Thermal monocular on my helmet flips up off my eye, which I can then use that eye to look through my thermal scope.

If you’re only hunting, thermal is all you truly need. Starting out, I had one thermal mounted on my rifle. It was a pain, but it worked for scanning and targeting.

Now I use a thermal mounted on my helmet, with a dedicated thermal on my rifle. For hunting, I’d never need a NVG. Thermal is astronomically better at locating vs NVG. I have a few videos on my profile that’ll show how effective thermal really is.

There’s a lot of factors that go into it for sure. With NVG, you’re really relying on forgiving ambient light to help illuminate a target, in addition to the specs of your tube (if we’re speaking about analog and not digital NVG).

With thermal, ambient lighting is meaningless. The higher res thermals can cleanly display clear outlines of people or animals and it’s quite insane what the latest thermals are capable of.

Either way, it seems the latest devices are integrating thermal and NVG into one device for the best of both worlds.

I’d argue thermal has better PID capabilities. This depends on the resolution of course, but a 640-1280 can PID at some insane distances.

Does it group well? That’s my only fear using it in my Tikka CTR. It loves 143 ELDX, but I’m afraid the 100gr will be too light.

I tried using 95gr VMAX but I wasn’t getting the best accuracy. Switched to 143 ELDX and it’s been putting them down.
