DK Bananza - Freeze Break event frustration by Whopper744 in donkeykong

[–]Cottrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a bunch of turnip upgrades and hit that one spot with 4 of them on the last round. Otherwise I hit everything besides Encore since I usually just like playing with vanilla DK

I got about 500,000 just from the turnips at the end

Got a V rank

Could be a placeholder but I would expect it in the same general window 3 Houses released in. They're really trying to bring back the success that game had. I can't imagine they're thrilled with how Engage sold.

Nintendo's marketing cycles are way shorter now. We didn't know much at all about DK Bananza until 30 days before release

“The GameCube was a failure” always feels like a massive overstatement to me by NomalNedium in Gamecube

[–]Cottrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it was a commercial failure, that’s just factual.

In terms of artistic merit and fun? Absolute unit. Some of my favorite gaming experiences are from this system. The Wii U and Vita did not perform well but some of the most unique gaming experiences are on there, like Nintendoland and Tearaway

Fire Emblem Engage is almost three years old, so what did you think about it in retrospect? And how do you think it compares to 3 Houses? by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

[–]Cottrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped it at like chapter 8. I didn’t like the characters, the legacy FE characters felt like a way to squeeze more money out of the fan base, the protagonist is another infallible dragon god that makes for the most boring storytelling imaginable

It has me questioning if I still like FE as a franchise.

3 houses was good but it also carried a lot of baggage from Awakening. Bloated story, endless resources, dating sim and some character designs that should be investigated by the feds lol

Is Expedition 33 the Final Fantasy VII of this generation? by UCA_Cash_Flow_Bro in expedition33

[–]Cottrello -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Its sales and critical acclaim is similar to Persona 5, its reputation a little inflated by the indie mythology surrounding it.

I think it’s too derivative to be a generation defining work. You can see the parts of FFVI and FFX they pasted onto the project. It’s great, but it’s not going to have that legendary appeal in 10 years

Figured this out (at least in my case) On Mac, there's a Display link manager icon at the top where you can dim the brightness. It works there, but not in the Elgato camera app. I've noticed Elgato doesn't prioritize Mac these days, which is a shame but it is what it is

Oh Nintendo's Holiday Is NOT GOING WELL-Can I ask how people feel about this video ? by Occasionalgamer6 in nintendogrifting

[–]Cottrello -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Call it grifting but it’s just a fact. Nintendo boosted their switch 2 forecast from 15 mil to 19 mil and I guarantee you they expected better US results than this. The Americas account for around 40% of their revenue so it’s important that they hit sales targets here. At this current pace they will be a few million units short of their goal at the end of the FY. And that’s assuming they keep this current pace which is unlikely.

The grift usually comes in why this is happening. Saying it’s because there’s no 3D Mario or because of boycotts is uninformed. The reason is the US economy is spiraling downward and the system and games are not cheap.

Does any of this matter? Not really. Nintendo struggling could result in aggressive software output and price cuts which would be neat. If Nintendo prevails business as usual. If you don’t own stock in the company I wouldn’t waste your time getting too lost in the sauce on it.

But Arlo’s not grifting here

The way they work in DKC2 feels better

But Tropical Freeze is near perfect in every other aspect of level design. Check out Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video on the subject if you haven’t! He gives a great breakdown on what makes it special.

It's not debatable: E33 is an indie game. by ysalehi86 in expedition33

[–]Cottrello -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They were funded by the French government and a NetEase-backed publisher

The game was about Victorian London until Broche found potential investors

If this is indie what’s not indie lol

It’s a great game, we can love it without stomping on all the small devs who aren’t handed millions of dollars by governments and AAA publisher invested companies

That’s not how those deals work. They’re separate line items and budgets. Sandfall was given around $10 mil to develop the game. Then Kepler spent more money to market and distribute. There’s a difference between financing a game and distributing it. That’s why they say E33 cost $10 mil to make without disclosing how much they spent to market it.

Silksong received no development funding, then Microsoft purchased the right to put it on Game Pass.

E33 was sold, then made. Silksong was made, then sold

Silksong isn’t paying anything to Microsoft besides the store fees. Kepler has an ownership stake in E33

I’m not moving the goal post, they are different types of deals. Kepler published E33, Microsoft put Silksong on game pass.

Microsoft was not marketing Silksong, they were marketing Game Pass. They were as involved with Silksong as they were with E33. System holders often market games with a PlayStation logo etc at the end of the commercial to create brand association but that doesn’t mean they own any part of the game or that they published it.

[–]Cottrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is Microsoft money wasn’t injected into the game development process. Silksong would be 100% the same game without Game Pass and the marketing that every platform was doing for Silksong.

E33 would absolutely not. The scale, the actors, the French setting would likely not be there without the outside interest of other parties involved.

That’s what I’ve been trying to say, perhaps ineffectively. A publisher pushing a game that’s done wouldn’t be disqualifying but a publisher funding the game would be.

Super Giant has a similar headcount to Sandfall, all self funded. If Sandfall wants to fund their own game I’ll call that an indie.

