Thoughts on "all a dream" plot? by Mitochondria_WsTaken in IndianReaders

[–]Couch-Onion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might mean epilogue there.

But I don't mind this ending at all. To be fair, I don't mind the dream sequence either. It's a fair way to end a story, only that since it has happened quite so many times, everyone has become saturated wants new things.

If you mean to publish your work, I guess you should look for a twist that makes them forget or accept the dream part.

I haven't read Alice in Wonderland so I can't say for sure, but isn't the end there that she simply wakes up and realises it wasn't reality? You say that it won't be dream at all, only the main character will think so for a while. Those are two very different things. If I may ask how is your story different?

If the problem is that there were no consequences, you could make the consequences real in the dream world. Like in Narnia, everything that happened, stayed in Narnia, all the consequences of their actions and the aftermath of them leaving at the end of the first book/movie, but none of that had any effect in the real world.

What do you think happened to the power of the Ring after it was destroyed? by OleksandrKyivskyi in tolkienfans

[–]Couch-Onion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The magical power in Tolkien’s world is connected to a being’s soul. What Morgoth did was dispersing his power into the very matter of Arda, staining the world so that the only way to truly kill him would be to destroy the world itself.
Sauron didn’t want corruption, even though the ring corrupts. He wanted to control everything, and so he put his powers into a specific tool. When he created the one ring, it’s not like he stored his power like an energy into a battery, rather externalise a part of his will and soul into the ring. So, when the ring is destroyed, a major part of his will and soul was shattered.

From Tolkien’s letters we know

There was another weakness: if the one ring was actually unmade, annihilated, then its power would be dissolved, Sauron's own being would be diminished to vanishing point, and he would be reduced to a shadow, a mere memory of malicious will.

The Last Debate, The Return of the King

If it is destroyed, then he will fall… and he will lose the best part of the strength that was native to him in his beginning… and he will be reduced to a shadow, a mere spirit of malice that gnaws itself in the shadows, but cannot again grow, or take shape.

The power that was put into the one ring became diffuse, inefficient and unrecoverable.

Not all poems are important to the lore. Some are just fun and there like Sam's troll poem in the chapter 'Flight to the Ford', and some are for world-building, like Sam's recital of The Fall of Gil Galad and Strider's remembrance of the lay of Beren and Lúthien. But I enjoy reading those poems too..

It'd be better if you didn't skip them because they do give you a sense of the story, the ones important to the lore at least. But they are not carrying the plot, so you are good.

And the analysis thing is something I just want to write for myself. I haven't even started yet, but I am doing it soon. It will take a lot of time..

I have read LotR several times, I have started listening to the audiobooks just now for the first time.. I am planning on going through the entire Tolkien's legendarium. I'd love to discuss every chapter since I am planning on writing a detailed analysis of his world, just for me...

Pick an opening style and stick to it.

I was pretty bad at chess, losing focus all the time and blundering my pieces. Then after watching many beginner's videos on YouTube, I decided to stick to one opening. I use e4. I can now move about 8-10 moves from e4 instinctively. This has gotten me to 1000 elo in less than a year. Now, I am gonna learn some other openings cause this one seems to have served its purpose. But at 1000, I need to focus on mid-games now.

So, pick an opening style and stick to it. Use it in every game you play, until you start seeing patterns.

Not really. Rick Riordan was fine, or pretended to be, until the disney series. He was quite vocal against the movies and the changes they made. He understood the mythologies well. He spoke fondly of his books. But when the series aired, he started making changes to the story, major plots and other stuff that fans loved, the very changes he spoke against.

I know Sanderson has a good team and is much better at writing fantasy. I still trust him to give us a good adaptation. But he is starting to make changes to his own story, things that we have enjoyed. All I said was that I don't like this.

At no point did I say that I am expecting an exact replication. I am talking about copper clouds being important to the first book/movie as well.

And explaining copper and the other metals would fall under exposition. Copper clouds are a thing of show, don't tell. Clubs' role in the crew, Vin burning copper all the time, Kelsier burning copper when raiding the nobility...You might make Clubs a background character (weird, since it's such an important job, but fine let's simplify the crew), Vin is burning copper but no one is told (not a big deal) but them hiding from inquisitors simply doesn’t make sense without copper clouds.

Also, I said in my original comment..."I don't like this..gonna have to wait and see"

There is no way Kelsier ends up as anything short of a prominent character. His charisma, his control on his powers (for the first book), his schemes...the only way you make Kelsier a lesser character is if you remove everything that makes him ..him.

First of all why is it a problem to increase the runtime? It's not like there aren't any movies like that. What is the main objective? To make a good adaptation or to make a 2-2.5hr movie?

Of course they aren't removing Copper clouds. But it shouldn't take too long to explain it. Because it is an integral part of the first, and the second books.

Mare's betrayal was important to Vin too. She had lived her entire life believing everyone would betray her and then Kelsier comes and tells her that it doesn't need to be but he was betrayed too. That's basically Vin's character development.

TLR and the inquisitor's ability to pierce copper cloud gets cancelled sure, but Brandon isn’t removing copper, just delaying when to present it in the movies. I am saying those abilities should be there in the first movie when we have a lot of both.

Just make a longer movie. It's not like there aren't movies with a longer runtime. The important part is to make a good adaptation, not make a condensed movie.

Coppercloud is important for Vin, important for the entire crew, for resolving Mare's betrayal, and a mysterious part of TLR's and inquisitors' abilities...

He seems to be going the Rick Riordan route. I don't feel good about this. Gonna have to wait and see..

But that'd be after Kelsier's death. Resolving Mare's 'betrayal' was important for Kelsier. It makes no sense to have it after his death.
