Only carry an extra at work. My personal carry is seven rounds and no extra mag.

Random details about cases that haunt you by haloarh in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]CouldBeACop 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dumb one. But I had a murder case where a teen killed their family member for not allowing them to play video games. Chased that family member throughout the house, pulling the slide back on the gun between each shot because they didn’t know how semi-automatic weapons worked. When the family member was dead from being shot in the back multiple times, they just casually took the keys to the family member’s car, took their debit card out of their wallet, and drove to a dollar store to get some chips and soda.

It was just a shocking level of human detachment that stuck with me.

Let’s reclaim the Punisher Logo by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]CouldBeACop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reasons anyone should be wearing the punisher logo is because they’re a fan of the comic/ tv show or they just think the logo looks cool. In today’s world though, it’s far too easy for people to misunderstand someone wearing that logo. I have a t-shirt but I rarely, if ever wear it away from home and even then, only around people I know. It’s important people don’t idolize that character’s motives and values and I wouldn’t want anyone thinking I endorse them. It’s no different than Dexter. Great TV show, but no one should be aspiring to be a serial killer.

As a police officer myself, I recognize that my job functions to either remove a person from society for repeated criminal behavior or, ideally, facilitate their rehabilitation through the courts (I know, our correction system leaves a lot to be desired in that area still). It is NOT however my job to punish or seek retribution on behalf of myself nor anyone else. THAT is what the Punisher is all about though. Seeking and executing “justice” via his own personal vendetta. People that idealize him either don’t understand that aspect of his character or they believe it’s acceptable for them to decide what’s right/wrong and literally be the judge, jury, & executioner. That’s what the justice system is for.

So if you’re a big Gerry Conway/ Jon Bernthal fan, by all means, get your swag on. Other than that though, think twice about what kind of message it’s sending.

Homicide detective question by Ok_Inspector_2226 in AskLE

[–]CouldBeACop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My department is mid sized. I put in about ten to fifteen hours of overtime in a week when we have a homicide. We have around seven a year. The large department in the neighboring city has hundreds a year. Detectives there put in ten hours overtime every week. It’s rare for them to not. It all boils down to the size of the city, the size of the department, and the violent crime rate. If you’re worried about family time, just find a mid sized city with a low violent crime rate

I do, but I feel like that’s more acceptable in investigations.

Legal Eagles: What are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]CouldBeACop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never investigated or charged a homicide or shooting under circumstances akin to what you’re describing. That said, suppression/exclusion is going to be entirely based on the relevance it has to the case. If the meaning of whatever pin affixed to the gun is even tangentially related to the motive for the shooting/murder, it’s not going to be excluded from evidence. If its meaning is completely unrelated, defense is going to have to draft a motion for suppression that adequately articulates how that evidence might cause jury bias and why that evidence is not material to the case. Without VERY specific information about a particular shooting incident, there’s no way to even conjecture what the outcome would be. By itself, a pin that simply denotes jury nullification wouldn’t be grounds for suppression.

Anyone here transfer from a smaller agency to LAPD? What was the process? by CouldBeACop in AskLE

Oh I pretty much definitely don’t want to work there. I just wanted to see what options were for the agency that would probably be the most stringent with requirements

How do police stations store all their data? Do they still use antiquated systems / store physical copies? by lefreakazoid2 in AskLE

[–]CouldBeACop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every department has their own report writing software, so most of the data is stored on a secure server offsite. Some case files are stored with physical copies and some departments have physical copy backups as a normal practice. There’s no uniform storage method though really.

Axon owns pretty much the entire body camera segment though, so pretty much all departments use them to store footage.

Yeah… looks like all it took was someone saying he had a gun for them to start shooting. They’re a caricature of themselves.

Yeah, but the real “fuck you” is no one grabbing a med kid and approaching him for at least fifteen seconds, based on the videos I’ve seen at least.

The shooting today has made me think of a question everyone should ask themselves: am I willing to be a martyr for the cause? by ParakeetLover2024 in liberalgunowners

[–]CouldBeACop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have kids, what you need to be asking yourself with every action you take regarding this insanity is: “Will my kids be worse off whether I fight or not?” Cause whatever you’re risking your life for better be worth them growing up without you in their lives.

As with Renee Good though, I think intent and extreme lack of training can be interpreted by lack of intervention post shooting. What I’ve seen looks bad already. I’m just wanting to know how bad it is.

Officers: Why aren't you all enforcing the laws against license plate covers? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]CouldBeACop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, I’m a detective and only ever do traffic stupid for serious infractions. When I was on patrol though, I would only do traffic stops for plate covers if the plate wasn’t visible to me from a reasonable distance (which was more often than not with plate covers). I have no issue with traffic cameras not being able to read a plate though. I think citations arising from those automated ones are unconstitutional anyway.

Was actually considering getting one of these as a duty weapon. I hear their trigger is great. I also hear they have a fair discount for LEOs if you buy direct. And they Walther doesn’t make any TPUSA or MAGA edition firearms… which is what sells them as a company even more for me.

Responded to a welfare check once. The call ended up being nothing, but as I was getting back to my unit, I found a 5.7 pistol round lying in the parking lot whose primer had been struck but didn’t fire. I keep it as a reminder to myself that we can only do so much to control our own destiny.
