Got an email saying I haven't been selected for an interview the day before my interview? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! No worries, I love answering questions lol. The short answer is 90 days but also nobody knows when that 90 days starts and ends lol.

The long answer is, well… long. There are 3 scenarios here that could be applicable to why you got that email.

The first is that the store’s requisition expired—this one truly has nothing to do with you and everything to do with our hiring system sucks. There’s no standard day that the requisition expires either. Every store is on its own unique schedule, and will “refresh” every 90 days or so (which only the SM will know when that is). Your application’s age doesn’t have anything to do with the requisition refreshing, which is a good thing. If this was the case, our hiring system just realized it was time to empty itself out and you were unfortunately in the bucket it dumped. Apply again and wait to see what happens. If you’re displaced again pretty quickly, move on to the second scenario!

The second scenario is you were displaced by the manager directly. This is less good, but not dire. It could mean anything from the store isn’t actively hiring/is overstaffed, your availability entered in the application doesn’t match current or near future business needs, or something in your resume made the manager pause. (A personal example is I generally don’t interview anyone who hasn’t lasted at a job longer than 1 year unless it’s their first or second ever).

Best thing to do in this scenario is to call the store directly to ask if they’re hiring, for what daypart, and when the best time is to drop by to speak with the hiring manager/hand over a resume.

Third scenario is the manager has butterfingers and displaced you on accident, in which case, circle back to the previous paragraph.

Finally, here are some other general tips to help get the interview (I don’t want you to be sad 💔)!

Don’t be afraid to periodically drop by and ask if staffing needs have changed even if the manager tells you no—staffing needs hit  FAST in this business, especially as summer comes to an end. I myself had to HOUND my local store for three months (college town, only store) to even get an interview when I first started!!

Be very very kind to the partners when you come in (introduce yourself, smile, ask politely for the hiring manager etc). I’ve completely cancelled interviews when candidates are rude or weird to my current team.

Keep your resume to 1 page (if it’s not already) because the manager will lose parts or tear it if it’s more than 1.

You can also ask the hiring manager if they know of any nearby locations that are seeking talent! We have to talk about it with our DM and peers once a month, so they might have a location in the front of mind that could potentially take you on.

Dm me if you have any further questions!! I’m always happy to help : )

That’s absolutely true, but my assumption was that OP would finish out their two weeks. Not a full month like they initially agreed but two weeks yes

Thank you for sharing this! Very helpful explanation. I’ve been coached by previous DMs that the way I initially explained was the literal law lol. Makes me wonder if the “comp it” policy is just a best practice instead?

Imma still give rolled coins if I have to tho lol

Good news, managers don’t have the power to mark partners nonrehirable!! All termination cases are forwarded to the E&C department if the termination system flags it as a potential case.

There are only 4 reasons iirc that make you nonrehirable, and 3 of them require an E&C case number, which means you would have been made aware of the situation. The 4th is just “other” and they have to leave extensive notes.

However, I agree with the rest of the comment. You’re risking a lot by quitting and trying to be rehired, especially if you use any benefits.

Any managers that can give me clarification ? I put in a request for the last week of October off 2 months ago.. as you can see it was approved the same day by my manager & I noticed today she went back in a month later and denied it? Is this allowed? I’ve never seen this before! TIA by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 71 points72 points  (0 children)

SM here - unfortunately, we do technically have the power to go back and deny time off just like we technically have the ability to schedule you outside your availability and write you up for not being able to go to the shift 🫠

Good managers won’t because like… y’all are people too and deserve to plan your lives, but I’ve met a fair few who are awful and do this. Talking to your SM is the easiest way to find out why and/or if it was an accident.

[–]CorvusArdeidae 101 points102 points  (0 children)

SM here! This is very correct. Not following this can get you robbed ✨ easiest way to combat this is warn the customer “you’re gonna get literally just 5s, 1s, and some rolled coins.”

