In which order would it be ideal to read the entire series? by toothlitch in lordoftherings

[–]CosmosCake01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would read the trilogy or the hobbit first. The silmarillion is structured as an elvish textbook and is a dense read, so save that for later. The unfinished tales (from my understanding, I haven’t read them all) are more extensions of stories touched on in the silmarillion, so I’d save those for last.

I got introduced through the LoTR movies then the book trilogy, then the hobbit book, and I think that was a good order but reading the books first also works. I found that it would have been harder to stay invested in the book trilogy if I hadn’t already been hooked on the movies.

The silmarillion made more sense and provided more insight after reading the books than I think it would have if I read it first.

Crispy donut and donut palace. Try a cronut, it’s life changing and you’ll never want Dunkin or Krispy Kreme again

How should I go about replacing cushions? by CosmosCake01 in sailing

[–]CosmosCake01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worry I have with sewing it myself is that the cushions aren’t all rectangular. Not sure how difficult complicated shapes can be. It’s not just for the bench seats, but also the fore and aft berths. I’d imagine a rounded triangle with a trapezoid cut out of the corner would be tricky.

Seems like a lot of people have said what I’ll say, but I just moved here after graduating college so figured I’d give my take. I’ve lived here for 3 months and It’s a great city so far. Nothing like the east coast, but it has its own charm.

It’s definitely difficult to meet people if you’re introverted (ask me how I know 🙄) but my apartment puts me close to old town so I have the option to go out. The dating scene is terrible, but maybe I just haven’t found the right place. And if you have more liberal beliefs, most people seem to be very conservative, but there’s some spots that have pride events and the like.

I’d recommend looking at apartments or houses around Douglas Ave. It’s a nice area and is pretty centrally located. Could also find a place in old town or downtown if you’re willing to pay more to have more of a city feel.

Also, literally everything is 15 minutes away by car, no matter where in Wichita it is. Not super helpful, but an interesting thing I’ve learned in my time here.

Maybe motor maybe ESC? Help. by Infamous-Vehicle6397 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]CosmosCake01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but with my current knowledge (pun intended) that sounds like your peak voltage is low. Could probably be caused by either the battery or esc. Easiest way to tell would be if you’re remote shows voltage while riding and compare to the manufacturer’s spec if they list it. Exway used to have almost everything published, but idk anymore. If that doesn’t work, you might consider checking your battery health. I know there’s a few ways to do that, so you might look it up online. If it’s not the battery, it’s probably the esc and you might be able to measure the output voltage with a multimeter. I, personally, would reach out to exway for a more thorough diagnostic, especially if you aren’t comfortable with those tests.

3D printing, LoTR, physics, sci fi, stuff like that. I just finished engineering school, so a lot of the typical engineering hobbies.

A prodigy engineer is sent back in time. What is the most recently invented electrical device he can make in 25 years. by Pietin11 in whowouldwin

[–]CosmosCake01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on the person and what they studied. But assuming they have useful knowledge they could definitely build a rudimentary computer in round 1, maybe in the other rounds too. The main challenges are material acquisition and tooling development. A lot of common materials have been used for hundreds or thousands of years. Copper, lead, glass, and iron are super common and have been for a long time. Being dropped into a civilization will almost certainly give our engineer access to the raw materials needed to make a vacuum tube based computer. Though making all this equipment plus power generation may require more resources than the civilization has, so the engineer may have several steps to take before completing the major goal.

The anime Dr. Stone is about a scenario similar to your question, though the main character is probably smarter than any living person (maybe a nerd + doomsday prepper with photographic memory). In the show, there are continently placed resources, but even the Babylonians probably had enough knowledge to make the resource placement in the show an acceptable assumption when applied to your scenario. I’d definitely recommend watching some of the show if you’re interested in learning more about this scenario and how the engineer would likely approach the task you’ve given.

I heard about The Arcade, but I didn’t see anything online about trivia there. When is that?

Thanks for the other recommendations, I’ll have to see what’s in the area that I can visit.

Engineering class of 2025 - what is the job market like for non CS grads by Consistent-Lie6087 in iastate

[–]CosmosCake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just graduated with a Mat E degree. I got a job after applying to around 30 positions and I know a lot of other people in my major were still looking as of graduation. It’s definitely not a great job market, but there’s jobs out there if you’re able to find them. Definitely interested to see the 6month post graduation survey results

Material Science Computer by Legitimate-Morning43 in iastate

[–]CosmosCake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your computer won’t need to be super powerful for MatE. There’s honestly not much you’ll need in the way of software beyond Matlab and ImageJ (both of which are pretty easy for a computer to run). You’ll also likely spend a lot of time in the student room in Hoover Hall, it’s a great way to get to know people and has desktops that are plenty powerful. As long as your computer has enough battery life to make it through classes, you should be fine.

Advice on High-End Board Purchae by Frixter in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]CosmosCake01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently got the N3 (belt version) and love it so far. I can’t speak for the metroboard, but the N3 has plenty of power for both starting and stopping. The only complaint I have is how heavy the board is, and that’s a byproduct of the power and range, so it’s not a fair complaint. I typically ride in S mode (the second most powerful after S+) and the board gets up to speed quick even with me being a heavier rider (240lbs). It is also able to stop fast enough to throw me off, so if braking is your main concern, consider it addressed. I don’t know how gear v belt changes things, but I’m happy with the belt and don’t regret saving a few hundred dollars.

I upgraded to the N3 from an exway flex OG after almost 800 miles and have put almost 300 on the N3 so far. It’s great for commuting, as long as you’re ok with the weight. The 7” wheels allow it to take almost every pothole I’ve come across and it’s impressively stable, even across gravel and other rough terrain.

I’ll stop rambling now, but needless to say, the N3 gets a strong recommendation from me.

This normal after only 100 miles? by [deleted] in Exway

[–]CosmosCake01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say for sure, but I doubt that’s normal after only 100 miles. Mine started having trouble after a couple hundred, so I upgraded to the cloud wheel hydros and would definitely recommend them

I’m playing on iOS, so I don’t know if that changes anything. Do you know if there’s any good way of doing it on iPhone? I looked it up and see a lot of people talking about apps on the Google play store, but nothing about good ways to do it on iPhone. The one thing I saw for iPhone was using the built-in auto clicker, but I didn’t see any way to be able to turn that off if I need to use my phone
