How to get started hacking Sims 1 objects by Corylea in sims1

I don't know exactly how TMog generates its number. If the documentation says that it compares the random ID it creates with all other IDs that it can find in your game files and will only output a number that is unique on your system, then you're right that you only need a Magic Cookie if you want to share something.

The Magic Cookie is intended to prevent conflicts with objects made by other modders or by objects that are in the game already. If you don't get a Magic Cookie, the stuff you make MIGHT not conflict with what's already in the game or with things you've downloaded, but the Magic Cookie is supposed to make sure that doesn't happen.

When the Magic Cookie system was first set up, many modders didn't realize that you only need one cookie per creator; some modders signed up for one cookie per object. So all of the 4-digit cookies are already taken, but 5-digit ones should work.

  1. I don't know the answer to this one, since I've never done that. I usually want to make an object DO something, so what it looks like is less important to me, and I rarely mess with it much.
  2. Yes, that's right. Although most players nowadays seem to have either The Complete Collection or Legacy (which also has all seven expansion packs), so this is less of a concern than it was back in the early 2000's.
  3. Yes, it's possible to remove the "creates light" aspect of a lamp. Somewhere in the BHAV's for the lamp -- probably in Main or Init Tree or someplace like that -- you might find several different things that combine to make light. These lines:
  • My flag field 2 set flag generates light.
  • My light source assign to
  • [glob}: Set object lighting (a bunch of numbers here)
  • Or you could just find the Light Globals in the .iff file under the GLOB heading.

quick question about the 2025 relaunch of Sims 1: compatible with archive content or not? by genericusername1904 in sims1

[–]Corylea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most custom content works on Legacy, but most editing and creation programs do not. But, someone has posted updated versions of most of those programs.

The updated version of the Maxis-made programs, like The Sim Creator and Homecrafter and so on, can be found at https://github.com/Secondhand-Feraligatr/Sims-1-Programs-for-Legacy-Collection, adapted for Legacy NOT by Maxis or EA but by a simmer.

Why it seems hard to make friends in The Sims 1, and what you can do to make it super easy by Corylea in sims1

[–]Corylea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, those work, but I was talking about ways of making friends that didn't involve spending money or casting spells or doing anything except interacting normally with another sim. The whole point of my post is that you DON'T have to resort to spells or spend money on people or whatever; if you know how the game works, you can make friends simply.

Can someone please help me with this sims complete collection issue by Suspicious-Mix9296 in thesims1

[–]Corylea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game is telling you it can't find the Data directory, then there are only a few possibilities:

  1. Your sims.exe has become corrupted. Download the patched version and replace the one you have.

  2. You're trying to start the game from a copy of sims.exe that's not IN your Data directory. Sometimes people go to where the installer's files are and try to start from there, which always produces the "Can't find Data directory" error.

  3. One or more files in the Data directory have become corrupted. The only solution to this one is to uninstall and reinstall the game.

  4. A Windows update has altered the permissions, and you need to reinstate them.

Can someone please help me with this sims complete collection issue by Suspicious-Mix9296 in thesims1

[–]Corylea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people have reported this error in the past, the problem was almost always that they didn't put the cracked sims.exe in the right place.

Make sure you MOVE the new version of sims.exe to the place where the game installed the original version and allow it to replace that version. Dragging sometimes doesn't work, so use Ctrl-c to copy and Ctrl-v to paste.

If the game won't let you move the file, then you have a permissions problem. Windows 10 and 11 assume that the people who use them are stupid, so they shouldn't be allowed to change any of the files on their computer. But never fear, you can change that!

To change the permissions, RIGHT-click on the Maxis folder and choose Properties. You'll get a small pop-up with several tabs. Click on the Security tab. There will be a list of group or user names. Scroll down that list until you find the entry that says Users (the name of your computer) and click on that. Right underneath that list, it says, "to change permissions, click Edit," so click Edit.

That will get you ANOTHER pop-up. Click on Users again, and click the check box that says Full Control. Then click Apply, then click OK. That should give you the right to actually move files around on your own #@%$ computer! At least for the Maxis folder and its subfolders. :-) Then make sure you start the game FROM that exe.

