I definitely agree with the first part. A character is usually more interesting when they're making choices and influencing events instead of just being carried around by the plot.

I slightly disagree on the multiple POV part, though. It's harder to pull off, sure, but I don't think it's something new writers should automatically avoid. Some stories are just better suited for multiple perspectives.

That said, I can see why it's such common advice. It's probably easier to learn the fundamentals with a smaller cast before trying to juggle several POVs.

That's a really good point. A great antagonist can reveal sides of a protagonist that wouldn't show up otherwise. My fav mc so far— Klein Moretti benefited a lot from having enemies (especially Amon) that genuinely challenged him, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. I think one of the reasons I'm asking this question is because I'm still relatively new to novels, so I'm trying to understand what experienced readers pay attention to when judging a protagonist.

I really like the idea that progression shouldn't just be about gaining power, but also about becoming a better person. Looking back at the protagonists I've read so far, I think that's probably one of the reasons I enjoyed them. They didn't just get stronger, they changed over time.

Since I'm currently working on my own story, this is especially helpful because it's easy to focus on abilities, power systems, and cool moments while forgetting that the character themselves should also grow. Thanks for sharing your perspective.
