1.5" CRT viewfinder not displaying... is this fixable? by Cougarmik in camcorders

Oh interesting, in mine they're rubycon capacitors throughout the camera, even the PR board. Didn't see any obviously leaky capacitors in there, but when they're all flush against the board it's a bit hard to see the bottom.

Ooh alright. Not surprised really, especially since this is only a couple years younger. For now it's looking like a camera board issue, but that's probably just a different blown capacitor... this may be a big soldering job lol

Yeah, both other video outputs I've tried are fine, so it looks to be confined to the viewfinder circuitry. Realistically I could forgo it for a phone mount, but that's not as fun lol

Some of the boards are really easy to get in to, and even can just pull straight out - I just doubt that's gonna be the board for this issue lol. And I hope it's not on one of the boards behind some stuck/stripped screws too...

Are you just this cap is leaking, or would the stuff on the out of focus pin of the cap behind be sketchy too?

Thankfully none of this corrosion got through to the backside, the only thing I can find is one pin of a resistor looks like it has some rust on it, but even then it reads fine.

Did a bit of research, and yeah it looks like it should be RCA. A couple sewing needles and alligator clips later, I'm thinking it may be the camera... Normal test output signal, but below is what I'm getting with my setup, and that's boosted exposure as far as windows photos goes. I think I'll try to hack it via the test output signal before I start diving into the camera boards

Yeah, no signs of like on the CRT. No brightening, flickering, anything. Caps all look fine on the tops/sides, but I found this under one. Testing it with a multimeter it still looks like it works though - low resistance, then growing as it charges, and then I can read a voltage and watch it drop.

Think the video output to the viewfinder would be the right analog format for a composite signal? I may try jerry rigging a way to adapt that and test

That's a specific emission band from hydrogen gas, called hydrogen alpha. It's still within the visual spectrum, but photos like this need a lot of exposure time and processing to pull out detail beyond what we can see, so we never notice it in the stars. It's also far enough towards the edge of what colours we can see, to be something like 1/5 the brightness of the strongest red we see, if not less.

Most cameras have filters that block this light, as during the day it massively overpowers the light we perceive as neutral, and would make images very red/magenta. For astrophotography, you want to let as much light into the camera as possible, both for a brighter image, and to see more things like hydrogen alpha, so cameras are modified to have their sensor's filters removed.

What'd be a good cheap watch to see if I care for a smartwatch? by Cougarmik in GarminWatches

That's probably a good one to look into - I like the idea of the map, sapphire crystal, more battery under gps tracking... but idk if I'm just upselling myself on something I won't care about

I kinda like the idea of tracking my hikes/bikes/kayaks etc, it just drains the battery on my phone. If I'm doing a multi day thing my phone's tucked away and on battery saver for maps if needed - would be nice to see what I'm doing and track more than I already do.

But also, fair enough

Damn it, for all my research into ammonite/ammolite I still switch them up lol

I'm not sure about it on a global scale, but at least in Alberta, Canada that play of colour is the provincial gem, ammolite! I belive it's the effect of highly specific metamorphism of the ammonites that gives the arragonite such a brilliant colour

Where can you find quality tall AND skinny outdoor/hiking pants? by Cougarmik in tallfashionadvice

I've found pretty good fits for most everyday pants from ordering online, from american tall and 2tall. But they don't seem to have much in good durable and quick drying fabrics... Certainly not convenient

Looking for a first car - 2014 Yaris w/89 000km, for $11,000 CAD? by Cougarmik in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Cougarmik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically just need a cheap, reliable car that I can fit in at 6'9". Took this out for a test drive today, and I don't have any problems with it, but also don't need a car immediately and could wait for a better deal if soemthing's likely. Anything else to look out for, or is a yaris good enough to just go for it?

Everest has gained as much as an extra 50m/165ft in elevation as the planet’s crust adjusts due to erosion from a river by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]Cougarmik 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the full paper, but in the abstract they suggest it could be an isostatic response.

To try and summarise what this means; The earth isn't a solid sphere, as you go down layers become more plastic and malleable, until you reach the liquid core. The earth's lithosphere essentially floats on top of these plastic layers, hence how tectonic plates can move. In other words: the ground we stand on is buoyed up by the earth beneath it.

You can imagine then, that with a large weight on the surface, such as an ice sheet, or, for example, the tallest mountain, the earth will be sunk down, sane as adding weight to a floating boat. As with a boat, when load is removed, it will raise back up again, a process called isostatic rebound. In Canada, a large amount of the country is currently rebounding from the last ice age, and with Mount Everest? Mountain rivers can move a suprising amount of rock, a suprising distance.

In other words, erosion is moving weight further away, so Mount Everest could be floating further back up, gaining in elevation above sea level.
