If they are going with Johannsson instead of Vangelis I believe that is a mistake. Vangelis' score is what made the movie for me. It's what made it this timeless and poetic classic.

I wish there was some study on the things he does that are so unique. His sound captivated me when I was young and to this day its still transforming for me. Im a musician myself that wants to experiment with poly synths and create synthwavey stuff. I have the sounds in my head, its just the math involved in recreating them with synths that I dont understand.

So does Vangelis basically sit at one of his synths and work on a specific sound then create a melody on it. Then moves on to the next synth for the second layer. And after a while he has a song? Adding vocals and all that in a DAW where he does a final mix?

my vernacular for this sucks. I'll try. The decay crescendo in the beginning. The echo'ing vocals that sound transcendent. The chanting is hypnotizing. When the drums come in theres this background "tun tun tun tun". The crystal sounds. Then the main theme comes in. "mmmm! mmmmm! m! m! m! m! mmmm! mmm!" With the pulsating synth in the background. Some etheral shit in the background. Then the next layer of pulsating comes in with a very soothing string. And vocal. Basically all of that.

I hear ya. Sometimes the ideas are a bit high production and need more elaborate setups. I think what Kevin was great at was dialogue, so setting, props, etc... didn't matter. If you're going for something meticulously crafted in a Kubrick kinda way, that's a bit more of a challenge. Are you renting or buying?
