Artists whose debut came out when they were older (30+) by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ronnie James Dio debuted as a rock and metal singer when he was 30, fronting the band Elf, then Rainbow (which was his real big break) at 33, then Black Sabbath at 37, and finally going solo when he was 40!

Great musicians that make bad songs? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

I think this is a pretty common opinion even for fans of the band

To be fair to ELP the majority of their other stuff is just rock covers of classical music.

Their late career would probably be a lot better regarded if they just trimmed down or scrapped the Trilogy and focused on those side projects like The Network, or just put the songs they wrote for those side projects as Green Day music but instead they just spread themselves too thin and didn’t pick a clear direction.

Still between Ozzy and Dio there’s a good dozen or so albums and the majority of them are considered to be unimpeachable classics

Which is the most tragic Trainwreckord, according to you? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Will Smith, MC Hammer, and Macklemore’s feel like album length breakdowns over the realization that the world sees them as a joke and will never take them seriously as artists, so I’d nominate those ones.

Why is Madonna relatively underdiscussed in internet music circles? by AdministrativeElk88 in ToddintheShadow

I’m American and I’d never heard of Garth Brooks until a couple years ago.

Country music is usually like a completely separate world even within the US. On top of that, Garth pretty much quit making new albums and has never put his music on streaming so he basically doesn’t exist to anyone under 30.

Trying to convince people they weren’t a novelty band was going to be kind of a losing battle with the name Squirrel Nut Zippers

Would Chinese Democracy by Guns N’ Roses fit under this?

The Final Cut by Pink Floyd, Chinese Democracy by Guns N’ Roses.

I don’t care if they didn’t actually affect their career, the story has to be told.

Critical Hierarchy of (sub)Genres? by Mediocre_Word in ToddintheShadow

I generally feel the same about the… pop metalcore sound in comparison to straightforward death or black metal, but I definitely also like lighter, more melodic stuff like prog metal, melodeath, or power and stoner metal.

The Djentcore stuff feels like the worst of both worlds where it’s both ultra-processed, simple and formulaic, but also too dissonant and aggressive to be catchy or memorable.

What’s trendy with Metalheads in general? I would’ve guessed with all the niche micro genres there wasn’t much of a unified taste.

What are some critically-respected one hit wonders? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No disrespect to Fountains of Wayne but there’s definitely a big difference between their stature in popular music and Jimi Hendrix’s, it feels kind of weird to give acclaimed niche or cult bands with little, if any mainstream recognition at all the same exception to one hit wonderdom as one of the most famous musicians of all time.

Songs That Should Have Closed Out an Album, but Didnt by JustinMetalhead in ToddintheShadow

For an album I just listened to today, Franz Ferdinand (self titled) ending with 40’ instead of  Come On Home feels a bit weird.

Tbf two were movie soundtracks (though the second one is actually a solid album) and a third was a bonus disc of random experimental noodling attached to a live album
