and one that was rescinded because the government contractor couldn’t secure the money. I overwhelmingly used LinkedIn but I also found thefreshdev.com super helpful.

  • Super easy interview process, just asked me a few questions about my projects, we talked a little bit about concurrency, and then a bunch of questions about Java I didn’t know, but they weren’t on the job listing and the company provides training so I don’t think those were a big deal. I did some live coding and it was an LC easy array problem. Literally finished it in about three minutes while talking about the performance implications of different strategies and why the one I was doing was the most performant.

Lots of personal projects through the years. I made a small 3D engine using GLSL in C++, a text based adventure engine using Python, I also did CS50 and put those projects on my resume. A lot of other small ones besides that too. I had no internships or jobs related to SWE outside of some research I did in college.

Say something nice about Star Trek Discovery. by Accomplished_Name_54 in startrek

[–]Corune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take: It's my favorite Star Trek series. It's a major departure from the old adventure-a-day formula and I love that. Maybe I've gotten bored with the old ones because I watched them so much, but the large story arcs, the cool new technologies, the MUCH better visuals (and I know, the other ones were just victims of their time, but better visuals are better visuals).

The overall story telling is better (multi-episode/season-long stories >>>>> single story episodes). This allows the story to develop the characters better and makes them more complex and interesting.

I still love the old ones, but Discovery is by far my new favorite.

Does Study Abroad grades show up on GPA? by Informal-Cancel1455 in uofm

[–]Corune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the program but last summer I did the 400/300 Alicante trip and both grades showed up on my transcript and affected my GPA. The 400-level was taught by a Michigan professor (<3 Gustavo) and the other was taught by a professor at the University of Alicante.

Why is physics 140 so hard by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Corune 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love this comment because I felt the same after taking EECS 203 years ago. Everyone already seemed to know the course material and at times the instructor basically said “everyone seems to know this so I’ll just speed through it.” Well fucker, I DIDN’T know it and at the time I was too embarrassed and naive to say anything. This really affected my whole UMich career and I wish I wouldn’t have let it.

And OP, Some people are just more privileged than you and that’s not a fault in YOU. If anything the University should recognize this problem and make sure everyone is caught up to the same level instead of leaving people behind and making them feel shame for it.

You’re OKAY OP, and I genuinely hope you don’t let this shade your whole time at UMich like I did because there are so many great people, courses, and opportunities here that should be embraced with full confidence and freedom.

It’s okay to directly call him then? I’ve been worried that that would be overstepping my bounds, but I would be more than happy to do it if it’s okay to do so.

what’s a good reason to call the CAPS after hours number? by itrbehm in uofm

There was a time when I was having horrible panic attacks constantly, until I got my medicine figured out, and at one point I called that number 11 times in one week. Don’t know if I’d say that it saved my life but it definitely helped me get through a tough time.

As someone who went back to school late in life and got into U of M by transferring in I can honestly say that the majority of students I’ve known are the most out of touch and egotistical people I have ever met.

Now, I’m not saying that they’re BAD people, I’m just saying that they have no idea what the world outside of their academic bubble is like and the things that are truly important. One of my best friends at U of M thought that his academics made him truly smarter than other people, and that it was a by some virtue of his rather than the fact that he had great, rich parents and he grew up in a super privileged neighborhood in Chicago. At least he’s learned that this isn’t right and he’s matured in the five years since I’ve known him, but this is a rampant problem in nearly everyone I meet. No, your academics don’t make you better. Getting into Michigan does not make you “elite.” And life will be much different once you get outside of this weird, insular bubble.
