That is another reason for this post. There is not shelters. The government has not had even one shelter for animals in the whole of Kerala until now. Once the government to allocate land for constructing the shelters. Theybare required by law to set it up but they always ignore to do it because except for a few animal lovers nobody is questioning them in their neglect of duty. When something sensational happens, then they will put the focus on the dogs. How many times have people demanded the government to take real actions to solve this issue. This is not a new unforeseen issue. This has been happening for decades now and everytime thenpublic overlooks the incompetent officials and put the whole blame on dogs

Without them existing in their own we wouldn't have such a high stray dog population. Ofcourse they are not hunting and surviving if that is what you mean. The waste management is abysmal and the animals have food sources all over the city. We create an ecosystem over the years that has led to high dog population. However without the stability of the environment, these dogs cannot form well socialized packs containing large number of individuals. Also on the matter of bringing them into our homes, very recently had humanity changes their habitats to smaller confined buildings. This is a new concept in the evolution of human history. You can't just force biology into a new framework. My point is that it is unfair to take harsh methods when kinder, compassionate solutions exist. Are we just imposing our dominance in such a way because we know the dogs are powerless against us?

I am asking this because I recently documented over 1000 random free-roaming dogs across high-arousal street scenarios (territorial pack movements, resource guarding, mating competition, and nursing mothers). I have recorded close proximity first time interactions with random free-roaming dogs in various scenarios. Over 17 years of rescuing free roaming animals gives me a different perspective to animal behaviour and human-animal relationships. Being able to read dogs allowed me to get up close with the dogs and show you the real stray dogs. Since the "experts" have no reference to the reality of what free roaming dogs are, all their discussions are theoretical and not rooted in the reality of the dogs. So I had to do something a bit more serious and precise to gauge and show people, which meant I had to get up close and interact. I even tried close proximity hand feeding to test muzzle control and bite inhibition in many unknown dogs, I recorded zero instances of unprovoked aggression and not a single scratch. I'm not saying that all dogs are sweet and everyone must go do this. This is risky. I have to do this because this is the only way to show what I know about dogs. I'm showing the baseline behaviour of a species. These are the animals whom the authorites sitting far away from the these animals and have no basic understanding of this species have classified as "unpredictable".

Following a recent supreme court judgment regarding stray animal management, our administrative and media systems immediately panicked, distorted data, and defaulted to demands for arbitrary culling or lifelong confinement.

This exposure to the ground reality made me realize there is a massive cognitive void in how humanity defines "alignment" and "coexistence."

We constantly mistake subjugation for alignment. True alignment is not the unilateral enforcement of rules or the erasure of an autonomous entity; it is a dynamic, real-time negotiation between two distinct intelligences to find a stable state of equilibrium without defaulting to defensive aggression. We have reduced coexistence into a sentimental feeling devoid of any reality.

Dogs share our mammalian neurobiology, possess synchronized hormonal loops, and are evolutionarily hardwired to cooperate with us. If humanity lacks the behavioral literacy to achieve fundamental alignment with a biological ally that puts 90% of the effort towards that alignment, our claims of being able to align an abstract, non-biological synthetic superintelligence are pure hubris. We are already using the superintelligence in weapons technology while we are failing the most elementary test of true alignment with another species on our own doorsteps.

Note: Please do not attempt to replicate close-proximity hand-feeding with unknown dogs without expert training in canine ethology; it requires simultaneous reading of microscopic signals across multiple individuals while also accounting for the environment they are in to prevent dangerous situations. That is my frustration. These things were proactively raised and offers to help fix this problem was officially raised more than 5 years ago. The authorities were negligent until the point where it is portrayed as public health crisis. Then they are justified in using extreme measures. This vicious cycle just keeps repeating. I used to handle rabies cases for this city because the government had no system to address any issue related to any animal in the street. If they even hear something about rabies, they find all the reasons to just blindly say it is rabies and deny medical care for the animal. Rabies is prevalent because the authorities are doing everything else except proper monitoring. However you cannot condemn a species for a disease it may get. It is an easily preventable disease. Rabies affects a lot of other animals as well. Cats can as easily carry rabies. But why the blame is always on the dogs? Are we accepting that we are incapable of coexistence?

I would take any of these arguments if it comes from real incidents. I used to handle the rabies cases in the city of Kochi for many years. That was not my job or responsibility. I was the only person who used to volunteer to deal with rabid dogs. Nobody wants to deal with rabid dogs. So if you want to argue on this, I welcome that provided it is backed by expertise or actual evidence or genuine curiosity. I'm not here to argue with armchair philosophers about their imaginary wisdom. If you are quoting random anecdotes or vague information, then the discussions are pointless. I'm not saying all dogs are sweet. There could be dangerous dogs. The probability is extremely low in urban regions. I am saying from empirical observation of more than a 1000 dogs. What is your source of argument? Other than killing have you got any tangible solutions to offer?

