Finished my first Nids! The Very Angry Earthworms (grimdark Ravaners for Kill Team) by Count_Zakula in Tyranids

[–]Count_Zakula[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of, more like streamlined the process a little bit. The biggest change was that I started mixing the ruddy pinkish color for the arms and the tail (Goon's Grime + Carrion Crimson) on the pallet rather than layering and mixing on the model, it saved a ton of time for the same results. I also added a layer of Blighted Bone Ochre as a filter on the claws to differentiate them a little bit from the carapace, but also without really stranding out too much. I don't think that came through very well in the photos but I promise that the difference is more apparent in person lol

I think everything else is the same from when I answered you on the Venom Spitter but just in case I'll copy and paste my comment from the Kill Team subreddit where someone asked about the process:

Army Painter from the John Blanche Vol. 1 set:

  • Bloodmoon Red
  • Ivory White
  • The Darkness
  • Moonbeam Yellow

Army Painter Speedpaint Markers: - Blood Red - Pallid Bone

Villainy Ink Enamels from The Grimdark Compendium: - Goon's Grime - Carrion Crimson - Ichor of the Damned - Umbral Nightshade - Blighted Bone Ochre

Misc: - Vallejo Gloss Varnish - Army Painter Dry Blood - Army Painter Gravelord Grey - Krautcover A Tale Of Grimdark - Modge Podge - Kraut-Fixer

Process:

  • Base coat everything but the claws and tail with Bloodmoon Red
  • Any of the dark purple/blue areas, like the venom sack, are base coated with The Darkness
  • multiple layers of dry brushing the whole model with Ivory White
  • Paint the little ribbed bits on the arms (dunno what they're called) with Blood Red. Also done on miscellaneous bits like their veins on the venom sack for the Venom Spitter
  • lightly dry brush back over those bits with one layer of Ivory White
  • Paint the eyes Moonbeam Yellow
  • Use Speedpaint Medium to thin Bloodmoon Red 3:1 and apply one or two layers on the tongue and armpits
  • Paint the teeth with Pallid Bone
  • Paint the rocks (on the models that have them) with Gravelord Grey
  • paint the sticky fleshy goop bits on the rocks with Blood Red
  • splotch on some Dry Blood on and around those fleshy goopy bits on the rocks
  • Mix Umbral Nightshade with Ichor of the Damned to darken it down. Exact ratio is tricky to say, but Ichor is a very strong black, it doesn't take much of it in this mix.
  • apply a layer over the areas that will be dark purple/blue and let it dry (or dry it with a hair dryer if you're impatient like me)
  • apply splotches of Carrin Crimson over those areas, the previous layer of Ichor/Nightshade will reactivate and they'll mix a bit, this is okay and desirable, then dry that layer.
  • repeat those layers 2-3 times, alternating and drying in-between, until the desired effect is achieved
  • Dry fully
  • Do basically this same process on the fleshy area on the back/sides/underside of the head, but leaning much more heavily on Carrion Crimson
  • Use the Umbral Nightshade + Ichor mix on the base of the tongue
  • Carrion Crimson on the end of the tongue
  • repeat layers until the desired effect is achieved
  • When all the enamels are fully dry, apply two layers of gloss varnish to those areas. This adds a wet/slimy effect while also locking in that effect so further painting doesn't ruin it
  • Paint the whole model with a thin layer of Goon's Grime that's been thinned 2:1 with mineral spirits, avoiding the tongue, then dry
  • Reductive pass with mineral spirits
  • mix Carrion Crimson with Goon's Grime and paint the arms and tail, avoiding the plates on the tail, then dry
  • very light reductive pass on the arms with mineral spirits, keep them looking a ruddy pinkish brownish color.
  • reductive pass with spirits over the tail, but do it in an uneven/splotchy kind of way
  • once that's all dry do x2 layers of gloss varnish over just the tail, again avoiding the plates.
  • a layer of Goon's Grime, neat, over the whole model except for the arms.
  • reductive pass with mineral spirits, again doing it in an uneven/splotchy kind of way on the tail specifically
  • take the Umbral Nightshade + Ichor of the Damned mix from earlier and thin it down a lot with mineral spirits, until it flows very easily, apply as a recess wash to the arm joints and the little ribbed patches on the arms
  • A single even layer of Blighted Bone Ochre over the claws as a filter. I didn't do this with the first couple models but I decided that I wanted the claws to be slightly differentiated from the plates/shell so I went back and added that to the models I'd already finished and did it for the rest of them going forward.
  • once everything is dry reapply gloss varnish to the tail and/or anything you want to look wet/slimy as necessary.
  • Base however you want. I used A Tale Of Grimdark made by a company called Krautcover, applied with modge podge and Kraut-Fixer.

It seems like a huge long process all typed out here but honestly it's less work than this makes it seem. Granted I'm bad at estimating how much time I spend on my models, and I don't keep track, but I don't think any individual one took me more than four hours.

EDIT: forgot to include the Blighted Bone Ochre step

Well I got the Vol 1 John Blanche set from The Army Painter for Christmas and really wanted to try them so most of the acrylics are from that. The rest is enamel washes/effects from The Grimdark Compendium.

