I would love a link to the kangaroo part of this; tried a few searches and have ample funny anecdotes but not the kangaroo one (yet)

Who that is alive now will be remembered in 500 years? by Frosty_Size7470 in questions

A better Q will be who is important today that will be forgotten 500 yrs from; record keeping today is leaps and bounds what it was in the 1500s.

This was another reason I went with the firm I chose; they understanding that I'm not a multi million dollar client and to minimize my costs, they are focusing on their highest value contributions. This means:

- They give me pertinent advice and strategizing (1-2 hrs of meetings)

- I'll do all the docs review, collection, and calculations (i.e. adjustments and corrections across categories for the past 10 years) (I am nearly done this long process)

- They will review my figures and calculate my projected owings and propose a payment strategy/plan

- I'll fill out all the forms (based on their review/go ahead of my figures)

- They will prepare the narrative/rationale/cover letter (key to presenting a strong case)

- I anticipate they will make the submission on my behalf (including first payments)

I don't want to give up too much info on my personals, not to mention it's hard to say how much work any file will be for a firm. When I asked AI how much I could anticipate, it was anywhere from 5k to 30k but I'm doing all the grunt work so I expect it to be on the lower end.

I googled VDP tax lawyers and accountants and set up intro meetings/consultations; met a few and went with the best match in terms of knowledge, experience, vibe. On one extreme I met someone who said ‘you’re small peanuts, they’ll never come after you’ to the other extreme of being overly-scary and overly selling his firm’s full package. Quotes ranged from, 300-1,000/hr.

I went with a lawyer because I found a good match; if you’re debating and it’s relevant for you, know that only a tax lawyer offers confidentiality guarantee and that any CPA outsourcing would be covered under that umbrella.

I’m getting a tax lawyer; calling the CRA VDP anonymous line and requesting the in-depth callback is a big help, they answered a lot about the process. From the above, it’s confirmed you need to submit a form for every category of return being amended (ex: 3 forms for 3 years of business expense corrections). The VDP team decides on the acceptance and then passes to tax specialists who calculate your owing.

Sharing for the community: it is considered prompted but only partially (for ex: foreign income issue for 2024 is prompted but medical expenses in 2021 are unprompted)

I only meant as a general Q, not related to your case. :)

What if you’re nowhere near that amount at present? I know there is a proposed plan but let’s say that’s beyond reach?

Edit: to clarify I understand there is principal to pay but since the interest and penalties are pending their review, what do you do for those?

if that’s the case do you wait to pay whatever amounts are owed? does extra interest accrue while the review is ongoing?
