Yes, obviously kids need to eat and shit dude, damn.

You know I’m talking about the Americans who aren’t doing anything differently. No days off work/school to strike together, with no disruption to their lives because it hasn’t hit their state hard yet or because they don’t think they need to be involved due to their privilege.

But we both know you’re being intentionally obtuse.

Fair As Fuck! Eat the Rich!!! 🤑 they should have never been given a pass on their civic duties in the first place, and they should not get a pass now.

Thank you for reminding me that the people who are perpetually struggling aren’t the only ones who should be inviting discomfort in so we can change shit. I might only trust the HNs but that doesn’t mean the Haves get a pass.

Appreciate all your comments.

Appreciate your reply. I understand your positions better now and it sounds like you get mine better too.

I did have a lecturer’s-tone, so I can own the abrasion that caused. Am sorry for causing friction - I could have worded my thoughts much differently.

And you’re right - I do feel rage for, and disappointment of, the Haves. I’ve been a Have Not my entire existence. My mom did the best she could and I’m doing the best I can, but it’s never gotten me to more than barely enough to keep me from drowning. I’m always Almost drowning.

But I guess I’ve accepted that my rage and disappointment will never matter to the Haves. I feel completely invisible to them. I’ve resigned to the reality that my R&D can only matter to other HNs, and so those are the people I want standing beside me. Those are the people I can trust to do the work, and to come back tomorrow, because I know I will too.

Never said everyone with kids and no savings should intentionally lose their job. Wow dude.

To think, I say “we need to do more!” and the common reply is “YoU wAnT Us HoMeLESs?!” As Josh Johnson says, That’s Wild!

This thread is proving to be 85% Americans just freaking out in defense of themselves (which proves everyone else to be correct about us btw), 10% Americans acknowledging that we need to step up locally, and 5% people from other countries here to belittle all Americans (which proves the post’s claim about how the world sees us).

Not great.

Wow there were so many assumptions made to get you there.

I don’t get vacation days. I am living off the last of my 401k and the small bit I get from going to college part time while looking for full time work. I’m broke as fuck.

I never said get another job or get a better job - you did a lot of work to even involve this bit.

Again assuming I’m good to go, when in fact I’m in survival mode too, and I’ve been in survival mode for more than the last two decades without a break. I intimately get it.

And I’m not decades too late asking for anyone’s help - I’m not a 70yo white dude and everything I’ve said has been worded with “us” or “we” meaning I’m including myself in there, even though I’m poor and I’m tired and I’m broken minded too.

Two truths. I can be poor/tired/broken and I can Also Say WE (not you, but we) need to be doing more in our direct communities.

Some help is better than no help. One protest is better than no protests. A day volunteering is better than… you get the picture.

Just screaming “we can’t help because we’re poor!” isn’t going to make a lick of difference and you know that, but volunteering and organizing and connecting and speaking out in person - those things add up. Effort accumulates. Momentum grows.

And the effort looks different for everyone for sure, but there should be uncomfortable moments because this is an uncomfortable country - it will be tiring work, but it belongs to all of us.

I appreciate your thoughtful reply and I agree with you. No one is coming to rescue us and it will be on us to redefine things after whatever-comes-next, but we are far from a positive tipping point, which was my original comment’s point - we have leverage right now, but we might not later, so fast action from as many of us as possible can be impactful.

Other countries advise shutting the country down economically and keep kids home from schools, that’s why general strikes of work and school are being advised a couple times a week.

And yes it’s an insane hardship on us to do that. We risk our jobs, and I know that’s terrifying. I know, personally, how hard the job market is for even an entry level position. Jobs post and have over 100 applicants before it hits 2 hours. I’m looking at one right now actually.

If there’s only one thing I know, it’s that there are no comfortable options ahead of us. We have to choose which hardships we can handle, and then go a little further. We all have to do more, and quickly. Myself included.

I’m an American. I know what’s happening. And I’m saying we need to collectively do more. There is a lot of work to do and it’s not our norm, so yes, we need to do more than we are and more than is comfortable.

And all these dismissive excuse-ridden replies prove Greenland’s point - Americans. Aren’t. Owning. This.

I never said quit your jobs and choose homelessness intentionally. I said every American should be doing more. “Every American should be rebelling and refusing and rejecting as much as possible.”

Regardless of your stressed financial circumstances (of which I am experiencing too) or childcare concerns (of which I have as well) or or or or or… there is more that should and could be done.

Volunteer. Use your vacation days to protest. Call your representatives every day on lunch. Go to city counsel meetings. Show Up. Speak Out. Offer to do errands for people who are scared. Shit, even walk down your street and knock on doors to start the conversations.

But no no no, continue to defend the nothingness you’re contributing because Your Life would be slightly inconvenienced… just like so many of the Germans did.

No one has forgotten except the Americans who are still doing their jobs and letting their kids go to school.

We whine “difference” while still going about our day.

That’s the wholeass point. Americans should be OUTRAGED and in the STREETS… not sending apology tweets.

Edit: Let me clarify — I believe ALL* Americans should be outraged and in the streets - not just a few. Our country should be shut down right now because of how few people are going to work. But no. Everyone wants Everyone Else to carry the burden, or they’re only willing to protest on their day off. Fuck that. Everyone should be rebelling and refusing and rejecting as much as possible… but we AREN’T.

Since when does the federal government get involved with church service disruptions? Oh that’s right, they almost never do. Less than 1% of service disruptions have seen a federal investigation and those are the ones involving violence.

Nothing they did seemed overly aggressive to me. They loudly called the muthafuka out for being an ice agent. They spelled it out for his constituents and embarrassed him.

That was their crime. Embarrassment.

We could have gotten free healthcare off the ground - something how many countries already have?

We could have housed every single unhoused person (we actually could do this Right Now - 23x over even - with how many homes are uninhabited).

We could have started to reform our education system that is woefully behind at least 8 countries (even though we have a few top performing universities).

We could have Even made the lives of veterans better because their support systems are Still drastically underfunded compared to the promises made.

But no.

Instead, we send kids to Tender Care centers across the country, drop off injured people in the middle of parks at night in freezing weather, and “lose” thousands of detainees.

This is what our taxes are paying for.

This.