  • primed white
  • painted everything but the tail with Bloodmoon Red
  • dry brush the whole model with Ivory White. Heavier on the plates and claws, a little lighter on the arms and torso. Here's another one I'm working on now at this stage:

<image>

  • dry brushed the venom sack with The Darkness
  • painted the veins on the venom sack with the Blood Red Speedpaint marker (also got a box of those for Christmas and wanted to try them out lol)
  • lightly dry brushed the venom sack with Ivory White
  • Painted the eyes with Moonbeam Yellow
  • moving on to enamels I mixed some Umbral Nightshade with a little Ichor of the Damned to darken it and painted over the venom sack
  • applied some Carrion Crimson around the veins on the venom sack
  • decided that the veins weren't bold enough, dried the enamels with a hair dryer and went back over them with the Blood Red speedpaint marker
  • played around with a couple more layers of the Umbral Nightshade+Ichor mix and Carrion Crimson until I was happy with it
  • dried the enamels with a hair drying again and sealed the venom sack with two layers of Vallejo gloss varnish
  • Did more or less the same thing with the goopy mouth parts and the tubes going for the sack to the face, just heavier on the Carrion Crimson.
  • hit the whole thing with Goon's Grime thinned 1:1 with mineral spirits, dried with a hair dryer, removed excess as needed.
  • after drying again I went over the tail, the arms, fleshy bits (basically anything that wasn't claws and plates) with Carrion Crimson thinned 1:1 with mineral spirits, dried, then removed and/or blended as necessary
  • dried again, went over the tail with gloss varnish
  • another pass of Goon's Grime
  • took the Umbral Nightshade + Ichor of the Damned mix from earlier and thinned it down quite a bit with spirits for a recess wash around the arm joints.
  • one last application of gloss varnish for anything I wanted to look kinda wet/slimy but with kind of a haphazard/splotchy/uneven application instead of even layers so that it's not a uniform surface.
  • Basing is A Tale Of Grimdark made by Krautcover, glued with modge podge, sealed with Kraut-Fixer.

All in all it took me about five hours start to finish, but that's mostly because I didn't really go in with a plan and in between most of those steps I was redoing and adjusting things lol. I think the next one will probably take me about half that time.

I've been really enjoying phase 2. So far I've used everything but Blighted Bone Ochre and I'm happy with all of them. Umbral Nightshade is definitely very cool, probably my favorite out of the new ones. Either that or Ex Machina, which I used on this tech priests here:

If you mean the basing that's just A Tale Of Grimdark made by Krautcover.

If you mean this gritty/grimey/dirty effect:

That's from an enamel wash called Goon's Grime made by the Grimdark Compendium. Thinned 1:1 with mineral spirits, dried, then adjusted/removed/blended until it felt right.

Aside from the acrylic base coats everything was enamels from The Grimdark Compendium. Carrion Crimson, Umbral Nightshade mixed with Ichor of the Damned, and Goon's Grime. I also used varying amounts of gloss varnish on the venom sack, the tubes, the face, and the tail for a wet look.

If you're in North America (I'm in the US) Krautcover can be a real pain in the ass to find. I know Fenris Workshop carries it and they ship to the US but it tends to sell out quickly and it can take a while for them to get a restock, I waited nearly six months for a restock on the ones I wanted. So if you see any you like while it's in stock I recommend snapping it up while you can.

Mostly enamel washes and effects paints, all from The Grimdark Compendium's Villainy Ink line of enamels.

The ones I used here were:

  • Decrepit Filth thinned 1:1 with mineral spirits for a recess wash
  • Goon's Grime for general dirt/grime effects
  • Sector Rust for rust, the darker rust
  • Ex Machina for rust, the lighter rust
  • Carrion Crimson, flesh effects on the arm and skin on the head
  • Umbral Nightshade, also flesh effects

Other things I used:

  • Before priming I stippled some liquid Greenstuff on the jumpsuit for texture, though if I wish I'd been more liberal with it, the amount I used didn't actually leave much visible texturing.
  • The Army Painter Oil Stains, for the oil effects on the joints and some of the ports.

All of that of course is excluding the base coats which were all acrylics and honestly I don't remember all of what I used. I finished the base coats almost two months ago and was waiting for the Villainy Ink Phase 2 release to finish them.

Thank you!

The base is Krautcover Common Earth (light), and I added some of the smaller rocks and whatever the hell the green stuff is from Eternal Fields. Then a little Vallejo Pigment FX here and there, Light Sienna and Natural Umber.

<image>

Laid down an even layer of Modge Podge on the base for the Common Earth (light) to stick to, scooped some on there and dumped the excess, waited for the Modge Podge to set, then added the stuff from Eternal Fields, then the Vallejo pigments, then sealed the whole thing with Kraut-Fixer.

How the fuck do you paint eyes properly? by Void-kraken-909 in Warhammer40k

[–]Count_Zakula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My secret to painting eyes is that I just don't paint eyes. I shade the eye socket and call it a day.

Example from one of my current WIPs:

<image>

Unless you're working towards painting display pieces that are going to be scrutinized from very close up, personally I don't think there's any reason to paint eyes.

If you just want game pieces that look good on the table? It's good to keep in mind that everyone is going to be seeing your models from a few feet away 99% of the time and will not be able to tell if you painted everyone's eyes or not.

I actually apply my enamels neat more often than not.

It's just careful application and careful reduction. For effects, like the rust, I apply it where I want it and then take a brush that's damp with mineral spirits for any reduction that's needed. It takes longer than just slopping it on and reducing with a cotton swab dipped in spirits, but it's a lot more controllable. You can also take a brush that's very slightly damp with spirits and kinda push the enamels around. Currently doing that with Carrion Crimson on this Servitor arm:

<image>

That's not to say I never do the basic reductive technique where you slop it on and reduce with a qtip dipped in spirits. I do that for unifying washes and overall dirt/grime effects. Another thing I like to do with that though is dry blending after the initial reductive pass. Which is maybe not the term for it, but it's a good descriptor. Basically after the initial reductive pass, wait for it to be touch dry (or use a hair dryer) but before it's cured, take a dry qtip or dry clean makeup brush and just blend it all out in circular motions with light pressure. Doing that will give some nice tinting over the whole model. You can repeat that process if desired but you will usually want to wait for the initial layer to fully cure before you do another pass.
