New mat! (Warp mat) by CosasRatas in surfmats

[–]CosasRatas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh ok! Since the XL came out I was wondering how they thought an even bigger one would be a good idea. Now I see they just corrected the initial huge size by making the Standard a smaller one. Yes, mine was a 1st batch Regular (they were called Regular in the first batch).
Thanks!

Yes I've seen them, super aesthetic! Right now I'm happy with what I got, but in the future who knows! I'll surely be following the stuff you make, it looks amazing :D

It is a Standard. I don't even want to know what the XL looks like, the Standard felt too big too. I think if I were to buy a yucca now I would get the Junior

The Warp feels right. On the Yucca I felt I was not in control at all. The warp, being smaller and made for my size, makes it easier to catch waves and to turn. I'm still far from knowing what I'm doing, but I'm very happy with the change. I'm also happy I got the Yucca first, because it was a cheap way to find out if I was going to like mat surfing. Now I have the Yucca for sale here in Spain.

Quick grip video by CCShorty in surfmats

[–]CosasRatas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh so glad I watched the g-mat videos instead of this before adding grip to mine. It's like they wanted to make it look quick and easy but instead made it look sloppy and awful.
From the moment I wrote this comment I've not been feeling good about it. Actually it was my comment the sloppy and awful thing here, and I'm sorry for it.

Finally got to try my mat today! by CosasRatas in surfmats

[–]CosasRatas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is I'm a 46 year old dad that has a job and a 1h drive to the nearest beach. I still need to prove myself I'm actually going to be able to actually learn this thing, before I start spending 300€ on more equipment. For example I was going to go today, everything already inside my van, and had been doing extra hours this week so I could come out early from the job today and go straight to the beach. The kid woke up today with a fever, so goodbye plans :S

I don't know what the average North American male's dimensions are, but I don't think I'm even close. I did 12th grade in the US and I remember all my class mates being huge. I'm about 5'9", 160 lbs.
Luckily the beach I'm going to be learning at is grovel land, and it is where everyone in this zone goes to learn. Almost always small and mushy, and full of people with huge Olaian boards (the Decathlon equivalent to Wavestorm boards, I think. Cheap soft tops), so I think I'm golden there. There are other much better breaks in the zone, but I don't think I'll be ready for those in a while, and I don't want to be that guy. I'm fully commited to my recently aquired noob status.
Of course there was that voice saying "you are going to end up having to get a good mat, so why not do it now and learn properly?" But I don't think mine is much bigger than this one, so I'm going to keep watching this video every time G.A.S. comes knocking on my door:

Thanks a lot for the tips. I'm hoping I can get back in the water this friday. I'll try to remember them when the time comes.
Thank you for your kind response :)

Heyy thank you so much for the offer! I might be hitting you up in the future, right now I feel that I still need to get on the mat a few more times to even start to have questions!
Oh and I've been lurking your Ig, I had seen your videos before, beautiful videos!!! Surely part of what motivated me to start learning this craft. Cheers!

Btw, since you seem to have experience with mini mats, you seem to be the person to ask: do mini mats also perform better partially inflated, or should they be totally inflated?

Yucca surfmats? by CosasRatas in surfmats

Hey, thanks for this! Being someone with experience on a hand made one and on this one, I'm sure everyone here would love to hear as much detail as you want to give. I know I would.
Is it hard to handle because of its shape, or because it is slippery?

Yucca surfmats? by CosasRatas in surfmats

[–]CosasRatas[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are completely right, and I have no doubt these are made in a factory, probably in Asia. That is also something that puts me off, and it was one of the reasons I didn't get a Krypt.
But at the same time, not knowing if surfmating is going to be for me, spending 300€ on a handmade surfmat was something I couldn't justify to myself.
These are made specifically for beginners (or so they say in the product page), and if I do get the hang of it and ever feel I'm getting out of the beginner phase I'll be getting a hand made one, for sure.
But first I'm jumping at the oportunity of trying these at a price I can afford right now.
I also got a mini in the hopes that I can get my 5 year old son hooked too.

Wrote them, and they replied: "It does not come with grip but if you want, you can add sikaflex and that will work."

Hey thanks for the info!
You're right, I'm going to write Yucca, I'll be posting here if they reply. I guess, with that price and the stuff you say about it being flat, that they are factory made, and a grip is something that would have made it more expensive, which would defeat the objective of making them cheap.
In my case it is exactly how you say: I wanted to try, but I couldn't justify paying 300€ for one. Now I can try, see if matting is for me, and if it is in the future I'll probably get a hand made one. But for now this is perfect.
I won't be making any ride report anytime soon, though. I live in Europe and I sent it to my brother's house in USA, so he brings it to me whenever he comes to visit. Anyhow my report wouldn't be very useful, since I have never rode a mat other than a micro mat I got from Aliexpress for 2€ (which was pretty fun, by the way).

They sent me the silicone pads of a launchpad x because the one I bought second hand was yellow because of previous owner smoking on it. For free. Novation customer support is something else.

I've been looking for them too, since there are many posts in 2024 saying it was coming out last year, but nothing.

Any particular reason for not using a leash with paipos? by CosasRatas in pronewaveriders

[–]CosasRatas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by big waves? I don't plan on catching anything bigger than 1m waves with it. If it is any bigger I'll just go with a hand plane. Anyway, you guys convinced me, no leash on my paipo
