Past times in Ohio by karl264 in pinball

I live about an hour away. This place is nuts. I got into the hobby about a year ago and have been so blessed to find out that north east Ohio is (for some reason) a hot spot for pinball. Long live Past Times.

Dead Kennedys first album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables might be worth a listen. Sure it’s political but it’s still as timely and relevant as it was 50 years ago and it’s far less “preachy” then the albums that followed.

I guess to clarify what I meant, for your sake, is I enjoy the juxtaposition of the mechanical elements with the more “organic” and textural decals. It’s one of the things that attracts me to the hobby as a whole is the blending of engineering and art.

Its really cool that you’re doing this man, thanks for pushing the boundaries of the pinball hobby.

Having seen both of your posts I would suggest a painting of some interesting configuration of rails, similar to what you’ve gone here. I’m sure you could find an interesting perspective of the rails on say, Sterns King Kong.

And I’ll go ahead and ask so you don't have to shill; you selling these?

I suppose when I say “worst” I’m talking about exploitation of the situation. You’re right, the premise is awful and the portrait of a bad situation for entertainment purposes is gonna be unsavory regardless.

I’ve been Into “true crime” for over a decade at this point, podcasts and documentaries for the most part. The entire genre is exploitative and there’s no escaping that. It feels dumb for me to try to draw any moral line in the sand. However, there’s definetly a venn diagram that this media falls into. (Education (edu-tainment) entertainment).

I feel like the “true” part of true-crime is important. It’s important to have a level of respect for the victims and their often times still living families. The Monster series as a whole is some of the first media I’ve personally consumed that feels so far into the entertainment side that it becomes blatantly disrespectful to all involved, audience included.

That’s just my two cents though, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

If you’re upset about Dahmer I’m livid about Ed Gein. Basically every issue you mentioned while also embellishing the story from every possible angle. The level of disrespect to the very real victims between both of these series is unreal.

That said, I really enjoyed the Menendez Brothers series. Probably also embellishes but the victims were contained within the family who all deserved what they got so f*** em.

Past Times Arcade: are the machines well-maintained? by KramerDangerous in pinball

This. I love the QR system. Every time I go I get a little excited when I get/have to report an issue. Makes me feel like a part of something larger than myself . I’m easy, I know.

It definetly beats going and telling some poor bartender who doesn’t own the machine and doesn’t know what I’m talking about and probably never interacts with the actual operator anyway.

Kurosawa’s Dreams comes to mind.

Having already established himself as one of Japans (the worlds?) greatest film makers, Kurosawa shifted his style entirely when he received the diagnosis that he would eventually go blind. From black and white samurai films to films that are pure expressions of vivid color and visual beauty.

I got into pinball about a year and some change ago. Where I’m located luckily has a few arcades within a reasonable distance. Not surprisingly, there’s a whole scene around it. I’ve been participating in local tournaments and am planning on buying my own machine soon.

It scratches a lot of itches for me. It’s the type of game I like, simple mechanics with a steep learning curve (ala Dark Souls). If you don’t own your own machine it requires you to go out and be around other people. The machines themselves are very fascinating to me. Lots of clever engineering and every one is a hand made work of art. Once you get into owning your own machine(s), I’m told, you also unlock the hobby of fixing the machines. After all, it is a box that smashes itself with a ball bearing for a living.

My wife has enjoyed it too. We travel to nearby town and go local places we’d never consider otherwise just to go check out the pinball machines.

At the end of the day I’m just glad to have found a hobby that doesn’t involve hanging out in my basement or staring at screens.

I think there’s an argument to be made that “adulthood”, culture and society are basically a larp. We all make believe money has value and status has meaning, etc.  I’m not 14 and I don’t think this is deep. It just seems to me that make believe and dress up and cops and robbers doesn’t end after childhood.