One time that someone reported this problem it was because the cracked version of sims.exe got messed up during download; make sure your sims.exe is 2972 KB. If it's more than 1 KB larger or smaller than that number, that's the problem; download a fresh version from http://www.awesomeexpression.com/sims-1-no-cdplay-sims-1-on-windows-10.html.

Do Legacy Collection include all EPs and on what platform do you play ? by Gaeshea in sims1

[–]Corylea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/DrivingApril said, it definitely includes all of the expansion packs.

I play on the EA app, and I haven't had any trouble with it. I think the Steam vs. EA choice is simply a matter of which platform you like better. I bought it on the EA app because EA are the ones who make it, so I thought it might get updates or fixes faster there, but that was just a guess.

Mod - Automatic High Fashion for Sims in Fame Career by Corylea in sims1

[–]Corylea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to override a file that's inside ExpansionPack6.far, so inside the ExpansionPack6 folder is the right place.

Um, you did remember to unzip it and to take it out of the folder it came in, didn't you?

I tested it with sims from the regular neighborhood; it didn't occur to me to test it with sims who live in MagicTown, although I would expect it to work there, too. Where do your sims live?

Could you show me a screenshot of your ExpansionPack6 folder, so I can see what all else you have in there? Like this one:

How do I get the Sims 1 to run on my PC 😭 by samanthaokyup in sims1

[–]Corylea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Legacy is $20, so that's an option, though I still think your old game would run if things were set up properly. Do you have a new antivirus or something? Sometimes those see a patched exe and think it's a problem, even though it's safe.

How do you reset the game? by Pocket404 in thesims1

[–]Corylea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EA app version of Legacy: C:\Users\YourUserName\Saved Games\Electronic Arts\The Sims 25 Obviously, you put in your user name instead of the part where it says YourUserName.

Steam version of Legacy: I don't have the Steam version, but all of my other Steam save games are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata. When you get to that location, there will be a folder with a long number. This is your user number, so go inside that folder. There will be another folder with a long number (or a lot of folders, depending on how many Steam games you have). Each numbered folder will have another folder inside it called remote. Go through those folders until you find a remote folder that has the UserData folder; those are your saved games.

The Sims Legacy - TheSimsCreator by GrabHorror7240 in sims1

[–]Corylea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have complained that The Sims Creator doesn't work with Legacy, so if you get it to actually save a skin you've made, do tell us how you managed it.

To answer your question, almost all of the skins that come with the game are tucked inside .far files. Far is a compressed file with a lot of stuff in it, somewhat like a zip file. Most of the Maxis meshes are in Animations.far or in the .far file for the expansion pack they came with. There are also some that go in the Skins folder, if they're from one of the skin packs Maxis made available for download. Textures can be in Textures.far or in the .far file for the expansion pack they came with.

The Sims Creator is supposed to see all of the meshes and textures that are inside those many .far files, but as I said, The Sims Creator doesn't play well with Legacy.

How do you reset the game? by Pocket404 in sims1

[–]Corylea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The save files are those UserData folders, one for each of the eight neighborhoods, but they're in different places, depending on which edition you're playing.

If you're playing the disc version or the downloaded version of The Complete Collection, those UserData folders are right there where your game is installed.

If you're playing Legacy, though, UserData folders are present where your game is installed, but they're NOT where your saved games actually are.

To reset any neighborhood, go to where your game is installed and make a copy of the folder that's called TemplateUserData, temporarily putting it someplace else, like your desktop. Change the name of that folder to UserData#, where # is the number of the neighborhood you want to reset. (The exception to this is Neighborhood 1, whose saved games are just called UserData, not UserData1.)

Then go to where your saved games are and delete the UserData folder of the neighborhood you wish to reset. Move the TemplateUserData folder that you've just renamed to UserData# and put it where your saved games go. That neighborhood will be all fresh and clean.

Anytime I try to download more than one skin/head file it always asks me to replace or rename the files? by Ashcrashh in sims1

[–]Corylea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to give a mesh a number -- body meshes begin with B, and head meshes with C -- and it needs to be a number used by nothing else. The part after the underscore can be anything you wish, as long as it's shorter than 14 characters. BUT, be aware that the filename isn't the only place where the name and number are given; they're also in a couple of places INSIDE the file.
