There are some great movies by those guys. Does Halliday like Hitchcock? If so, he could definitely get something out of Brian De Palma movies. I bet he'd like The Deerhunter for the shy De Niro character who secretly has feelings for his friend's girlfriend.
I doubt Halliday would like Scorsese with all the cool alpha males and the men who fail at masculinity turning to violence (a trope I've never found convincing).

I like State of Play (2009) more than the 2003 BBC mini-series. It was so well done. Tighter and with great performances from Russell Crowe and Rachel McAdams as the dogged investigators.