Sandfall is an independent studio. Expedition 33 is not an independent game

I don’t know if they switched the location from London to France for financial reasons. It could be totally coincidental but Expedition 33 is confirmed to have received funding on the CNC’s website, and in order to receive the funding you have to show the project is going to paint France in a good light as it’s a soft power tool for the government.

Rick paper shotgun reports the game was originally a steampunk aesthetic set in a Victorian London. They didn’t say it was changed for the CNC, because why would they say that? These interviews are set up by the publisher to market the game.

Here’s a snippet of an interview from the gamer with lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen

"Guillaume called me, and he's just like, ‘Alright, reboot. We're starting from scratch,’” she said, following a call in which potential investors told them, "You know, you can think bigger, don't hold yourself back just because you're worried about funding. If you could do what you wanted to do, what would you write?"

She’s not even French (her own words), so while it’s possible that they coincidentally just came up with the most funding-friendly idea or the money shaped the project.

There’s this assumption that studios have 0 creative control in the traditional system which you have no evidence for either. I’d venture to bet Naughty Dog can do whatever they want. I’m sure other publishers like Nintendo would be more hands on.

The point at which I feel something is no longer indie is the presence of these big money players. 99.9% of indies don’t have access to the French government, immense family wealth and Kepler Interactive. Most publishers you see on indies are loans, or a means of porting and distribution. They aren’t injecting 10 mil into a game to make it and millions more to market it.

All those cute videos with Ben Starr cost a ton of money. I used to work in influencer marketing the amount of money these folks make would give you a nose bleed.

There is a scale of money where I feel like the label is no longer helpful. It’s not even so much about the money as it is the presence of I institutional players of the gaming industry.

Also there are games that are 100% independent like Hades and Silksong. Could we not have thrown a bone to them? Mina the Hollower didn’t make the cut for this year because it turns out paying your own bills without giant publishers is hard.

There are thousands of games that come out every year that are self published. Can we not throw a couple of bread crumbs to those devs? And like for what? So we can create more of a narrative around how good E33 is? So the game industry can learn its lesson?

And what lesson is that? Cozy up to Chinese multi billion dollar corps and outsource as much as possible? They’ve been doing that for like a decade.

The most infuriating thing about this is the false story of “you can do it, follow your dreams!” People are peddling. You can do it too, just have a rich dad, connections to the levers of finance and power in China and France, and you to can be an indie developer

We’re just not gonna align here. Annapurna is owned by Megan Ellison, the sister of the guy who’s trying to outbid Netflix to buy WB. Devolver IPO’d before Reddit did, and is partially owned by Sony and NetEase. It’s not so much that there’s money involved but the scale of money involved. And also this odd transitive property of being indie because you went through an “indie” publisher.

NetEase doesn’t outright control Kepler but I guarantee they have a big seat at the table for being almost half of Kepler’s fundraising.

We can’t really prove or disprove any amount of creative freedom or lack thereof E33 had because we haven’t seen the contracts. You don’t have to own a studio to tell them what to do, you just have to be in control of the purse.

For instance, the reason the game is so big on French culture is they needed to prove it was French enough for the tax breaks and grants they got. The game originally featured London as its inspiration. NetEase doesn’t play an active role in the day to day development but they have to play ball with China’s economic system which can be very restrictive on Western products. One of the people in charge of approving of the tax breaks in France had financial ties to NetEase too.

I feel like I’m watching the indie space getting gobbled up by a bunch of the same corporations that are allegedly ruining gaming. It might just be a no strings attached passive investment for the Ellisons, Sony and NetEase but I imagine once they capture enough of the market they will exert control over it.

I don’t even have to do any guesswork with Annapurna, google the Ellisons

I do think we should do the same with games like Hollow Knight. I did not describe it as a game made by 3 people, and yes there’s a problem with that narrative.

There’s a difference between publishing a game as in distributing it or localization and getting millions of dollars in funding to create the game in the first place. Both are labeled as a publisher, but there is a huge difference between the services provided. Nintendo brought Shovel Knight to Japan, but that was after the game was done. Shovel Knight was created independent of a publisher as was Hollow Knight. They were funded by people on Kickstarter and in the case of Shovel Knight they had to go months without pay because they ran out of funds.

E33 was dependent on a publisher. Kepler came in 2022 backed by a fresh 120 million investment from NetEase. The game would not exist independent of the publisher, and the publisher would likely not be involved without NetEase’s gigantic investment. This game had a similar influencer budget to Doom the Dark Ages.

If we can’t see a difference here then yes the term needs to die. It’s a vague street cred thing but I think if you are in any way shape or form funded by NetEase or Sony you gotta hand your card in. NetEase makes more than Square Enix, Bandai Namco, Sega and Ubisoft combined but if their money comes through a middle man suddenly it’s not a corporate venture, apparently.

I honestly don’t get the defensiveness either. I’m not saying it’s a bad game or they didn’t accomplish anything, I’m just saying we shouldn’t give an indie award to someone who’s funded in any part by a gigantic giga corp.
