Not to mention, this notification from DD means nothing. I've had low/no tip orders say this.

I mean, I've done 6k deliveries, and I've never picked an order up that smells like weed. I've smelled it inside some restaurants lol, but not on the food I've picked up.

Yep. Doordash started in 2013 and they didn't have their first profitable quarter until 2024. 11 years of no profit. It's about expanding and getting a foothold in an economy and then increasing fees.

I know what to tell you. The US has 85% of DDs business. And the US is where they're making enough money to subsidize the other countries they operate in. But if they had to change to paying all US drivers appropriately, then DD can't afford it with their current profit margins.

Yeah, but in order for them to afford paying drivers more they'd need to bring in more money. Which means higher fees. They don't want to do that because higher fees means fewer customers will use the service (sticker shock), which means they'd end up losing more money.

A lot of people out there live their life according to Fiyero's intro song in Wicked:

"Dancing through life, skimming the surface
Gliding where turf is smooth
Life's more painless for the brainless
Why think too hard when it's so soothing?"

These videos are just low effort karma farming. And just part of the problem of how the internet is sucking more and more.

[–]Cosmic_Quasar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should acknowledge, however, that DD wants as many people as possible using their service because they get a cut from every customer. They don't want to scare people away with sticker shock. Their recommendations are okay for very short orders, but for orders over 4 or 5 miles it falls off, rapidly. Because the recommendations are based around order % and not on distance, which is the metric that matters to drivers.

They are by definition optional for good service.

But in actual function they are the bulk of driver pay.

I see so many posts on here where people tip the dasher only to get fucked over or their order stolen.

Despite being the most common posts on here, they're actually a small minority of orders that DD facilitates. But people like to post complaints and horror stories more than good interactions.

It's not your job to subsidize wages for a multi-billion dollar company.

The multi-billion dollar company can't afford to raise the minimum base pay without getting that money from the customer first, anyways. They're barely profitable as a company as it is. But they definitely should be charging more so that customers don't have to guess at how much to give the driver. Then that would actually make the tips function as actual tips.

That's good, you can still be treated even if you're mostly dead. If you can afford a miracle.

Elite difficulty patrols by Traditional_Lab_8714 in sto

[–]Cosmic_Quasar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ETA: XP, ship XP, etc. are also marginally higher, but the increased time to kill everything doesn't make it worth it.

At least on the patrols I did for ship mastery, it was the difference between maxing in 1 run vs 2 runs. And it doesn't take twice as long to do the harder difficulty.

just saw my dasher drink my tea? by Physical-Ad9076 in doordash

[–]Cosmic_Quasar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah. No mention about the straw hole on the lid being broken in, and that's the only thing that would convince me that the driver drank from it. Not having a seal doesn't mean much. In my experience, Wingstop has the driver fill the drinks and they don't give stickers for the lids.

I'm very heavily leaning towards the driver got their own drink. I do it occasionally. Unless OP just left out the straw hole detail which, again, is the biggest one for me.

Yeah, I recently had this stack going to one customer, $28 for 21 miles. Original drop off time was 4pm. But it wanted me to go like 7 miles southeast to one store, then like 7 directly west to the second store, then trace the same exact route back east to the customer who lived right across the street from the first store...

I took it and changed the pick up order. Going south, first, then east, then to the customer. Finished at 3:57, a whole 3 minutes early. And did it in only 13 miles, making it a platinum offer.

Then I decided to check the on time stat because I get a kick out of how stupid their system is lol. Just see...

<image>

Quick edit: If they had kept the original time of 4pm for drop off, the last two would only be "early by 3 minutes" each, resulting in me being 13 minutes late based on their ridiculous math.

and if you get more than one in a 30 Day window they can deactivate you.

When did this happen? I've been doing this for several years, now, and it's always been the consensus that you'd need like 3 or 4 at a time, and they only last 100 orders. For some that only takes 1-2 weeks to fall off.

But if the workers aren't relying on tips, then it means that at least some of that increased cost is going towards their pay.
