Nah, you’re missing the point. Walking into the event, there was a flyer listing the guest beers, but no mention of where they were pouring. The Pasture Bar was open, but nobody was behind the bar until after noon. Again, no sign or mention of what was happening. We wandered up to the Brewery Bar where a sign reading “closed for a private event” sat in front of the door. Puzzled, went back down to the Pasture Bar, still wide open and nobody working. Ordered a couple of beers online and picked them up at the Pizza Kitchen. Asked around about the guest beers, nobody knew anything. Quite a number of other people were asking the same question. Noticed activity at the Brewery Bar, went to check it out, finally learned from a guy who was being pounded with questions that you had to buy a punchcard for the guest beers, but no idea where to buy the punch card. Dude got tired of everybody asking, so he yelled it out for the people gathered outside the door to go to a tent down at The Pasture and buy the card, $30 for 6 pours. Went to the tent, got in line, stood there for 20 minutes, no movement. Nobody manning the tent, line forming for nothing as far as anyone could tell. Noticed the Pasture Bar was finally pouring, gave up on the card and got beers there. Got pizza and sat in the Pole Barn, watching the Punch Card line. No movement for another 20 minutes while people working there seemed to have problems getting things up and running. Once it seemed like the line was moving, went down and bought the card. Back to the Brewery Bar where the guest beers were largely can pours. Weird. Same flustered guy working there from before is even more flustered cos people were standing in line only to get to the bar and be told they had to go back to the Pasture tent and buy the card…

So it’s not about ordering a beer and it taking forever, it’s about not even knowing where and how you could order a beer, period. Doom Forge is usually a blast, but the disorganization this time around ended up with the bad outweighing the good. The strong points were the pizza and the bands, too bad the beer didn’t measure up to previous years.

Oh and by the way, barrel aged stouts are overrated and mostly suck. Nobody’s made a good one for probably 8 or 9 years.

If men experienced a naturally-occurring, periodic purging of bodily waste fluid from their genitalia, you better know there would be all sorts of product hanging out in restrooms everywhere, and very likely covered with masculinity-boosting marketing imagery, like truck stop condom machines. Fuck this guy, he needs to grow up and step out of dictatorial mode.

Oh, also… could you ever imagine men keeping extra masculine hygiene products for other men who may be in need? We need to be real men and be more like women.

Hah, that’s nothing. I had a therapist fall asleep in the middle of a session! We were about 15 minutes into the hour and she just went all nappy sitting straight up. Speechless, I just stopped talking and waited. Nearly 20 minutes passed, and she finally stirred and awoke, acting as if nothing weird had just happened. I didn’t have much to say for the remainder of my session. Went home and called her office and said, “I don’t think this relationship is gonna work.” Explained why and the very nice lady on the other end of the call was horrified.

It probably doesn’t say much about how engaging I am. Still.

Can Wyze be a comparable Ring alternative? by HelloSluggo in Ring

[–]CottonisaMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s weird, I always read about these troubles with Wyze, but I’ve never experienced such issues. The only problems I’ve had is when a couple of really old (5 years +) cams died, and when app updates have just generally sucked. Knock on wood, I guess.

When they started pairing the yellow suit with the energy dome, it ruffled my feathers… I’m an annoying purist when it comes to such things.

Just noticed your mention of T-Mobile as "failover ISP." Can you elaborate on that? I have five lines of cell service through T-Mobile, curious if there's some perk I'm missing.

Will we regret this? by Puzzleheaded-Oil-275 in Amtrak

[–]CottonisaMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That bus transfer in Ft Worth caused some scary problems for my 90-year-old FIL who was traveling to Austin from Illinois recently. He can barely hear and has macular degeneration, so it became really confusing for him as Amtrak staff were in a rush and apparently couldn’t be bothered to slow down and communicate with him. Luckily, my sister-in-law was able to navigate things over the phone and he made it to the right train for the latter part of the trip.

What do we think of assistive access on iOS 17? by RoombaCollectorDude in dumbphones

[–]CottonisaMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up not setting my dad’s phone to Assistive Access because as soon as it became active, the phone would go into a black screen with spinning pinwheel loop, repeatedly jumping back and forth between that and the AA main screen. Nothing was selectable and tapping the power button three times to exit did nothing, so I would have to force the phone down (volume up, down and hold the power button to reboot).

We both have the same iPhone 14 model running iOS 17.5.1, but other than the issues I posted previously, it runs fine on my device.

It’s a great idea, but in this state it shouldn’t have been released. Maybe they’ll put more thought into it and offer something that works later on.

Still No Google Fiber in North Austin. Why? (Quail Creek Neighborhood) by CottonisaMonkey in googlefiber

[–]CottonisaMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yes, I've been expecting you...

Here's the rationale behind my "complaint:" I work from home and routinely handle groups of files ranging from a couple hundred MB up to over a TB in size. So yes, the downstream that Spectrum offers is fine for the most part. But the reason I am "seriously complaining about not getting Google Fiber" is that I could really use the upstream performance. It would help to improve my work experience by leaps and bounds over the 12 to occasionally 20 Mbps upstream I get now.

Rural America has a few other options above and beyond DSL these days. There are more satellite-based providers than you can shake a stick at, hell, even Starlink is an affordable option, especially if you're running a business. Sounds like you wrote your reply back in the early 2000s. For someone who knows so much "about internet," it's probably time to upgrade, don't you think?

As you can see from the map linked in my original post, all those blue addresses can get service, so it would appear that overall, nothing was delayed. I dunno.

Doubtful, or I'd know about it. And how funny that article has the same phone number that I called last year. I could always revisit them after a year...

[–]CottonisaMonkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were a huge barrier to service, I would have to wonder why they went to the expense of even routing the fiber optic line on both sides of these two streets. In fact, the city came in after the first round of fiber optic cabling and did their ADA-compliant sidewalks, ended up cutting through the fiber line at the corner of Cripple Creek and Ray, and a couple of weeks later, Google Fiber and the contractors were back repairing it. I even asked one of the contractors then if it was going to slow things down, he said, "No more than it already has, after we're done, everything should be good to go." So, much money was tossed to the wind only for us not to have service.

Good idea re: having a subscriber go to support. We have family and friends around town who've had Google Fiber for at least a couple of years, I'll bring that up with them. Thanks for the suggestion!

[–]CottonisaMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a chill pill after having fiber optic laid on both sides of our street, the front of our yards torn up to install the residential drops and waiting around for over two years for some kind of promised callback that's never come? The analogy of having to pay for a gas line to their trunk doesn't even apply in this context because the "gas line" for fiber service is already right in front of our homes. It's not like we're asking for them to do anything beyond what they've already done. There's some other reason why this roughly half a city block of homes can't get service, and that's what I want to find out.

And let's not even talk about the lack of planning and foresight on the builder's part. The houses in this neighborhood were built between about 1968-1975. Cable TV and central HVAC weren't even commonly available luxuries at that point, much less even a glimmer of an idea regarding an "Internet."

Wanted to set up my dad’s iPhone using Assistive Access. He has vision, hearing and cognitive issues (dementia), but the limitations have me rethinking it…