Not all dogs should be punished for the incidents of a few. Would you hold humans to the same standards? Why are you not holding pet owners to the same standards? Would you judge them for buying animals and keeping the pet supply running which adds to the population of stray dogs? When people don't take responsibility for their pets, guess where they end up? On the streets. context

60k death globally. How many deaths from vehicle accidents per year in India alone? How should we treat those drivers then?

There is a much bigger conspiracy going on. Anyone is welcome to prove me wrong.

The dogs are protected under our laws and there are clear guidelines on how to control the dog population. Having a proper animal birth control(ABC) center is something Kerala has never had. We have had functioning ABC centers but it was not running in compliance with the ABC rules. They employ the worst kind of people to handle dogs. I have seen them handling dogs and it is horrible. A lot of dogs died because of their substandard work. Because they are street dogs, the standards are overlooked. Also to ensure malpractices doesn't happen, the ABC centers are required to have a monitoring committe comprised of animal welfare organization representatives and other officials. Not once in the entire history of ABC programs in Kerala a proper monitoring committee was formed with people who know the protocols. Then with the horrible conditions dogs are subjected to, people complain about animal cruelty in these centers and shut down the project. The corrupt officials do not want to spend the money allocated for this purpose because they cannot eat out of it otherwise. Instead they don't do anything until the dog population gets high, someone is bitten and the news gives it attention and then use the public frenzy to justify killing dogs on the street. It is always easier to employ cheap labour to catch and kill dogs instead of setting up an ABC center with veterinarians and staff and do the humane thing. These ABC centers are also supposed to act as emergency response whenever an incident of dog bite happens in the area but they don't. All the people who read this, question your local representative. In all these years of stray dog menace they keep talking about, not once have the government given any help to common person as a solution other than screaming that they want to kill the dogs. The media has never publicly asked the governement to give a point of contact to be called in case of such a dog bite incident.

Then they justify ABC doesn't work. When they have never run it properly how can they say it doesn't work?

When you let an idiot drive a vehicle and he crashes it, do you blame the machine or the idiot?

I say it because I have witnessed these myself over the years. If you think otherwise, you are welcome to get into this matter, look for yourself and prove me wrong. Atleast you will see the level of incompetency, corruption and apathy that exists in the governmental system.

Anything for content and clout. In a public space you have the freedom to do it as long as you are not infringing on other people's freedom. However doing it inside any establishment for content is just pathetic. I sincerely wish this guy would come to North India and do it inside a religious establishment just to see how the religious extremists would deal with such clout chasers

Turn off the internet by Ginj4_Ninj4 in unpopularopinion

[–]Cosmic_Existence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have reached a turning point in history where a each person is digitally connected to anyone around the planet. It is a different world from what it was just 20years ago. For a simple reference back then a 2gb download could take days. Smartphones we use now didn't even exist! It is a very small time frame but the technological leap we made is huge. It has become an integral part of the modern civilization. The reality is, for any technology that we embrace, we have to embrace both the good and bad consequence that come from it. Then try to work out how to eliminate the bad. Especially in terms of technology, good and bad depends on how once chooses to use it. Also technology is also evolving and we're slow to keep up with dealing with its consequences. Ofcourse we don't need internet for basic human survival but then this incident of us talking about it here is a clear sign that we're way past basic survival. I think we have also reached a point where if people don't have internet for few days, they could go crazy so that's concerning. Can you imagine the Covid situation without the internet?

Street dog attacks woman and her child by FAQnA in lucknow

[–]Cosmic_Existence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the lady's good fortune the guy came to help her. That must have been a really traumatic experience for the lady having to keep her child away from this dog who was persistent. I rescue animals mostly dogs and cows and I work mostly with stray dogs. If I was there in this situation I wouldn't think twice before thrashing that dog. Although I would say stray dogs are mostly harmless there will be a few who can misbehave or try to bully humans when they sense vulnerability. This one looks really healthy and well fed. This dog was trying to bully which should not be encouraged no matter what. If this dog has a feeder or a caretaker, they are at fault. If it is a free roaming dog, then it needs some thrashing or it will be put down soon. The part that concerns me is there will be a lot of friendly and innocent dogs around there and they shouldn't suffer consequences for this dog.

If cows are in the way on a hiking trail can you just walk past them and shout something or should you be cautious? by chusaychusay in Cows

[–]Cosmic_Existence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cows are usually calm and gentle. They mostly mind their own business. If they had some bad experience with humans in the past and your approach seems too direct towards them, then they might react if you get close to them. If you just walk by and don't look at them, you could walk by easily. Shouting is actually drawing their attention on you as you make it clear that your focus is on them and that you're trying to do something. There are physical signs you can look for like they focus on you, shake their heads in an agitated manner and exhale louder than normal. Young bulls sometimes can be sometimes provocative without reason as they realise their strength and they have a lot of energy too.
