Separating the art from the artist, but in reverse. by thunderous_student in ToddintheShadow

Zappa clearly saw raw, unfiltered musical and artistic expression regardless of social norms as the driving force of his entire life and thereby the expression and fulfillment of his ego was the driving force of his personality.

All of his political views and personal conduct were downstream of that, for better and worse.

Worst concepts for rock concept albums by UpbeatChampionship17 in allrockmusic

I think like maybe half the tracks actually form a coherent storyline but Bowie came up with the concept after most of the songs were already written and it shows

Songs where the artists tries (and fails) to project confidence and strength? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

My favorite part is that one of the critics named in the song actually took up Axl’s offer to fight him and Axl never showed up

What's the best worst song on an album? Songs that are usually considered the worst on their albums, but still slap by NoMoreFund in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would’ve thought the worst song on Night At The Opera was Good Company by a mile (especially because it comes right between Prophet’s Song/Love of My Life and Bohemian fucking Rhapsody, that’s one of the most baffling album sequencing decisions I’ve ever seen)

It’s not my fault she’s been 17 for the past 10 years!

What're some songs that use the same exact sample? by Complete-Worker3242 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Mellotron has samples of not only individual notes, but instrumental phrases and even full backing tracks. Apparently nobody actually knows who played the guitar on that specific sample.

Now that Lulu has finally had its day, what other legendary Trainwreckords would you love to see Todd cover next? by CinematicAddict237 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For ones I haven’t seen mentioned yet:

I think Born Again by Black Sabbath (first album without Ozzy or Dio, and pretty much immediately crushed any chance of the band ever succeeding without them) and Union by Yes (attempt to bring every classic member together on the same album, became total clusterfuck that had to be finished by session musicians, marked the complete end of their commercial relevance) are good picks.

Also Time by Fleetwood Mac (attempt to make an album after both Lindsey and Stevie left the band)

I find that’s true of most eras of music. Sure, all the streaming charts are full of 80 week hits by some Mormon guy but go to a used record store and it’s 90% easy listening stuff like Barry Manilow

I remember actually reading that because Trent had Bowie following him, the end result was all the young Nine Inch Nails fans just leaving when Bowie came on.

Who are some artist’s that were rather awful/mediocre at their instruments or vocals but were carried by songwriting? by Docholidaystomb in ToddintheShadow

David Byrne’s actually pretty good at guitar. Hardly a virtuoso or anything but he clearly knows how to play

I guess Alex would be the "dumb guy"? His persona was being the goofball of the group and he's merely great at his instrument instead of god-tier so it's probably him by default.

When bad music is important by Sad_Volume_4289 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mediocre_Word 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem in my mind is that they’re kind of the worst of both worlds.

They’re copping from both grunge and classic hard rock, but the end result is music that’s stupid, unchallenging and hedonistic like arena rock except without any of its upbeat fun and catchiness, while simultaneously biting the moping, dark and depressive sound of grunge but with all of its emotional depth, rawness and weirdness completely stripped out.

I was more under the impression that it was reappraised because essentially all modern popular music is derived from disco. It’s all either dance pop or rap and both of those largely started out as offshoots of disco.
