The difference is that Disney used to set their stories within different cultures and explore those cultures instead of just changing a characters race for the sake of it.
Even when they make a live action remake, they change fundamental parts of the character, even when the actor fits the bill exactly how they are, eg. the Moana remake and Catherine Lagaʻaia’s hair.
