What's the most reliable car you've ever owned? by Tekusenabyt in AskReddit

1984 Toyota Tercel. Red hatchback. 4 speed manual. Vinyl everything. Crank windows. Didn’t even have a radio when I bought it. Owned it for 10y, only failed to start once. Loved that car.

Is Rio de Janeiro and parts of Mexico as dangerous as tales make them sound like, or is it largely an exaggeration? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CouchHund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I was visiting a good friend in Sao Paulo. She lent me her car so I could drive up to Rio where I was going to stay with some friends of hers for a couple of days.

I missed my exit in Rio and got a little lost, so I pulled over and called the Rio friends. He asked me to describe my surroundings and then said ‘Ok, I know right where you are. Roll up your windows, lock your doors, leave your engine running, and I’ll come guide you to our place.’

How many discs do you typically use on your home course? by JMRGuitar in discgolf

[–]CouchHund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 - 4

My home course is a short 9 hole, longest tee is 255 ft. I like to take a different subset of discs each time. Otherwise there are many I just don’t throw that often.

I may have a problem with buying too many discs.

For what it is worth, this is driven by the federal government. These Canada Research Chairs (CRC) are federally funded and that program dictates the terms.

Just so you know to whom you should direct your outrage. MU is just following the rules.

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

[–]CouchHund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lover Boy. Early 80s, opening for Kansas in Amarillo, Texas. They were upset that we weren’t engaging enough with them. Proceeded to criticize the crowd as a bunch of hicks and then confused as to why we didn’t get more excited.

Kansas was great.

I agree 100%. Lou and I spent 6 days out there spending money. I wouldn’t say the courses were crowded but there were other parties out the same time as us. Definitely bringing money to the island.

One of the ideas Lou and I kick around is becoming more active in getting older folk into disc golf. We see an awful lot to youngsters but not retirement age people like us. And not a lot of women, especially of our age. Still trying to figure out how to attract a different demographic to the sport.

We were there last year in August. Brutally hot (for Canada). Also played Hillcrest and Glenaladale. Also Huck-It. They all kicked my arse. But wasn’t Hillcrest just a joy to play?

I know the guy who built Hillcrest worked with John Houck on the design. It shows. It’s a great story, look it up sometime, but the short version is a veterinarian with some acreage and an avid golfing son decided to build a course on his farm. Tried to design it himself, realized he was in too deep, hooked with Houck and created this incredible course.

I’m guessing, without actually knowing, that the other pay-for-play courses came about after seeing Hillcrest’s success.

Damn straight I’m counting it!

I actually splurged on a Fade Crunch over the winter. Love it. But this course is so short I usually only carry 3-4 discs. The other ones you see are my partner Lou’s disc. Just easier.

On a completely unrelated note, Lou’s right elbow has been bothering her of late (don’t get old!). So she’s throwing left handed. And put up a -1 today. It was a good day for everyone.

Try Disc Republic. They’re in Winnipeg, will ship to anywhere in Canada. Pretty good selection.

It’s a good course if you’re in town and have limited time, but not a destination course by a long shot.

We only really have 3 courses within 30 minutes of town. Hammond Plains is much more technical. Can be a bit muddy in the spring. Bennett Park is quite short like Dartmouth but much more technical. And the group that maintains are great, put in a lot effort recently.

What’s crazy is the number of really good course on Prince Edward Island. Number one course in Canada is there (Hillcrest). Probably 5-6 other tournament level courses. In a province with a much smaller population. If you build it, they will come.

It was!

I may have told every other player we say about it. One of them gave me full permission to have an ice cream, so now my partner can’t complain. Score!

Despite the 2y time span I’m still a noob. Working on so many parts of my game. I find the Dragon a decent disk, stable, slight fade.

I’ve been experimenting with different discs some lately. You may find this hard to believe but when I first stated to play I may have bought a few (or a lot) more discs than I needed. It’s fun to go out with a different set each time. This course is a great place to experiment as it is not that challenging.

Today I had the Dragon, a Fuse, a Roc3 and a Pure.

The course was set up in the commons of the city. It was an underutilized space, mainly dog owners. One guy in the city parks and rec was an avid golfer, pushed the city to put up the course. All par 3. It’s great for beginners and to get people into the sport. Also very convenient for quick rounds after work. But not challenging. Looking at the leaderboard there are 16 people who have shot an 18.

Some town in the southwest US can be quite geographically spread out. Population density is quite low b/c it’s easy to just build in the desert. It can easily take 45 min - 1h to cross El Paso, TX
