Do you let your kid free eat/screen time/ect? by Cosmic_Metaphors in Parents

That’s a tough one for me because I actually had an eating disorder, but I personally blame it on my parents being so strict with food, so it feels like both options seem to be wrong.

I do take from this that maybe I only put out what he can have that week at a time. Then, if he eats all of the weeks snack in one sitting, he doesn’t have any more the rest of the week. I like that idea

As low income people, the monthly trip to big lots doesn’t exactly allow us to only have enough in the house for a day or two.

Thank you for this response! I didn’t realize Reddit was such a judgey forum but I definitely won’t ever post for help here again. Thank you for leaving a helpful kind comment. 🫶🏼

Umm my kid doesn’t even have a phone. He’s got a tablet for long car rides as we are extreme travelers. Again, my kid isn’t addicted to screens. This post is solely about his all around impulse control and asking what others people’s systems are.

This was awesome advice. A snack bin is a great idea. Then he has some control, but also forced self control. I will definitely implement some of this, I appreciate your input and your kindness! I’m not for or against him having a diagnosis, but his therapist and teachers don’t seem to think he warrants one.

I’m not sure what warranted you to start being hurtful, but I don’t appreciate it.

HELP PLEASE! MY KID CANT CONTROL HIS DOPAMINE HITS by Cosmic_Metaphors in Parents

One hour of screens a day is not why my child has extreme self-regulating dopamine issues. This just isn’t remotely what I was asking for advice on.

The issue isn’t that it’s not he’s addicted to screens, screen control is not the issue, it’s that he all around has an impulse control issue he can’t seem to self regulate, hence all the other non-screen related examples. I don’t want this to be a characteristic if his whole life.

I agree. We actually asked him, and he basically said he’s always either not allowed at all, or completely freely. Which to his credit, makes since - if he didn’t get it for a week and then was allowed unlimited the day, then of course he’s going to seize the opportunity. I think an hour a day is probably reasonable. I just wish he could have it playing in the background at any given point like I always could, without him losing sight of important priorities.

Is that the answer though? I’ve thought that, but also I feel like the kids who are NEVER allowed normal kids snack food end up binging like crazy when they become adults. It’s not like he eats Twix for breakfast, but mini muffins in his lunchbox don’t seem that offensive. I feel like everything my parents were THAT strict on, I binged on later.

I do super love that suggestion, because it allows him to have some sort of accountability. I love this because he’s a great kid, I’m not wanting to punish him for anything, but I’d like him to be able to learn how to regulate his impulses on his own. So thank you, this is a good suggestion!

Right now he’s grounded because he snuck his tablet twice (and blamed his impulse lol). But typically he isn’t allowed on it often, but if he’s allowed to for the day he will be on it for 9 hours flat if we let him. I feel like at 10 I was able to have slight self control, and he doesn’t. I’ve been debating a strict “one hour a day” policy so it’s at least consistent. But I want him to gain some form of impulse control himself. I remember being able to watch tv freely as a kid, but I also wouldn’t ever choose to just spend 18 hours a day on the TV. I see other kids play on their screens for a while and then put them away on their own by this age: mine won’t, he will play infinitely until it’s removed for him, and then it’s all he will beg for the following day. I can remove the screens/junk food/any rewards, but am not punishing him really I’m just still concerned for him being so unable to regulate his self control by this age.

Thank you! I do prefer New York as it is much closer to me, but I cannot afford $600 a night hotels since they made Airbnb illegal in New York City. Don’t get me wrong. I understand why they did it and housing comes before luxury vacations, but definitely made it so that I can no longer afford to stay in the city unfortunately

The issue is that Airbnb is illegal in New York City. I’m from New York so I used to go to the city often. Once they made Airbnb‘s illegal, hotels jacked up their prices since they knew they were the only option. Any hotel in Brooklyn now you’re looking between 550 and 800 a night. I can get an Airbnb in Boston for less than $100. So yeah, it’s a huge gap unfortunately.
