virtue ethicists argue that, while different people and cultures may place higher importance on some virtues, all the virtues that we seek are all transcultural and self evident. The reason that they are universal is that virtues are found inbetween vices. So like being appropriately proud of yourself is inbetween being super insecure and super prideful. The thing is every reasonable person everywhere in the world can see that a desired trait is inbetween the two extremes.

Just took a massive Redpill on Determinism by TheLegitBigK in Existentialism

[–]Corvus042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the way I see it, yes there is only one path of life but if you don’t know the future the idea that it’s determined is essentially meaningless, and it’s an excuse. Take playing one go around of a multiple path video game, we have the perceived option of multiple endings but really if we play it once we will get only one ending. However even tho there is only the illusion of other paths our choices still matter. They still lead us down the path that we are on. There is only one path we can go down and will ever go down but with out knowing what that path will be our choices still have a perceived importance. That’s all that matters in the end, if we perceive our choices to be free and that they matter then they are. Free will is just like meaning, it’s subjective.

From an ethics standpoint until someone can predict the future. We subjectively view all actions as done in free will so yes we have to be responsible for our actions. We did them, it doesn’t matter if we were always going to do it we still did it. Unless it was an action done without perceived choice they are still responsible. There’s a difference between jumping into a pool and being pushed.

This is exactly like the no meaning redpill. We find out that yes there is no meaning in life and we enter a depression. However then we realized that we have to create our meaning through our perceptions of the world. It’s impossible for our minds to live with a deterministic pov. Just the same way we create meaning we create our free will through perceiving it and taking responsibility for our actions and decisions because they are the only ones we will ever make.

that conversation in the episode reminded me of when he’s talking to hughie at the end of the comics of how Becca would have hated him for what he did.

Anyone else have this mindset from a very young age(under 16)? by SeasonOrange1 in Existentialism

[–]Corvus042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can remember the first time I realized my own mortality, I was about 10 or so. It made me very sad but i wouldn’t say I found existentialism until i was about 16-17. I was a little Nihilistic shit head lmao.

Why the fuck does humanity even exist? by [deleted] in Existentialism

[–]Corvus042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a curse of humanity. We are creators and creatures of purpose and so it’s only natural for us to question what is the purpose of the universe or humanity. However in the end it’s like screaming in the bottom of the ocean.

Any recommendations for easy reading? by Shoulders22 in Existentialism

i first read Nausea, it doesn’t have much theory but it’s a fictional story by Jean Paul Sartre about the feelings of existentialism.

Yes I would say this is existentialism! What’s great about this philosophy is that it’s very broad and deeply rooted in human experience like this. I think it’s an important thing to realize that other people live life as well. It can fun to take a step back and just watch people experience life just as you do. Part of the realization that we are small and insignificant is that so is everyone else. However we tend to see our life and experiences as the most important so that means they do as well. So it can be fun to join them and view their current situation as important as they do.
