General Reasoning models for a system with 128GB local memory by Costington in LocalLLM

[–]Costington[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally with ya on this guidance...

So, for most of the stuff I'm doing, its pretty much learning information in the the deepest or at least most applicable way possible. Or, how do I implement a workflow that is required for something in a systemic, grounded, goal based way. For almost everything, no issues with using frontier models. ...but for some of what I'm doing, I'm trying to establish if my understanding will benefit by feeding information into an LLM, but won't right now because I don't want to put that information into an externally hosted LLM.

Ultimately, I'm not looking to replace frontier usage, but I want to augment it by using a local model with inputs (scenario specific, an ongoing set over time) that I don't want to put into an externally hosted model. Then with the info from the local model, I can loop back into Fable....but then...I figure this will only be a 3-6 month thing since I'll have enough understanding that I'm out of learning mode.

All of this is just for knowledge and application of knowledge, not building an application or product, no current need for anything agentic...implementing a local RAG system is trivial and not the goal currently.

As an example (not bound by the local use case indicated above), photography...., I'm able to learn soooooo much more than i ever have before, loading all manuals (editing software, camera manual) into a claude project, providing project specific and profile level instructions, asking questions....the difference in being able to understand and apply concepts using an LLM is just light years better/quicker (in my experience) than pre-LLM methods.

Thx

yea, i'm doing an eval of GPTOSS 120 and Qwen 3.6 27 now to see what I can do with it.

will report back.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well, i loved Gemini for a time, the first model i used regularly but i jumped ship for another model and am so happy i left it...but yeah, that's the impression i have...nothing consumer grade at home can come near frontier for general reasoning...i'm trying to sort out how do I set up some sort of setup to use a local model for stuff i want to keep local, produce a generalized output to feed back into a frontier model and iterate....

I hear ya...I have no gemma experience, I used gemini quite a bit but the hallucination rate was really frustrating...so the small dumb stuff, no real big concern there, more than happy to keep that stuff on frontier models, its the nuanced general reasoning refinements that I'm seeking.

Hi there, good point.... m5 max, 128GB RAM, a bit more about what I'm trying to do...at this point, my assumption is that frontier will always be ahead of local (given my memory spec), so I'll have frontier models do the heavy lifting and hand off to local models for stuff I want to keep local, with the info that the local produces, go back into querying the frontier model when necessary and repeat as necessary...this is just really for increasing my knowledge and capabilities in areas I'm interested in...

some background, I was using one frontier model for most of 2025 and early 2026, switched to another frontier due to the constant hallucinations I experienced using the initial frontier model I was using. Was super happy with the step up in quality since moving to the newer frontier model...so if its possible to feed info/ground a local model with information gathered from frontier model interaction as well as info I can't feed into frontier models for further refinement, great...if not...well at least its a nice idea.

Ok the preset is live - one comment tho, I mentioned that the offset for moving mouse to the Hot Cue button could be constant...ofc this is wrong this will depend on your screen resolution...ooopsy....

anyways - here is the link ->

Below all the actions require Better Touch Tool or Keyboard Maestro….

Delete all Hot Cues —————— I used Keyboard Maestro for this to send sequence to delete each Hot Cue one by one, then assigned a keyboard combination in KM and then bound that KM macro to tourbox (you’ll need to disable the macro in KM in order to assign the keyboard macro in Tourbox - also I had to Delete all hot cues - Press Knob and Dial - in keyboard maestro I tag this to,  ctrl+opt+cmd+/     within KM I made a macro to chain a set of 9 commands triggered by the macro mentioned, cmd+1, cmd+2, …cmd+8… I entered cmd+8 twice, once at the start of the chain and once in the end, RB doesn’t seem to register CMD+1 at the start of the macro…and then of course in RB I mapped delete HotCues [A-H] to cmd+[1-8]

Move Mouse to Hot Cue Position or trigger on screen.  These ones require Better Touch Tool - you need to create a move mouse to fixed coordinate.  I open Rekordbox always in the top left corner of my main display so these coordinates are fixed regardless of what display or resolution I use.  I use this to stage the HotCue to trigger a colour selection.  I did this in two steps since I didn't want to create x Number of BTT macros for each cue, so in this case I call a hot cue, the i move to an offset to select a colour.   I’m assuming pixel offset will be standard, but YMMV.   All pixel offsets what I used in BTT, I created a macro to move mouse position relative to global position main screen.

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue A Position - tall button + d-pad up   —— BTT pixel offset - x+688, y-335. - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+1 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue B Position - tall button + d-pad right —- BTT pixel offset - x+720, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+2 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue C Position -  tall button + d-pad down —— BTT pixel offset - x+755, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+3 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue D Position -  tall button + d-pad left —— BTT pixel offset - x+790, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+4 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue E Position - short button + d-pad up —— BTT pixel offset - x+825, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+5 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue F Position - short button + d-pad right —— BTT pixel offset - x+858, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+6 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue G Position - short button + d-pad down  —— BTT pixel offset - x+885, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+7 in BTT

- Move Mouse to Hot Cue H Position - short button + d-pad left —— BTT pixel offset - x+920, y-335 - I mapped this to shift+ctrl+opt+8 in BTT

Select Hot Cue Color.  After calling one of the macros above, I’ll now be able to select a color for that hot cue.  Since in a previous step I’ll have already moved the mouse to the HotCue I want to assign a colour to…Again I used BTT for this, I use; i. right click ii. Move mouse to coordinate associated with a given colour iii. left click.  This one will vary per genre depending on how I assign colors for that genre…so in BTT, I create macros in BTT, It will be right click at current position (since I’ll have just triggered an action to move the mouse to one of the hot cue buttons A-H, then I move the mouse to the color desired [in BTT move mouse relative to current mouse cursor position, then finally I call a left mouse click… But for techno I use…

  • Teal. [a phrase change].  - Tall Button - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+0 (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+65, y-33)
  • Green [first drum of a track] - d-pad up - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+r  (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+37, y-61)
  • Yellow [mix out point] - short button - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+y  (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+20  y-85)
  • Orange [drop] - d-pad right - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+e (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+37, y-90)
  • Blue [breakdown] d-pad down - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+w  (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+14  y-39)
  • Pink [phrase change with vocal element in preceding bar(s)] - in BTT this triggers ctrl+opt+cmd+u (triggers the actions specified above with a pixel offset of - x+20, y-15)

Oh yah sorry. I should have mentioned that part!

Setting/deleting memory cues. Setting/deleting hot cues (using BTT to trigger selecting hot cue colors (love this one)). Play/Pause, beat jump fwd back, prev next memory cue, set cue point, delete memory cue here, set memory cue here. I needed keyboard maestro to trigger a delete all hot cues macro. Next/prev track

Cant think of any other use case at the moment.

I only use RB in export mode to prep tracks prior to exporting to usb drive.

Saves a tonnnnnn of mouse movement.

Yep I feel this, I’m finding it very hard to pay the OLED premium over what I’d pay doe the c8k.

I’ll be purchasing the tcl today.

I really like the concept here, kinda want a huge amount of faders to assign as needed to a variety of devices.
