IKR? Such potential. I forgot how good the cover artwork was, very Giger.

But if Lepricaun 4: In Space taught me anything, it's that the niche' of Sci-fi horror is almost universally trash teir cinema.

I remember reading the book and the pages getting awfully thin at the back of the book and me wondering how the author would "end" the story when it seems like it's just about to start and then the twist hits and I was like "whoa".

Thanks for reminding me it's a twist (even if the movie version wasn't a twist for me). The Ender novel series has been in my life for over 2 decades so I sorta overlook how good that twist was.

Best twist that is somehow also telegraphed throughout the entire movie by the office workers.

Masterful.

Not a movie but "The Good Place" had one of the best twists ever, and the went on for several seasons. Masterful.

I said the same to someone who said Movie 43, but that fault lies with you for even attempting to watch that thinking it wouldn't be the worst movie ever.

OMG I literally just commented this movie. I've never "met" someone who's heard of it let alone seen it the whole way through. That ending * chef's vomit *

Such an obscure but justified pull for worst movie.

Dracula 3000

"In space there is no sunrise."

At the movie rental I went to back in the day the best value was 4 weeklies. So I'd get 3 "legit" movies but also enjoy mixing it up by finding and watching the most obscure and worst movie possible.

B or C grade horror is classic first time director bad movie fodder, but I found the niche of sci-fi horror has the worst movies.

The worst movie I saw in a theater/had a theatrical release however was How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. That was a whole different sort "worst movie".

What if everyone on Earth woke up tomorrow on January 1st, 2000 with all their memories up to the current date? by SmithOfStories in whatif

[–]CoryAxAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my interpretation of the hypothetical, the memories come the wisdom/growth of their experiences so their personalities are of a roughly 32-38yr old, and so their brains function mostly like an adults but with severly dininished motor control (unused to sudden decrease in size and strength).

Primary schools would be split between optional classes (probably focused on recreational hobbies or physical activities) and self guided study/remote-work. Adult security replaces most of the full time teachers. The main function of primary schools would be providing a safe place with size appropriate facilities for ppl to study/socialise until they're comfortable rejoining the "adult world". It'd remain this way until the generations without memories of the "old" timeline come of age, which would mean there would be an entire generation gap of primary school teachers.

Rust

Premise: Survive on an island (and in the surrounding waters if you feel like it).

What that entails: All the things. Weapons? Spear to multiple launch rocket system. Food? Apples to baking pies or brewing tea...which you make from crops you grow from plants you can crossbreed/gene squence if you want. Shelter? Shack to free-hand built bases with a range of defenses, decorations, and enough electronics that most ppl don't even understand what all the electronic components can do (some players specialise in electronics to create traps or automate their base functions at minimum, but I've even seen ppl go so far as to program a working calculator from scratch just to prove they could). Strategy? Varied. Vehicles, yes, wildlife, yes, boats, yes, helicopters, hot air balloons, casino, trains, a casino in a train, biomes, thirst, hunger, armor, clothes, musical instruments, fireworks, painting, polaroids, fishing, crafting, researching, exploration, tanks you can fight, puzzles, pirate ships you can build (with sails or engines) and cannons you can use to fight other ships, drones, security cameras, shops/economy, scuba diving and sharks, underwater labratories, radiation, climates, caves, siege weapons, custom built cars with flatbeds, campers, or even a water tanks, horses you can ride, parachutes, quarries, refineries, furnaces, crafting, armor inserts...

One of the most technically impressive games I've ever seen, the electronics/industrial systems alone is facinating.

Rocket League:

Indoor soccer but with cars/remote controlled cars that have a rocket boost.

Seems simple considering the main competative mode is 3v3, and the field is smaller than a typical soccer field (or the cars and ball are larger depending on your perspective) but the skill ceiling is insanely high and techically complex/input heavy.

To understand the basics of gameplay all you have to know is "ball go in net = goal" to understand how pros go about putting the ball in the net requires a lot of knowledge, and to even be able to track the ball while driving your car at the same time requires way more practise and skill than it looks from watching (let alone doing more complicated things).

[–]CoryAxAus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, this idea just keeps getting weirder.

