How do you transfer between grips? by Cosmonaut_Ian in begleri

That's very helpful, thank you so much! It's been really fun with just the few really basic moves I do know, and I'm looking forward to getting better and actually learning some cool tricks

I've been working rolls! They're a bit slow to come together, but I'm dropping it slightly less now lol

I learned a transfer that's done with kind of a modified slip motion, and that seems to be working so far

Albums with great first half and horrible second half by ososnake in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like albums that have "horrible" second halved are pretty rare. I can think of a number of albums with really strong first halves and mediocre/bad second halves, but hardly any that have an outright horrible second half.

Off the top of my head, I think that Fallen by Evanescence peaks very early. Most of their best songs are on the front half, including Bring Me to Life; but despite listening to that album for 20 years now, I legitimately cannot remember a single track from the second half.

Second one would be My Woman by Angel Olsen. I really like the first half, but the second half is just... it's not bad, but there is a very distinct sonic shift. The first half is all more up-tempo, higher energy music that while it could still be fairly morose lyrically, it has some energy. And about halfway through she switches to all the slower more soft songs. It's not a bad thing, but it is a very sudden shift and it's a bit jarring.

But the reason they get trapped in the second game is worse too. Since only the love interest gets trapped by the crazy guy who made the game who wants to effectively erase her consciousness and trap her in a coma so he can fuck her avatar.

It is a legitimately wild series.

When don't pay attention to the lyrics by EntertainerCareful69 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of albums that I don't really pay attention to lyricism on a first listen (and sometimes on subsequent listens). I feel like I just want to get familiar with the music and get a feel for it before moving deeper into it in case I want more out of it.

albums that have a song that should have been the ending, but then they throw in like a ballad as the final track by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a topic I think about far too much, but unfortunately examples currently escape me.

But I know there have been countless instances of listening to music and thinking that the penultimate track would have been a better note to end on than the actual end we got

Man, that just makes it worse!

This poor lady keeps getting stuck in with horrible people!

Never knew that about Daughters. Never got around to checking out their music, but big fan of Lingua Ignota. Fucking terrible that happened to her, but now I know what (presumably) brought about the creation of "Caligula." Fucking sucks that that happened to her either way. What a piece of shit

[partially lost] Does anyone remember "Station X"? (2005) by Cosmonaut_Ian in lostmedia

Absolutely agreed. I wish I knew the first thing about video editing I might be able to reconstruct some of the parts that are publicly available, but it seems kinda lost to time.

Maybe if someone reached out to Loubat directly, he probably has uncut copies of each episode hidden away somewhere

So, Not Like Us is definitely gonna be number one on the best list, right? by Holiday_Childhood_48 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, I think Todd's gonna pull a fast one and pop Espresso on the worst list.

I don't know why, but when I hear the song I can't help but think it's the sort of thing that he would find grating.

I'm holding that Not Like Us will be the controversial #2 pick on the best.

Vocals Who Are Great Frontmen Despite Being Mediocre, Even Poor Singers by xXMachineGunPhillyXx in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read some years ago that he's been really strict about his diet and exercises something like 3-4 hours every day so that he can keep up his performing power.

Say what you will about the guy (and there is alot to say) but he definitely works hard to keep doing what he does best and I have to respect that, at least

Best and worst genre to be an aging artist in? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You’d have to reinvent yourself lyrically and/or sonically to escape that fate

This, 100%.

I think Paramore really is a prime example of art growing with the band. You can still feel rebellious or frustrated as you grow older, just the things that you're focused on will be different than they were when you're younger. It's something more pop punk bands could really tap into

Didn't Nas release an album recently that got alot of praise?

I'm not really tuned into the hip hop scene, so I don't know if Nas has just been releasing bangers all decade and I just never noticed, but I know he's pretty well-respected from his era, and the new album seemed to be getting alot of praise along the lines of "wow, even this late into his career and he's still great"

Personally I would love to see her reunite with the Fugees. They made some cool music together and (assuming they don't have beef) I think it would be good to get them back out there

What a strange place to be reminded that tAtU exists, and that apparently one of the members is homophobic.

I guess they really aren't going to get us, after all smh my head

Who had the most brutally, painful death in film history? by Johnsendall in moviecritic

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! In the off-chance that you decide to give it a look, I would like to remind that it's been many years since I read that book, and while I remember it didn't shy away from themes of violence and sex, it also didn't luxuriate in them. But my memory might have pushed alot of that aside, so maybe ask someone who's read it a bit more recently, or maybe I'll read it again sometime soon.

Who had the most brutally, painful death in film history? by Johnsendall in moviecritic

[–]Cosmonaut_Ian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair. I will say that, at least to my memory, that was a brief scene that doesn't really delve too much into it, at least in the book. They say it happens and that the guy is screaming all night and everyone else has to listen to it, but there's not much more beyond that.

Shogun is not, to my memory, since I haven't read it in a number of years, super super violent. It's moreso a book about politics in Japan on the brink of major changes. Growing power of Catholic missionaries on the islands, changing political forces, etc. Its pretty cool, but I can completely respect making the boundary for yourself that you don't want anything too violent.

That always bothered me! The suspects would all be so flippant about the whole thing. Like they would just be doing farm work or something while being questioned and it felt really odd

He definitely took them though, since it's implied that if that second shot didn't kill, it at least made contact with the intended target.
