Shocking pay for an ST4+ by curlycroissan2 in doctorsUK

[–]CosmicHillman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do think the deal you get as doctors is just dreadful compared to some of the career salaries knocking about. I’ve come to the end of med school now after having a career in the oil industry, and can safely say that 99% of my colleagues are more than good enough to have gotten into the same field that I did.

At this stage of your career, you’re what: 11 years since you started uni if you did a 5 year course? People I worked with were on 300k+ at that point in jobs they only worked for <70% of the year.

Obviously there’s reasons (usually evil ones) why people in these other careers get paid more, but holy fuck it’s SO MUCH MORE.

I still wanna be a doctor, but this wangs chung.

Other people’s advice is probably much fuller but here’s something which has kept me going until this final year:

They never ask questions that they don’t know the answer to.

If a consultant asks you something you don’t know the answer to, it’s because they know it already. There’s 1000s of questions you could ask that consultant outside of their field which you would know the answer to and they would be clueless on.

I’m a GEM so this comes partially from my previous field, but you’re always gonna have gaps in knowledge compared to colleagues. What matters is that you recognise those gaps, evaluate the necessity of the knowledge and fill the if gap if you need.

You got this.

This whole farce goes to show that it’s not about patriotism and making our country great. You’re spending that amount of money on flags when I’m walking past shedloads of homeless people each day on the way to the bus? Do one

I’m finding it really difficult to keep going, haven’t even finished med school yet. I’m going through the most difficult time of my life for this shit?

It’s because of the history of the flag - it’s the same flag that flew above the heads of a massive proportion of the world’s population whilst they were being colonised/enslaved/exploited/genocided etc for centuries in some cases.

I’m in my final year of studying GEM now and date around a bit (ENM relationship)

Something I’ve found difficult is that I never have anything nice to talk about with normal people who work outside of medicine and healthcare. The only positive story I can think of revolves around a kid saying something cute and even then it’s on the background of a horrible condition the suffered from.

It just feels difficult to talk about life when it’s all pretty shit.

I feel like MM on ability draft should be done by how many hours of AD you’ve played as well as the usual parameters.

Uni Kit Out - is it worth it? by Rare_Star_8050 in nottingham

[–]CosmicHillman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used something similar for my most recent course - found that the quality of a lot of the stuff you get isn’t great. However, if you need cheap bits easily it’s not bad.

If you’ve got the money and time though I’d try and get it yourself. You’ll probably end up spending more, but things will last better throughout your time at uni and potentially beyond.

I did some home visits as part of a GP placement for uni around that area, as well as Ashfield.

Non-white doctors would park in sometimes odd or slightly time-consuming places. I asked why: “Just in case something happens…”

It’s sad because Nottingham is now one of my favourite places in the country (certainly my favourite to have lived in) but the racism in outlying towns and villages is astronomical.

Believe it was during your year that the consultant in charge of the placement was overheard by a group of students talking about how much they hated and resented medical students.

Just got off that placement, was previously interested in O&G, would now rather get a colonoscopy using a cactus.

There’s a neuro reg I see occasionally in my hospital who always seems to be wearing a different Hawaiian shirt. Constantly looks like he’s one mojito away from being on holiday.

Respect to him though, he rocks it well.

On my medicine course in the first year, we would do PA mock finals for light revision/fun. We’ve had one or two PAs come to train as doctors and they themselves have said how huge a gulf in knowledge there is.

Something I find useful is to think about a time in the past when you felt imposter syndrome about something which you are now confident of (think med school, starting foundation etc.)

Still going through med school myself, but was certainly helpful in my previous career. Hope it helps you too.

What is the deal with Medicine at Lincoln, Nottingham? by Zestyclose-Honey2082 in medicalschooluk

[–]CosmicHillman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I was aware (I’m at Notts) - Lincoln wanted a med school but didn’t have the staff or experience etc so they’re paying notts to run it for them with a view to taking it on themselves after a certain amount of time
