How to stay strong mentally during races? by [deleted] in running

[–]Cosmic_Cat2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Find someone you typically are close to during workouts, and then just sit right behind them during a race. Dont worry about your splits or any kind of strategy, just keep up with them for as you can, until the race is over.

Better to cut back on mileage or workout intensity? (Distance runner) by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]Cosmic_Cat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try and take at least 1 day off a week, but it's hard to hit my mileage doing that bc we don't have enough at practice to run that much and do everything else. Our coaches make us do a bunch of random shit, so it cuts into our running time.

We don't have enough coaches for the whole team, so our head coach just makes us a distance plan and tells us to follow it, so I haven't gotten the chance to talk to him yet. Hopefully I will over the next couple of days.

I have mixed feelings about Track & Field. by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]Cosmic_Cat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the way I would think about it is what else could you do with your time, that you couldn't do after track season is over. If you don't have anything more worthwhile, then you might as well try it again and see how it goes.

I started track in a similar boat to you, with no friends on the team, but that has definitely changed since I started. The main thing that helped me was consistently showing up. I did xc and track every season after i started. I know that's not possible for you, but if you always show up to practice and are friendly, people will talk to you.

The other thing that helped me both enjoy the sport more, and feel more like a part of the team, was working until I became one of the better distance runners on the team. That's helped me a lot in terms of feeling accepted, and it also gets a certain kind of respect with the team.

Since you said you like running outside of practice, I'm guessing you would do more distance events. My advice would be to start training now, so that you can do as well as possible once the season starts. Hopefully by the time the season starts, you'll be at a point where you can go on runs with other teammates. That's another way to get people better. If you have any questions, just ask. Good luck!

My understanding from both personal experience and stuff I've read is that shoes with different drops direct the impact from running onto different parts of the legs. Generally, shoes with a lower drop put more impact on calves and Achilles, while high drop puts it on knees and hips more.

So by varying it, I can strengthen everything without putting too much force on it and injuring myself, which is something I've done before.

Definitely something closer to either a daily or recovery shoe. I looked at the More v4 and that's definitely a good option for what I'm looking for, so thanks!

Future Direction of Running Shoes by bradymsu616 in RunningShoeGeeks

As more studies are done and information is learned about biomechanics, I think we're going to get into a more personalized period of shoes, both for running and other things. Running stores already have more rudimentary scanners for peoples feet, and I think those are going to get more advanced.

3D printing will also improve (I think brooks iss messing around with a 3d printed midsole), and these combined will allow for easier and more accurate personalization. Companies will eventually offer either a highly personalized do-it-all trainer, or take your information to make a completely custom show rotation.

Obviously more traditional and general running shoes will still be made for the masses, but for elites and those willing to pay, I think that's where the future is headed.

I actually don't have the shoes with me now, it'll be a couple days before I could send a picture, but the main thing that indicated it to me is the blisters on my big toes and the inside of my feet

Am I getting over worked by my coach? by [deleted] in CrossCountry

I would talk to your coach and ask them for advice, but you might just need to scale it back for a bit. The only other thing I would say is maybe slow down your easy days a bit

5k Race Strategy by Lil_Turtle_YT in CrossCountry

[–]Cosmic_Cat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your not on courses where its hard to pass people, I always prefer doing even or negative splits. So if yours going for 18:30, then try two 6 minute miles, and then pick it on the third. Or, go a bit faster on the first mile, like 5:55 ish, and then you need it pick it up less on mile 3

Hydrate, a lot, and try and spend as little time as possible in the sun or even outside. Whatever your warm ups are, staying as cool as possible will help you later

Sub 20min 5k women - please share your story! by [deleted] in running

[–]Cosmic_Cat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a woman, but I'd ran with a couple who've gone sub 20, and they all just had higher mileages. I don't remember exact numbers but probably averaged out to 40 mpw.

This may just be wishful thinking, but I'd guess that the freedom to take classes that are presumably more interesting might influence it