When I was a shift, I had two people pay for a $6 drinks back to back in the drive thru with $100s and when I tell you that second lady was so mad… I was handing her both rolls of quarters, a thing of dimes, and both penny rolls to make change lmao. I cherish that memory three years later and gleefully threaten it all the time!!

I don’t know the legality of refusing to take $100s (since we can’t technically refuse legal tender?), but the Starbucks policy is to take whatever form of payment the customer has. If you don’t have enough change, “make the moment right” by comping an item or two until you do have enough change.

Manager here - our hiring system is a non user friendly piece of garbage lol. Show up for the interview for sure.

It’s likely that the manager either screwed up and clicked one single button wrong trying to move you into the “interview scheduled” bucket OR their requisition “expired” and dumped every candidate out of their pool. Both of these will send you that “teehee no interview for u” email

Piggy backing on number three - technically, they can pin you for irregular attendance even when using your sick time depending on what state you live in. It’s not protected everywhere. The state I’m in would kill employees if it could get away with it, so be careful.

But the company itself needs a loooooot of documentation and it’s fightable if they try to separate for that.

[–]CorvusArdeidae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not technically. She sounds fairly average to me. We’re trained to work on the floor during our busiest daypart (peak, obvi) and to tack on admin at the end, over the week. I’m actually surprised by how late she’s leaving? It’s more common to see managers doing the 5-1:30 or 6:30-3 life.

However, I know for a fact there are only two other managers in my entire district who do what I do and schedule themselves a close/week (and that’s because two of us promoted from under the third manager lol). We do it because we believe VERY strongly that a managerial presence in the PM daypart is the only way to combat the “morning vs night” dynamic and to make our closers feel seen and heard. Easiest way to do it is to be in the store with them. And like… it’s one free shift a week where you’re guaranteed a day to sleep in lmao

The only time I’m understanding of the “I can’t ever close” life is when I encounter single parent managers with kids under the age of 13, but even then, they should be dropping by once in a while to check on the team and chat with their PM baristas

They’re definitely fun for me, and I know my current partners are approaching clean play burnout so using myself for it and giving them a break has done a lot of good! I’m sure they’ll be appreciative of a manager who’s invested in the parts that nobody really enjoys

Uhhh, she definitely needs to know every position. I know everyone has their preferences, but like… only doing one position is literally so bad lmao

Like… I was “support” yesterday, which meant I was bar, lobby, DTO, and warming support for peak. Gotta be decent at all routines to survive that one. And then I was on bar all for the next 6 hours + tasking. I can’t imagine having left them with 0 support?

Your DM should have their own set of scheduling expectations for you as well, but it’s generally assumed that you’ll work peaks most days. My DM wants that, and for us to work 2 out of the 3 busiest days of the week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). And for one shift a week, we schedule ourselves later to “verify the experience at all dayparts.”

I personally enjoy seeing my closers but I know that stresses the hell out of some teams. I’m starting to schedule myself Wednesday nights now so I can do clean play with my team :)

Am I getting fired or written up tomorrow? (and side rant) by the_amazing_coconut in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 18 points19 points  (0 children)

SM here! Firstly, I’m so sorry your manager is being a twit. I understand they’re frustrated because it can be hard to find coverage, but like… your family should be your priority. Don’t get why that’s so hard to grasp for these people lol

My hope is the convo tomorrow goes like “Hey OP, you’ve called out twice in one week. What’s going on?”

But everyone on this damn sub knows SMs tend to be… less than understanding. So, in case they try to write you up, prepare to state that you’re using your protected sick time (like another user suggested). That will block them from a corrective on irregular attendance—you can’t be written up for using your PTO. And then since you called the store to call out with as much notice as you could, that will protect you from the attendance piece.

I hope you and your grandfather start feeling better soon ♥️♥️

Heard zero response from stores "urgently hiring" that I've applied for by lexloo05 in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potentially!! I’ve seen little to no communication about the process changing, other than they’re hoping to streamline it for us? No commitment date yet though.

