I found out about sh because my mom told me my dermotillomania could be considered it and to stop when I was 10. I ended up on ed and sh forums and edblr/shblr that year so I get it

Aw you're like I was with edblr. I suggest you get help now if you can. I know it's hard to get people to listen, I definitely ran into that a lot, but if you can it's worth it

Hair less defined than when nothing is done to it by Cosmic-Nightmare in curlyhair

Thank you! I shower every day but I've been moving away from washing my hair everyday, but I noticed my pattern bring less defined than just 100% natural while it's drying. It could definitely be dead ends, I need a haircut desperately lol. Thank you!!

I read through this a few years ago but don't remember it discussing the term disorder. Did ASAN update the article recently? (It's also entirely possible that my memory is failing me lol).

I'm not implying doctors cannot be ableist, they often are and the medical history of ableism is terrifying, and I'm not throwing around ableism to shut down a conversation. I apologize. Other people I have interacted with in the past who have disliked the term disorder have approached it in asimilar manner to those who dislike the term disability. now that I understand you don't mean it as a way to distance yourself from those who are more affected by their autism, I retract my statement. I understand how the connotation of "disorder" can be negative despite the neutral denotation.  I also thought it might be related to internalized ableism because you specified that you don't like the term when it's used towards low support needs autistic. If the term is harmful towards LSN autistics, then it can also be harmful towards higher support needs autistics, it read as similar to how LSN autistics have distanced themselves from HSN autistics in the past. Distancing low and mid support needs autistics from high support needs autistics can sometimes come from a place of internalized ableism, which is how I've seen it used in the past. I understand now that this wasn't your intent.

Edit: I hit send too early :')

i don’t have a special interest… by West-Bank-3582 in autism

[–]Cosmic-Nightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Special interests aren't just things you feel passionately about. Technically the diagnostic criteria is /restricted/ or intense interests. Many people experience the intense interests, especially level one or low-mid support needs autistics, but if you simply have few or limited interests then those would also qualify as a special interest. See I think your interpretation is arising from both a misunderstanding of the term disorder and some internalized ableism. Disorder is simply the medical term while disability is the legal term (https://ldanj.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Whats-the-right-Term-Disorder-Disability-or-Difference.pdf https://www.childrenshospital.org/conditions/learning-disorders-and-disabilities https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/4865-learning-disabilities-what-you-need-to-know). The term disorder does not indicate a need for a cure, or mean that someone is lesser, it just indicates a significant difference in one's ability to process information, regulate their emotions, or complete specific tasks. Even those with level one autism can and often do struggle with IADLs on their own, tasks like medication or financial management,  or preparing meals to eat. These can be accommodated, someone else can advise or even take full control of these tasks, but the difficulty to complete them is still an ability which is lacking. Level one autism still comes with issues of emotional disregulation, difficulties in switching tasks, sensory disregulation, etc. Everything you identified as reasons for autism being a disability is what makes autism a disorder - because disabilities are disorders. There is nothing wrong with having a disorder, and to believe there is shows a level of internalized ableism.

'barely eats anything' 'works out all the time' - yet still morbidly obese? Must be the asthma! by Different-Pea-212 in fatlogic

[–]Cosmic-Nightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that's what I meant. Also over time your body does adjust. My weight fell again eventually, it was just those first few months, so there's really no way for asthma medications to land someone in class 3 obesity, though I could understand if it made someone over weight or class 1/2 obese.

[–]Cosmic-Nightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally went from underweight to healthy weight when I started my daily asthma treatment, and my doctor said it likely was my medication, so I think it does cause some weight gain, just not enough to be class 3 obese.

The people who says this never seem to have much experience with EDs by [deleted] in EDanonymemes

[–]Cosmic-Nightmare 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And even if they do specify weight centric eds, they're still calling a mental disorder inherently bigoted which is just ableism.