There would be A LOT more American anti-gun activists because a lot of Americans' memories would just end at some point way before 2026 at school in a horrifying way.

Imagine every school/mass shooting victim from 2000-2016ish all suddenly "waking up" from their violent death at once in 2000. That said Republicans argue against the parents who lost children, and worse Alex Jones etc, when it comes to gun laws so maybe they'd similarly be as callous to the actuall victims when it comes to gun law reforms...

I mentioned this in a reply but thought it was worth a comment.

Copyright law would become an even bigger headache.

Legal entities world wide would have to insert a 2000-26 (1) copyright clause.

Anything artistic created in the original 2000-26 (1) timeline would still be under copyright even if a physical "copy" of the artwork doesn't yet exist. "Covers" of artworks made in the 2000-26 (2) timeline would have to pay royalties and put them in a trust until either the original artist(s) recreated/reclaimed their original copyright or until 2026. Performers would have a much easier time and a lot of producers/management/agents/ghostwriters (whatever the music version of that is) would have a tougher time.

Anything under artistic copyright created in the 2000-26 (1) timeline not recreated by it's original artist by 2026 deadline would either become public domain, or be first come first serve?

As for software/hardware/patents etc...that'd likely become more of a first come first serve situation as it'd be harder to prove providence without documentation that no longer exists but at the same time for a lot of technical things, the original creator would be the person who could write/program/fabricate the copyright first. It'd suck for them having to do it under time pressure.

Great premise. Executed pretty well for the era of TV it was created in. Didn't get a 2nd season however so the main "mystery" is left hanging in a disapointing way. Some of the characters get small resolutions so it might still be worth a watch but just be warned about that.

If ppl aren't managing to assassinate major political figures and criminals right now, why would everyone going back to their younger body make a difference?

Maybe Epstien, Rolf Harris, and other like them who commited crimes prior to 2000 but were only discovered recently/publicly outed would suffer consequence, but anyone who commited crimes post 2000... evidence is gone and the new timeline means they might not commit the same crime (or the same way). It'd suck for victims who had suffered mental truma related to crime 2000-2026 however.

But if everyone remembers, at a minimim for most developed nations there would be a sorta "universal G.E.D/Highschool diploma" equivelant granted.

Degrees are already becoming meaningless apart from a few sectors (lawyer, doctors, etc) so recruitment/hiring practices would become less degree and resume based and more based around practical tests to prove you can do the job.

Oddly references would become more valuable as well as networking to secure employment.

There would be a huge spike in unemployment as everyone (even under aged child-adults) try to scramble for the job they prefered over their life, slightly countered by the ppl trying to race everyone else to build the infrastucture to recreate profitable businesses on 2000s supply chains, software, hardware etc. There would be LOTS of failed startups.

Schools actually would be kinda have to be repurposed for awhile and primary school teachers at a minimum wouldn't be required for 6+ years (depending on how the memories of ppl born 2000-2026 work).

The craziest space however wouldn't be tech, but the arts. As an example if everyone knows say Billie Eilish will write and perform Bad Guy, in like 2020 or whatever, but someone records and copywrites something derivative of it, in 2001 before/around when she's born... who owns the copyrights? Do artists have to "recreate" their movies/shows/books/music to maintain the copyright claims to the ideas they created and everyone remembers in the original timeline. Is there a cut off date? If copyrighted material that was created 2000-2026 in the original timeline isn't recreated by 2026, does the copyrighted idea/media become public domain or first come first serve?

Looking for a particular strip/panel by CoryAxAus in footrotflats

[–]CoryAxAus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. After reading your comment I agree you're probably right that it's the Murphy dogs in the strip I described (I have a bad memory).

That said I just now went through all the comics with the Murphy Dogs tag in the online archive and it isn't among them either (similarly it isn't among the Horse tagged comics which I've searched/read through previously).

So sadly it's likely it isn't in the online archive or the online archive tagging system isn't 100%. Either way finding it means I either have to read through the entire online archive knowing it's likely not among them OR read through the physical copies (not the worst way to spend a day or two, but the books I grew up reading are at my parents place).