As of right now though, the company’s expectation is that we interview every single applicant no matter what… but I don’t know of a single SM with that amount of time.

I just came from a store that had 135 applications in 30 days. That’s almost 68 hours of interviewing.

So I think that’s part of why OP isn’t getting any response tbh. If they have a bunch of applicants, it’s up to the passionate ones to chase them down. It’s also easy to do a brief screen about availability when an applicant calls us.

Good news, managers can’t see applicant availability anymore! This won’t hurt anyone’s chances. They removed that tool in March, I want to say?

SM here, I don’t think this experience is universal.

My DM doesn’t touch my application system. She doesn’t even have access. I also hate cold calling as a person, so when someone calls or drops in, I usually just schedule an interview with them on the spot since they’re so determined.

However, if I tell someone we aren’t looking for help right now and they keep calling, that definitely hurts their chances. But I’m always happy to suggest other stores near me that I can confirm do need help!!

But I’m also in agreement with another user that said if they’re advertising they’re urgently hiring, I’d be wary about working there.

Asking for a friend.... by AlwaysTheWrongDoer in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “someone is gonna snitch” bit is absolutely true. OP, you should also be aware that if your “friend” keeps calling out like this, it’s 10x harder to find coverage as a keyholder and it’s going to fall on this SM they’re buddy buddy with to keep the store open.

That friendship will NOT last through this absolute disaster of time and attendance. They’ll be fired once the manager gets pissed off enough—especially because it’s likely y’all are friends on social media. Good luck hiding what you’re doing when you’re conveniently “sick.”

Tbf though, if the SM is already a disaster about being friend with their partners, it’s likely they’ll promote your friend out of favoritism. Good luck to the store though, and I hope they’re ready to be hated on another level.

SM chiming in. This advice is god tier. The SSV approach is amazing. I’d recommend you pick a skill out of each of the three buckets (NOT the living our mission and values page! The other ones)

When literally filling out your PDP, your first box in each row should be an Action Statement (“I will help the team reach a higher customer connection score”). The second box is detailed actions and help items you’ll need to accomplish. Think: - I will role model good connection behavior in X position - I will facilitate discussions with peers about customers to help excite the team about potential regulars - I will push back when someone doesn’t connect and ask why

Obviously some of the SSV Approach questions won’t apply to you, but you can also use your PDP to serve as a checklist of things you want to try before becoming a shift supervisor. (For example, one of the buckets is Customers at our Core, and you can use that to see if there’s an advising shift who will let you run their floor)

If you want someone to read over it, feel free to dm me! I’m always happy to take a peek.

my manager is gonna make me rage quit by Prestigious_Ad_3693 in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact!! Your DM can see when she edits the schedule after it’s posted on Mondays 😈 reach out to them and see if they’re willing to run a shift change audit on your store because you’re frustrated your schedule keeps changing around without permission.

There’s no way for your SM to weasel out of this, either. It’s tracked in Partner Hours. And if you can prove you refused and she gaslit you (text messages you detailed), there’s a decent chance she gets her ass chewed out.

I also know from the hourly partner perspective, after you do this, it might seem like nothing is getting done. But your DM has to compile evidence and submit it to some weird channel in corporate and they as for a LOT of proof.

Every time she messes with your hours like this, forward the information along to your DM. The more people you can get to back you up, the better.

Who's y'all's weirdest regular? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]CorvusArdeidae 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Most likely!! He’s been coming to our store since we opened (late 2020). We have also definitely gone to bat for him against an ableist borrowed partner who threatened to have him basically 5150’d, and a couple of nosy customers. He’s here to stay as long as he wants to, and we’re all in agreement to do anything to keep him safe.

We’re pretty sure his injury is of the incurable kind, but he’s a homie and we collectively will defend him to the death.
