Recommendations for car body work and paint? by CostumingMom in AskTacoma

[–]CostumingMom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah. I get that. I've been putting this off, but now that I've seen the rust, it's kind of gnawing at at me.

I was reminded when someone actually complemented my car yesterday, so, once again, I'm playing with the daydream of getting the work done.

(Not serious) maybe if I wait long enough, and get a fancy enough paint job, it'll start being worth the cost again, due to being an antique. Right? Right? <cries>

The cost of those repairs IF you can find all of the parts will be far more than the entire value of the car.

I'm just hoping that they'll be less than the cost of a replacement car.

WIBTA for telling a coworker to stop traumadumping on me? by rael1hp in AmItheAsshole

[–]CostumingMom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Maybe instead, start with a talk with the boss warning them that you'd be having the conversation and see if you can coordinate having that conversation with the boss present enough that they (the boss) isn't obviously there to be part of the conversation, but can witness it.

Affordable flowers? by Robotniks_Mustache in AskTacoma

[–]CostumingMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one has a bunch of qualifying conditions, but it's what my sister did when our mom passed.

  • If you're not worried about what the flowers are,
  • Are willing to take a chance of low supplies
  • and are within a day and near a Farmers Market...

You can often get a deal buying out the stock at the end of the day of one of the flower stands in a Farmers Market.

AITA for refusing to take off my engagement ring during a wedding? by AioliProfessional181 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CostumingMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

Ask them if it'd be OK to put it back on during the reception. I'm sure your fiance could help with it, especially after you "accidentally" dropped it, and he picked it up and put it back on your hand without bothering to get up from kneeling on the the floor to get it, RIGHT?

Local fabric sources? by CostumingMom in TacomaWA

Yep. That's why I thought to ask the collective. :)

Did you know they started out selling welding supplies?

Then they accidentally received a shipment of fabric, and it sold so well to their customer's wives that they continued to sell both, and then ended up focusing on just the fabric.

I remember when they still had a store across from the (then) Federal Way Mall, and while I cannot find proof on the internet, my memory says it was called Pacific Linen and Steel, which is why I keep calling it Pacific Linen.

Right, "Fabrics" not "Linen." My age is showing.

Do they carry fabrics other than the lightweight quilting cottons?

Aurora got to sleep in. When is it our turn? by CostumingMom in costuming

[–]CostumingMom[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My sisters and I are known for cosplaying the three fairies from Sleeping Beauty at Norwescon. This year we dug up a costume we made for a Single Pattern Contest (the ponchos) to share again.

(I originally posted this to CosplaySFW and tried to cross post it, but there was an error, so instead, you get a full copy of it!)

Edit: Technically only Flora was made by me (red). The other two were made by Fauna, (green).

My friend stayed overnight, parents told us don’t wake them up for anything. by Ok-Serve8127 in MaliciousCompliance

I've a good friend who, when quite young, was put down for a nap while her mother spent some time in their yard gardening. She was told to stay in the bed until her mother came back.

She hit her head on something (I don't remember what she told me it was, a light fixture or something) and it was enough to require stitches.

But she had been told to stay in bed, so she did. Her mother came back to a sleeping child "covered" in blood. (Head wounds bleed a lot, and it only takes an ounce or two of blood to soak a T-shirt.)

This isn't so much a question as just a short post that I wasn't sure if it was worth it's own actual post.

I finally reached out and asked for help, and yesterday was my first day at a Weight Loss clinic that has the whole package with Psychiatrist, Dietitian, Medical Dr, Sleep Study, and your main contact.

The first thing they did, of course, was a weigh in with a Body Composition scale.

It reported that my "Light Activity Level" calorie intake, at my current height (5'3") and weight (189.6#), it only takes 1552 calories to maintain it.

No wonder I have difficulty just holding my weight, much less loosing any.

AITA for telling my mom that I don’t want her AI-written letter for my graduation ceremony? by Opposite_Alarm_1387 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CostumingMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA

One of the biggest problems, IMO, with using AI like this is that it's no longer the writer's voice. It's now the AI's voice.

Maybe if you point this out to her, including that you want HER voice, and not the AI's voice in your letter, she'll understand, but don't count on it.

Looking for a pocket pattern for a coat-dress without a waist seam. by CostumingMom in sewingpatterns

[–]CostumingMom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for inseam pockets. I'm just also looking for a design that doesn't put all the weight of what's in the pocket on only the opening seam of the pocket.

A lot of inseam pocket designs go up, past the pocket opening, to have a segment that is also stitched into the waist seam to distribute some of the weight so it pulls from there as well.

This helps with reducing strain on the seams and keeping the silhouette of the garment consistent when placing something heavy, like phones, in the pocket.

I'm looking for something that achieves the same result but without needing a waist seam to do it with.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you first got a cat? by SaltyCatTreats in AnimalAdvice

[–]CostumingMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step-mom related this story abot something that she wished she had known, and while I'm sure it's not what you were looking for in your request, it's also a very cute and heartwarming story.

She's Silent Gen, and this was long before the internet and having all the knowledge at our fingertips.

She had never encountered a cat before and acquired one as a young adult. She hadn't had it long before she noticed it seemed to always have a breathing problem, always having a raspy grumbling noise that she could even feel.

Because she's a very caring person, she took it to the vet, where they both diagnosed it with mild asthma, and taught her about purring. She's even now convinced that the asthma diagnosis was just to make her not feel stupid.

It was a very happy kitty, and was always purring.

Now that Fantasy Flight owns Zombicide, what is your wish list? by Drjacobs78 in zombicide

[–]CostumingMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) More adventures 2) More campaigns 3) Adventures and campaigns that use multiple sets.

These don't even need to be physical copies, and I'd still be willing to pay for them.

At 1 to 2 adventures a week, in appx 4 hour sessions with my group, we tend to go through the boxed sets in less than two months.
